The MAME version is superior of course but its damn nice to have the hard-copy in your sweaty, shaking hand.. The Saturn is an awesome machine, criminally overlooked. I love buying Japanese imports for it (when I have any dough!) - the CD cases and artwork are so superior to the big clunky cardboard boxes we had in Europe - also, the games were all poo over here, whoever the hell decided on what NOT to bring over (basically everything) should have been jailed - no wonder Saturn flopped :(

I love these shooters & have this for my JAP PS2 But please someone explain to me the purpose/differenace between the blue & pink bullets? there just so many on screen I dont know whats going on! Im sure I am missing something ? as I just dont see how its possible to win (the way im playing anyhow!) without infinate continues & that seems pointless..

@paulspydar No difference at all in most games but in SOME titles you may have a weapon that can shoot certain colour bullets, things like that - in these earlier games it is just an aesthetic thing - having all bullets the same colour can get a bit boring to look at (some modern Doujin games do use this though).

@andy7666 maybe its another shooter then? cos I heard somewhere that you can reverse the enemys bullets of a certain colour and make them return and shoot at the enemys that fired them at you, (does that make sense? I`m not sure I explained that too well!)

you should review the lastest released games of the Cave company for the Xbox 360, like Mushihimesama Futari and Espgaluda 2 Black label which are region-free for USA and PAL consoles, there is also the incoming Deathsmiles published by Aksys

and Donpachi is out now on the japanese playstation network, Cave is really the best shmup company in these years

I agree with you: you need to review more bullet hells/arcade style shooters! On June 29th, Deathsmiles will be released for the 360. It's another bullet hell, although it's horizontal like R-Type rather than vertical. Still, it's made by the same company as DonPachi. If you can, review it when it comes out! That would really make my day!

The Dreamcast is home to quite a few Danmaku [Bullet Hell] games. If you import, there is Chaos Field, a boss rush game that has an everchanging difficulty setting [you can make the game harder, but you get more points and do more damage], Ikaruga got a Japanese release, Psyvariar 2: The Will to Fabricate, Karous [Crows], Radiriji [Radio Allergy], 2 other Milestone shooters, Border Down that has a fantastic cost/reward system, Under Defeat, and Zero Gunner 2. Not bad for one system, huh?

Okay you guys possibly will flame me but every DP game after DDP is just overdone and just flat out sucks (and I have played lots of bullet hell shmups, don't believe me? Check my youtube channel including battle bakraid superplay). I love Donpachi and Dodonpachi but DOJ and Daifukkatsu can go to hell. Every Cave Game after Guwange is just overdone and pushes many casuals off. Cave are just showing off how much bullets you can put in without creativity. DOJ is definitely for masochists.

Touhou is a 2d Doujin game, its basically a shooter, except its with "maids" instead of planes. they spawned a fighting game i believe. but as a shooter its bullets EVERYWHERE On the screen.

Man, I have NO idea how to play this genre. What do you focus on, enemy bullets or enemies themselves? I find that when I'm dodging bullets, I'm shooting aimlessly into the air, and when I'm shooting enemies, I frequently get shot myself.
