The Whelen sirens were replaced becuase the technology was not in congruence with Homeland Securitys new regulations. HS can actually take modular control of all the FS 2001s if need be. Its a part of a nationwide warning system, tho I think Federal has a kickback im sure. Whelen got the raw deal on this one.
This siren was distinct, very loud, and you always could hear it and knew what it meant. The new ones they have now are hard to hear and sound like Dearborn's EMS vehicles half the time, so I don't react hardly the same.
2001s are better than whelens because FS made the thunderbolt and now they are making the 2001-130 so do not F*** the 2001-130. Thank you for reading this and do not cuss at me because I am only 10 years old and this is my dads account. -_-
@parrthd1 Just cause Federal made the Thunderbolt does not make the 2001 good. The 2001 is very high pitched which means that the sound it produces has poor structure penetration and does not carry as far as the lower pitched Whelens or ASC T-128 sirens. Not to mention that Whelen has more signals which means that firecalls or different emergencies could be easily differentiated. Airhorn is popular for firecalls while hi-lo is popular for nuclear emergencies. In short, 2001s suck.
@88mroux Yes they are. Your hearing 23 other Whelen omnidirectional sirens winding down at the end in the background. I live there. Dearborn had the best system until Federal Signal came in with thier fire-truck sounding 2001s.
@crabsnpubes What about the sirens winding up closer to the end of this video? Are they Whelen Sirens in another town or city having their turn for a test? Or are they the ones you were just talking about?
@88mroux Those were Whelens too but I think those were coming from Inkster cause they have 4 Whelen 2800 Series and its the closest city to this location that would have 2800 Series.
@88mroux Inkster should still have their 2800s but I haven't checked to see if West Shore Service ether replaced their controllers or didn't even touched their Whelens.
@t3subde Actually, quite the contrary. Dearborns old whelen sirens like this one in the video, are amazing sirens compared to the replacement ones they have now. I live in dearborn.
There's still a Whelen omni next to the Henry Ford Museum parking lot (As of two weeks ago, anyway). I neglected to pay attention to whether it was a 2700 or newer though.
I'm confused. This is definitely the sound the Federal Signal Siratone 612 made in the infamous, long-lost "whoop" video; not the sound that a Whelen usually makes, especially in "whoop" mode - that can be heard in video # IkrcIlb0czs
So... is this edited, or does this siren actually make the sound from another brand of siren? o_O
Its got to do with the Sound Cards in the motherboard. These older Whelens had these common tones which is the factory setting. In the early 1990s, Whelen upgrated their sirens and lower the Hz level to 460 which carries the sound further. If you take a look at the video response, you can see that my Whelen 3016 does exactly the same thing cause this siren and my 3016 were both made by Whelen the same year.
Sorry, it's been a LONG time since I heard the EOWS version, like a year or more. Someone finally posted it and I now see I was way off, lol: Pu7sWCXGlvg
Well everyone was used to hearing the Whelen, when i moved from a town that had Dual tone siren to a single tone siren I had a tough time adjusting to the sound & the signal format. it takes time
I live in dearborn. and yea unfortuantly the whelens were taken over by the 2001s. I miss them. They created such an eerie tone when tey were all activating. Especially for a snow emergency. All doing hi-lo together. But not all the whelens were replaced. none of them sound ne ore but about half of the 24 sirens are still up. I was told it was because the 2001s are soo much louder than the whelens that it was unecessary to replace all of them with 2001s. So they just made a new coverage plan.
I was told by the EMA director of Dearborn that the all Whelens are decommissioned. He also told me that he has been getting complaint calls from Dearborn residents saying that the new 2001s are not loud enough. Are you able to hear 2001s from your house?

@parrthd1 Yes but the whelen got more signals than the 2001-103 and they need less maintenance because they got no rotator. but rotators are cool...
