  • A PC exclusive Unreal Engine 3 where they could unleash and show off what the engine is capable of would be very intresting.

  • Still awesome for todays graphics!

  • wow 2004, i thought it was finished in 2005, til.

  • does the copyright say 2001?

  • @ave383 2004, not 2001

  • It is overhyped. It is not WYSIWYG!!!! It looks very impressive but this demo from 2004 still has better quality graphics than BulletStorm or GoW. Shaders (and shadows and ligting effects) in UE3 games are not so soft and smoothed out. My point is you will not see such quality graphics in real UE 3 games. UE 3 games in practice have worse looks than tech demos.

  • @SOKOLEK uh perhaps you should try a recent release of UDK if you think that.

  • @VoxHouseStudio U know what I think about your idea? I think that your idea is just excellent!!! I will do it, and I hope you prove me wrong. I really want to be wrong!!!

  • All these assets are from Gears of War, aren't they?

  • @iLikeTheUDK They probably planned ahead - this demo was made 2 years before Gears 1 was released on Xbox (and 3 years before PC release of Gears 1)

  • I wonder what Unreal Engine 4 will look like.

  • And a Brumak

  • 4:40 LOCUST!!! Hahaha

  • @BugzzLightyear You say no because you clearly have no idea about game development or game engines AT ALL! Tech 5 is alot better than the unreal engine. Faster, easier to use and looks alot better.

  • @oBLACKIECHANoo And where have you used iD Tech 5? Because your testimonial on ease-of-use differs from Carmack's... and he made it.

  • @phopojijo Well then, he can't use it too much. Because I have used it a little and I have used all the previous engines they have made. So I find it pretty easy to use.

  • @oBLACKIECHANoo

easier to use? When the fuck did you get your hands on it?

  • my favorite engine

  • @UltimateBadass007 Yeah, it looks great but it was not optomized and so I am sure Epic could do something like that if they wanted, but as even the beginning of this video shows, they develop the engine so games can look good and run fast. If Cry Engine 2 was that good, they would not have dropped it when making Crysis 2. They went back to DX9 even just because they realized that as good as they made their game look, no one could play it.

  • tech5 > unreal engine....

  • @UltimateBadass007 it's not as fast...

  • Best UE3 video, with a excellent mystic music and nice environment !

Anyone now what is the music at the beginning ?

  • I remember seeing this SO long ago, I thought it was mind blowing at the time. Which I guess it was.

  • I remember when I first saw this back in 2005(?) and I was just totally impressed with this. I thought that graphics could not get better. To add to that, I was a total graphics whore.

    Now, present-day 2011, well... There's better-looking engines. Also, I'm not a graphics whore anymore.

Oh, how the times have changed..

  • I remember how impressed I was by this back in 2004. Six years in, not a single UE3 game actually uses any of this. Damn you, Xbox 360.

  • Can i ask how you implant a Rag doll effect on a static mesh?

  • What is the music at the beginning please ?

  • They shown in 2004 graphics that are available only in 2007, why can't they do the same thing now? SHOW ME 2013 GRAPHICS!!!

  • RAGDOLL is a disgusting thing

  • Where I can find this tech demonstration in high quality ??

I working on a map to simulate this presentation. :P

  • alguien kiere pene

  • the environments on the first part of the demo is actually from gears of war but they have the different color scheme

those wretches and brumak have already existed since this demo

its like the viewers at this time are already seeing the upcoming game which would still be released in 2006

this demo is actually a preview of gears of war way back in 2004

  • At the moment Im creating a "Re-Make" of a older game that was created on the Unreal 1 (Unreal Tournament 99) I think, anyway its coming along nicely...

Im taking ALL the maps and creating ONE HUGE one... SO you can enjoy the entire game map as one whole, totally AWESOME... :)..

Serious Engine has the most easiest and advanced way of creating Geometry in any game... This is the largest plus over any other engine... PLUS if you change a Model its updated in the map directly or the other way to..

  • SOURCE ENGINE FTW WTG! (its old but i love)

    or the one by ID

  • I like Serious Engine a little better...

Its easier to build awesome Geometry with, for me that is... :)...

Also, it "mirrors" all Meshes/Models ingame so you dont take up any memory...

Tried this Map Editor before its to much shitty things to do just to get something working...

Great for Epic but not for me...

  • Which version of Serious Engine do you use? Made anything good?

Is it just me, or is this video a lie. I done remember seeing any physics that good in any UT3 engine games. And have found no way to play with them in the editor. If that was the case, a garrys mod type program for UT3 would be AMAZING. I havent seen anything that good....

  • that looks realy nice but Cryengine is way better

  • because its used on console who knows what unreal engine could do if it were used to its full potential on a pc. And unreal engine 4 is coming out for the next gen of consoles god knows what that will be able to do

  • @ViolentBiscuits

while that's true on many engines, unreal engine 3 is actually not hampered by consoles at all. Unlike other engines, it's incredibly easy to run, and so, the consoles run it at the fullest settings. (without AA of course). If you made it have so many high polygon assets or failed to optimize the engine to the point that it must be dumbed down for a console means that most people won't be able to even play it well anyway. On other engines I would agree though.

  • its true idk why you got a disagree

  • Normal Mapping is soooo cool.

  • Um....what is that supposed to mean. "All unreal editor 3 engine look similar." What do you mean? Are you saying that all games (Bioshock, Gears of war 2, mirrors edge, section 8, rainbow 6 vegas) all look the same? Tell me what engine is impressive?

  • i see another person who really see differences in max possibility of engine and how its presented in the games, they've simply dosent look the same, maybe Gow.. but bioshock... nope. u know dynamic shadows didint look like in this video so u somehow right.i have same feeling.

  • @3iHard

No. This full potential thing doesn't even make sense. You see, it isn't about the settings or whatever, particles and shaders aren't exactly hard to implement. You're missing the point. It's usually the developers who must implement the engine WELL. Also, the shadows do kinda do that. But the vid just presented shadows in a way that looks impressive. Also, just wanting to put this out there, bioshock uses Unreal Engine 2.5, not 3. It's just very well modified.

  • @rolln2013

    bioshock2 uses unreal engine3

  • @Capeau

no it doesnt. it has some unreal engine 3 code in it, but it's mostly unreal engine 2.5. look it up.

  • @rolln2013

thats the most ridiculous thing i've ever read..

it uses some ue3 code but is mostly ue 2.5?! loll

  • @Capeau

    games (dot) vainsoftgames(dot)com/?gameID=15

check this article at the "game engine" section. you honestly don't know what you're talking about. that happens all the time.

did you know, for example, the goldsrc engine used the modified quake 1 engine with partial id tech 2 integration? look that up too dumbass.

  • @rolln2013

i know what im talking about as i worked for different game developers and with many game engines, but thanks for the compliment kid.

  • @Capeau

Ok. My bad, king of game engines. Let your humble domain reach far and wide.

  • @rolln2013

ok, you may go now. ^^

  • Even today, Unreal Engine 3 is amazing. I think a lot should use this engine and pimp it out beyond the max! It's still good to use

  • what game will take this engine?

  • Many games use the Unreal 3 Engine. Hardly any games use it to its potential.

  • @Digitalstorm007 Mostly because crappy consoles limit the game graphics to their crappy video cards :(

  • where can you get this?

  • 1 word: DAAAAAAMN!

  • I just cant belive they showed us all those cool shadow effects but still NO game i repeat NO game have them to this day.

  • true... and If you have Unreal Tournament 3 game look to acid on deck or on any armor- on all speculars you can see antalus map from UT2k3:p

  • i remember sawing this in 2004... I was stunned

  • wow they had the locust desgin in 2004 wow

  • Gears of War was being planned since 2004, so it does make sense that they already had the locust design done already.

  • Amazing. I love the physics in UE3.

  • unreal engine FTW!!! :D

  • Alot of this tech is about 5 years old and first used in the source engine

  • oh yeah true that

  • Yea they could probably make this twice as realistic now

  • So they did this demo back in 2004... so in 2009 they can probably make a demo like this for the unreal engine 4 :D PLEAASE i'm so curious!

  • Lol appears like that dragon was originally intended to be in gears of war

  • Yeah :)

I wouldn't be surprised if it was a scrapped design for Skorge's mount or something like that.

  • the engine supports all these effects just not used by the mappers yet.

  • *drools** omg!!!

  • Comment removed

  • God dammit I wish I had their SDK.

  • can any one beleive that this was made in late 2004

this is an amazing graphics difference between this tech demo and ut2004

they were made in the same year

i wish they used this for ut2004

  • develeping an engine takes years!

Tim Sweeney (technical director of epic) is working with few engeeners on unreal engine 4 since 2008, and it should be ready between 2012 and 2018.

so when UT2004 was released (UEngine 2.5 fyi), UEngine 3 was already in progress.

  • I agree. I wish they would release this tech demo, it looked amazing back in '04, and still does today.

I especially like the lantern part of the video, (Where it's in the fridge room).

  • it's been a long time!

  • 4:13 a geras of war drone

  • the dragon at 4:49, is it the monster cliff b was talking about that made the brumak look like a panda bear? please respond

  • hellgate london should use unreal engine 3 :P

  • I hope Cod6 uses this.

  • Modern console is simply cannot handle graphics like that

Unless someone takes this engine and develop a PC exclusive game, like Crysis, we will never see the true power of Unreal Engine 3 in our PC being rendered real time.

  • Play gears of war 2 on the xbox 360, and you'll eat those words.

  • U do realize that consoles are limited in terms of processing power, right. I've seen that game. nothing special that we've never seen in PC exclusive engine.

You can will processing power out of nothing. x360 is a PowerPC CPU with 48 unified shader architecture for its GPU. Modern graphic card have hundreds of parallel shaders

Gamespot has some graphic comparison, if you like to see some proof. But if you know the hardware spec of the x360, it pretty much speaks for itself

  • I have a 600$ custom gaming computer than can run crysis on high (albeit not *very high), and I also have a 360. The only thing you need to do is wait and save up money between buying one and the other.

Why do you think that nobody is patient or has any money.

  • Just so you know, the 48 unified shaders are vector shaders, not scalar shaders. The Xenon GPU is basically an X1800 or whatever, just that the pipelines dedicated.

Otherwise, wow, Xenon can produce pretty damn good results for something as powerful as a low-end GPU.

  • doesnt look half as good for real, geez

  • Wath is the first music please ?

  • and they should have kept these characters and the gun there using to move things around

  • tell me was this before ut2004 or after because the graphics are quite amazing for 2004

  • UT2004 used Unreal Engine 2.5 i think. Another good engine is Source. For 2004, Source is the best Engine ever created, because it's the first to have HDR, and high quality texures. They scan people and they put theyre pictures on the model. Quite ingenious.

  • I think you mean Unreal Championship 2.

  • ut is engine 2.0.......... the only game i know that use 2.5 is red orchestra

  • is the "tearing of the screen" part of the engine or is it there becuase of the movie quality?

  • Yeah man, it's one of the "effects" of the engine. "UE3 can even simulate screen tearing for that 'we cram more frames than your system can handle onto the screen' look."

  • Haha, I remember that vid. dates back from 2004, but I'm still waiting to see half of those effects in UT3 or other games (like Displacement Mapping and Cast shadows/lightning)

  • it took my wahile to realize that after watching this, Gears and UT3 are running the engine at lower quality, which really sux. I think epic was using quad core pcs for this demo, i hope that the next gen consoles won't be running in these grahpics, i'm hoping better

  • It's not that they're using uber PC's. The demo was running on a 6800 (which really sucks now-days) and that the only thing powering it. The reason they were able to soop up the graphics so much was because of the scene complexity. Notice they're running these in very small simple rooms (mostly) with very few different materials. In GoW power had to be split up among everything (there's about 20 things the GPU does besides graphics) and here they could focus all the power on the visuals.

  • those r GOW character.. That a giant freak cannon creature.. Gears Of War use this character.. Or is that character belong to UT game??

  • FRAUD! XD

  • It would be a bitch trying to run game with unreal engine on my computer.. :o

    That's why i prefer X360.

  • cod 4 didn't use unreal engine it used the Proprietary engine, bioshock uses unreal engine 3, crysis uses cry engine 2. :P

  • haloelite is right. Seeing posts like these really make me question peoples intelligence and the amount of research they do before they decide to talk crap about other games. At least get your facts right if your going to bash games.

  • i think he was talking about bioshock, which did use unreal engine 3, not all the games listed and it was pretty easy to figure out that he was only talking out bioshock, so i question your intelligence

  • Why does he say "Unreal Engines" then? Plus he listed the games instead of saying Crysis and CoD4 and mentioning Bioshock in another sentence. Either way it is not my faultI don't understand because the comment was poorly written.

  • @haloelite11215 Call of duty 4 use the ID tech 4 ( Doom 3 , quake wars , wolfenstein etc... )

  • @Jigsaw5999999999 call of duty runs on the IW engine which is a proprietary engine. :P

  • @haloelite11215 in the credits its "ID software technology" is not id tech 4 ? but another graphics engine bilb by id software for call of duty 4 ?

  • @Jigsaw5999999999 ooh i guess i've misread alot of stuff lol all of infinity ward's call of duty games uses the ID tech 3 engine. i guess call of duty 4 uses a more updated and edited version of the engine.

  • @haloelite11215 noooo the quake 3 engine ?

  • @Jigsaw5999999999 Quake 3 used Unreal Engine 1, amirite?

  • @Zestava no quake 3 its the ID tech 3

  • @haloelite11215 Wrong. They use a heavily modified version of ID Tech 3. They used the original for Call of Duty 1, an upgraded version for CoD 2, then another for 4, etc.

  • @haloelite11215 Bioshock uses Unreal Engine 2.5, not 3.

  • @duckotaco ugh this is so confusing lol

  • @duckotaco No, I'm pretty sure it uses unreal engine 3. Unreal Tournament 2004 used UE 2.5

  • @caferoflz wrong, search "bioshock unreal engine 2.5" on google

  • @caferoflz but apparently wikipedia says Unreal Engine 3.0! So somebody is wrong here. I believe Wikipedia is. Many sources say 2.5 and to me it looks like 2.5. Unreal 3 has completely differently lighting to begin with. I go for 2.5 for Bioshock.

  • @caferoflz the official UnrealEngine site confirms once and for all that Bioshock 2 used the 2.5 engine and not 3. Sorry! =)

  • @duckotaco Ah, well I guess I'm wrong then. I guess it makes sense that it would be UE 2.5, just based on the time frame it was released; however, it does seem heavily modified compared to the other games that used it.

  • @duckotaco This is taken from that same page: “Today, our version of Unreal Engine is its own animal… it’s branched out into a lot of different, very custom things that our teams have layered on top of that base.”

So yeah, not sure why we both put effort into figuring that out... but it turns out that it is a heavily customized version UE 2.5

  • @caferoflz Becuse we want to know

  • lol man i remember watching this in freshman year and thinking that this is the best that graphics will ever get. then came crysis.

  • those r resistance 2 creatures sicccccckkkkkk

i saw them on the resistance screens

  • Dude-gears of war

  • I Wish Those Sewer monsters would be in Gears of War!

  • no those sewer monsters were re created to be the wretches in gears, notice the similar characteristics of looks, structure, and movement of the sewer characters.

  • yes, but I mean these sewer monster look (to my opinion) much more scary.

  • man,i wish i knew more about these engines and stuff, btw, kewl stuff on the vid :P

  • wow, that big red thing looks like a glowing dildo

  • Lol wtf man

  • damn i wish unreal engine was a game lol

  • games are made with that -_-

  • i no im not a n00b like u. >=D

  • Me too.

  • Me too.

  • Well it will sooner or later

not like that but you know, it will be used by a game ;)

  • locust dragon?

  • I've seen this video tons of times, yet I am utterly amazed at it everytime. This engine owns all other commercial engines.

  • so freaking awesome they're using this for MK8

  • you no garrys mod? they should make an unreal version of thet. that would be so much better.

  • simply awesome how far the progression of game technology has gotten

  • Why cant graphics be made with a bending surface, like f(x,y) = Cos^2(x) - Sin^2(y)

    and requite polygons? Anyone know?

  • what do you mean exactly?

  • Like making a perfect sphere and putting a texture on it without making the sphere out of polys.

  • just add a sphere object in a 3D programm like blender. no need to build it up out of polys

  • Because it won't be possibble to make it in 3D ,there are Nurbs and Sub-Divisions but they are only a mathematical way to make polygons !

  • i think the geometry of plane polygons is the easiest to compute but a 3D plot would require much more power let alone the rendering.

  • omg! people will be crazy with this level of realistic thing...

  • Wii can actually run this engine. Along with Havok.

  • Keep dreaming

  • I'm not kidding you, the guys at Epic Games have said so themselves. Actually, they said it was a 3rd party that made that possible. Havok has been used on the Wii too.

  • Cry Engine 2 looks better

  • nope

  • cry ia good for first person shoter but overall unreal

  • Own it??

Hell no it will deliver it on silver platter, than gawk at the awful goo and then poke and laugh at that shit!!

  • Yes it does, stop shitting in your pants it comes out next week. By the way this is a tech demo of unreal engine 3, not Unreal 3 dumbass.

  • cant wait till unreal tournament 2007 comes out

  • lol ur a drug head

  • Total bullsh*t marketing hype. UT3 looks nothing like this.

  • Locust in the disco!

  • americas army 3.0 gonna be made on ue3 aswell. hooah!

  • yep. can't wait. except that aa3 is gonna restart our honor... :(

wtf? everything is made from a high res and low res version and then they are shoved together.

  • OWED by CRYENGINE 2.....

  • Both engines are supreme, yes, but they're both failures next to some other engines that could have been great but nobody did much with them.

  • thats because you don't have an HDTV, on the 720p it looks even better. and how you can compare youtube crappy flash video quality with real hd image ????

  • This engine will be used on a lot of games

  • its so obvious that dragon thing is gonna be in gow 2

  • Well i don't agree with that assumption considering this was an early tech demo of the unreal 3 engine and not part of the game. Even if all this actualy was part of the game(which I doubt), I'd bet not everything in this demo is relevant to the gears of war series as of now.
