This is going to be the biggest mistake of Le's life, the " fall " of his career going into the tank with other sharks. The only guy I see fit to make it is Mark Munoz, a filipino fighter with vicious bombs and top notch wrestler.
I look forward to seeing him in the UFC. I just wish this would have happened 10-12 years ago, Cung is getting older. I think he will find things much harder in the UFC but hopfully he will do well. People underestimate Cung Le and overestimate the level of striking in MMA. Belfort has more MMA experience, but Cung has far more experience in a higher level of stand-up competition.
Im a Cung Le fan and also from San Jose but im still scratching my head how the hell he can ask to fight in the ufc and get a main event spot. i think there should've been more reason than simply being from San Jose. Im not trying to be disrespectful to Cung but its just my opinion.

@plimbuff GSP is a great grappler but middleweight also has some very strong wrestlers as well: Sonnen; Okami; Munoz; Weidman; Akiyama... these are some of the grapplers he would have to beat just to reach Anderson. Even Jake Shields who beat Dan Henderson at middleweight went down to welter because he didn't want any part of Anderson. Akiyama should also be at welterweight IMO. Cung has good wrestling skills too but I think he could go further at welterweight.
@plimbuff If you want to make money in combative sports you drop as much weight as you can manage. He beat Hendo who had noticeable back injuries & problems making weight when they fought. He requested middleweight until he found out he would have to beat several middleweights to get a shot at Anderson as would Cung Le. I was wrong it he did want Anderson, however he didn't want to risk potentially losing one of many fights just for a chance to maybe fight him. Le's best chance at a belt is GSP.
@plimbuff Your point: GSP is better on the ground than Anderson... His wrestling is better his jujitsu is not. There are better & bigger grapplers in the middleweight division for your 2nd point that would most likely out grapple GSP. ALL Cung's KO's were against very low ranked fighters. Lee will never hang with the top competition, especially at 39.

That would be an interesting fight. They have trained together at American Kickboxing Academy. I would like to see Cung Le fight Wanderlei Silva. That is a challenging opponent and would be an exciting fight.

@MrMatt5252 All of Cung Le's fights so far have been in Strikeforce. He only has 8 fights in MMA. He fought progressively better competition including some UFC veterans and a legendary UFC champion. It's noteworthy that he dominated and stopped every opponent he beat and was even winning in the only fight he lost until he gassed and got caught (fight occurred after a long layoff). If Cung loses in the UFC it will likely be due to age and rust. Certainly not a lack of skill as you imply.

He fought better strikers in San Shou than Anderson Silva fought in Muay Thai and some of the bouts were in K-1. His MMA record was not a joke. He had a chance to be D1 but went to college close to home.

Bruce Lee studied a variety of Martial Arts including grappling and trained as well as instructed some of the best Martial Artists in the world during his time. He was a high level Martial Artist and founder of his own Martial Art whose philosophy on Martial Arts was inspired by real life street fights with other Martial Artists like Wong Jack Man before he became a major actor.

@MrMatt5252 You're an MMA fan and you've never heard of Jeet Kune Do? Bruce Lee's Martial Art was a complete fighting system based on the philosophy that Martial Arts should not be limited to styles. Use what works and strip away the inessentials. He designed it after an NHB challenge match with a Kung Fu master in which he realized there were alot of holes in Wing Chun. He familiarized himself with nearly every well-known combat discipline and trained with world champion fighters.

Aside from the loss to Smith he has dominated every opponent he has fought in his professional career. He has undeniable skills. His age, rust and dedication are things that could hamper his potential success in the UFC but I believe he has the ability to be a success if he commits himself. For Cung to be successful in the UFC, he would have to be really good on the ground. Shamrock was not old they are the same age and have been competing in combat sports for almost the same length of time. He lost to Smith after coming off a layoff. He destroyed Smith in the rematch. Cung is not one dimensional he is a dynamic elite level striker with great wrestling and improving BJJ. If he stays focused for his UFC fights I believe he can dominate.

My statement was that he is superior to brawlers and that only great strikers like Anderson Silva are likely to beat him at his strength. Even at 39 a focused Cung Le is a tough opponent. He has great striking and great wrestling credentials. It's perfectly plausible that he could beat some top contenders in the UFC. Nothing you've said challenges that.

People underestimate Cung Le and overestimate the level of striking in MMA. Belfort has more MMA experience, but Cung has far more experience in a higher level of stand-up competition.

@plimbuff GSP is a great grappler but middleweight also has some very strong wrestlers as well: Sonnen; Okami; Munoz; Weidman; Akiyama... these are some of the grapplers he would have to beat just to reach Anderson. Even Jake Shields who beat Dan Henderson at middleweight went down to welter because he didn't want any part of Anderson. Akiyama should also be at welterweight IMO. Cung has good wrestling skills too but I think he could go further at welterweight.

@plimbuff If you want to make money in combative sports you drop as much weight as you can manage. He beat Hendo who had noticeable back injuries & problems making weight when they fought. He requested middleweight until he found out he would have to beat several middleweights to get a shot at Anderson as would Cung Le. I was wrong it he did want Anderson, however he didn't want to risk potentially losing one of many fights just for a chance to maybe fight him. Le's best chance at a belt is GSP.

There are better & bigger grapplers in the middleweight division for your 2nd point that would most likely out grapple GSP. I think GSP's Jujitsu is equal, if not better than Anderson's , plus GSP has WAY WAY better Wrestling. That gives GSP a huge advantage on the ground overall.

ALL Cung's KO's were against very low ranked fighters. Lee will never hang with the top competition, especially at 39.

I understand Cung's KO's where over weaker opponents but GSP isn't exactly a KO machine either & cung does have decent defensive wrestling. I just don't see Cung even getting a title shot in UFC at middleweight where at welter I think he could at least get a title shot. Just my opinion. I don't think Cung could beat either GSP or Silva, he should stick to making movies.

@Conceptskatemedia I agree he is a great fighter, his almost perfect record in sanda, kickboxing, k1 and MMA justififies that but i think he is to old to achieve anything in the UFC. And no matter how good he is his style being an aggressive striker but also most importanly a counter striker since the most significant blows he connects with are counters, requires that he remains active. He rarely fights and that inactivity will throw off his timing, and timing for his style is everything!

Anyway, I could talk about this all day but there's alot of people who have done way more than Cung has in MMA, and against better competition, that people thought would give Silva a tough fight and that wasn't the case so it's safe to assume that Cung wouldn't either.
On the other hand, Leben will never be a title contender especially with Silva there so Leben vs Cung would be a fun and close fight. Not pointless like Diego fighting Cung which is really pulling a name out of a hat there. lol

@MrMatt5252 All of Cung Le's fights so far have been in Strikeforce. He only has 8 fights in MMA. He fought progressively better competition including some UFC veterans and a legendary UFC champion. It's noteworthy that he dominated and stopped every opponent he beat and was even winning in the only fight he lost until he gassed and got caught (fight occurred after a long layoff). If Cung loses in the UFC it will likely be due to age and rust. Certainly not a lack of skill as you imply.

He fought better strikers in San Shou than Anderson Silva fought in Muay Thai and some of the bouts were in K-1. His MMA record was not a joke. He had a chance to be D1 but went to college close to home.

Bruce Lee studied a variety of Martial Arts including grappling and trained as well as instructed some of the best Martial Artists in the world during his time. He was a high level Martial Artist and founder of his own Martial Art whose philosophy on Martial Arts was inspired by real life street fights with other Martial Artists like Wong Jack Man before he became a major actor.

@MrMatt5252 You're an MMA fan and you've never heard of Jeet Kune Do? Bruce Lee's Martial Art was a complete fighting system based on the philosophy that Martial Arts should not be limited to styles. Use what works and strip away the inessentials. He designed it after an NHB challenge match with a Kung Fu master in which he realized there were alot of holes in Wing Chun. He familiarized himself with nearly every well-known combat discipline and trained with world champion fighters.

Shamrock was not old they are the same age and have been competing in combat sports for almost the same length of time. He lost to Smith after coming off a layoff. He destroyed Smith in the rematch. Cung is not one dimensional he is a dynamic elite level striker with great wrestling and improving BJJ. If he stays focused for his UFC fights I believe he can dominate.

My statement was that he is superior to brawlers and that only great strikers like Anderson Silva are likely to beat him at his strength. Even at 39 a focused Cung Le is a tough opponent. He has great striking and great wrestling credentials. It's perfectly plausible that he could beat some top contenders in the UFC. Nothing you've said challenges that.
