I believe it's so that he doesn't dig his fingers too deeply into the string. He plays very lightly but uses strong volume from the amp to compensate for the light touch. He finds that the over-all tone of the sound wave is more uniform that way without the sharp decay in sound that comes after giving a string a good twack. Also, because plucks lightly he suffers far less fatigue in his fingers and hand. i think that's how he explained it in another video seen elsewhere.
