Lynn Dickey had a lazer arm and was a great quarterback but unfortunately, he was about as mobile as piece of stone. Toward the end of his career, his knees were so shot that anytime a huge defensive lineman broke thru the line and was charging at him, he'd just go to the ground.
The frustrating thing about Lynn Dickey was his lack mobility. He was an easy sack if the pocket broke down. Other than that and a tossing a few too many picks, I thought he was great. I was upset when they cut him to "get rid of the 8-8 mentality" of the early 80's. I believe they went 4-12 that year.
@XXXFirebird76XXX That was part of it, but the other part is the thugs that Gregg brought in too. I can take my team being bad, but when you slam the opposing QB to the ground and put him out for several games that's not the type of team I want to root for. Hard hitting and aggressive is one thing, dirty is another. The Packers under Gregg just got dirty.
Lynn Dickey was often injured during his NFL career,he played for the Houston Oilers from 1971-75,he was traded to Green Bay in 1976 and did'nt become their starting Quarterback until 1980,David Whitehurst was the starter prior to Dickey taking over!!
@WCD73 Dickey was the starter and broke his leg and Whitehurst played the 1978 season as the starter and Dickey came back, and then he got hurt again in 1979 and Whitehurst filled in again. I remember in 1978 everyone got on board the Whitehurst train and we thought the bad days were over after a 6-1 start. Then the Packer swoon kicked in and they finished 8-7-1, tying the Vikings. If the Pack had simply gotten into field goal position in that tie they would have gone to the playoffs that year.
could not scamble, could not run, but no one is better on the long ball. he could throw!!

Lynn Dickey's comments on Brett Favre were right on the money.

I liked Lynn Dickey a lot in High school, but he was no Favre, Favre plays injured, just doesn't talk about and piss and moan....
