I've got a 1st gen as well. Currently restoring it. I wish I could have video'd everything I've done. 1st gen is the best, strongest, and most real diesel pick up ever made. on stock pistons crank and block this engine is capable of well over 1000 hp. parts are hard to find through dodge. try your local cummins dealer. this engine is found in heavy equip as well. it's a 6BT model.
-12 is not really that great ... wait until at least -30 then it will be worth watching ... cause where i am cars have no prob startin at that temp and if they do theres something wrong with it ... and we never plug in our vehicles unless it gets low as -20 at least
Do you have dual batteries or just a single? My brother's '92 cranks easily all the time with single battery, but the '94 that I have worked on does not crank worth a poo without dual batteries.... it can be 60F and the 94 complains without two fully-charged batteries..
One large single battery. We were thinking of going dual, which could be beneficial. On a really cold day with the grid heaters cycling, it puts a huge load on the single battery, enough to dim the headlights down and slow the wipers to half speed.
whats with the music??

-12 is about as cold as it gets in Vancouver, BC. The Cummins will probably live to see the next ice age.

@hacker01000101 You must live really far north because I'm in Northern Saskatchewan and plenty of people plug in before it hits -20.

How, I'm in Maine, did you add a battery? What are you using for oil?
NewMexicanBob 3 years ago
Only have one battery in there. Oil is Mohawk 15w-40 from a refinery that I work at.

haha i like your truck also. when you say "unplugged overnight", do you mean that there were no block heaters etc?
robicool 3 years ago
Thanks. Yes, that is correct, no block heater. The extension cord was too short for where I had to park that night.
