I have the utmost respect for Donald Quarrie; he was, in my view, nearly as great a sprinter as Valeriy Borzov. What is more, he - like Borzov - excelled at both sprint distances (100 and 200 metres.)
That said, I have to say that Quarrie was somewhat fortunate to win the Olympic title in a time of 20.23 seconds. Four years earlier, in 1972, that time would only have been sufficient to win the bronze meal in the same event.
@flaxonx3 Yes, you are right on both counts (though to be fair to, I think, Coleman, the commentator, at his best he was untouchable. He had an amazing knowledge for all sports, not least athletics.
Why does the WR show as 19.78 in the graphic? The WR then would've been Smith's 19.83. Just a TV error, or was there a 'to be ratified' time pending that was never ratified?
@Pihasanddunes1 Well spotted, sir. The world record for the men's 200 metres was indeed 19.83 seconds at the time - 1976. To the best of my knowledge, no one got anywhere near to breaking that record (which was held by Mr Tommie Smith) in 1975 or '76. (That said, Mr Quarrie was credited with a hand-timed 19.8 secs in the summer of '75. That didn't count, though; hand-timing was - and is - notoriously unreliable, as we all know.)
Quarries's win in 1976 Olympics at 200m was Jamaica's first Olympic gold medal after independence in 1962. A true jamaican pioneer and future standard bearer in which all Jamaican sprinters would be judged from.
what do yo mean when you say he shud have run it like Quarrie? Quarrie faded in the last 50, in stark comparison to Bolt, plus Bolts got better top speed.

Hasely Crawford pulled up with a hamstring here if my memory serves me right but this dopey commentator wasn't professional enough to confirm it.

@flaxonx3 and poor Hasely pulled up in the 1972 100m final with the same problem. Luckily for him - in between he won the 1976 100 m
