This is traditional folk music to people saying he stold this from a british folk song Appalachian people came mostly from england ireland and later poland so yea we got some of your folk music here with some tweaks to it
I lost my heritage when my mom died young, I lost touch with my family from the Chattanooga area and I listen to this music when I get drunk and wistfully remember
I have this on a 78....so this is the first time I've heard it without the crackle of playing in on my grandfather's Victrola....as a musician, I appreciate hearing this version, but sentimentally, I miss the crackle :)
@ipalindromei I didn't say this song was a hymn! I said some people may know this song from church as a song someone has singed. Maybe a folkgroup like The Carters performed this inside church without organ or piano, just their instruments :-)
@ThornyRoseV Kinda messed up to call them hypocrites(though I know there are some there) Its just as bad them calling everyone who does not go to church something derogatory.
AP Carter did pretty much what Cecil Sharp did a decade or so before -- traveled around the rural country side and recorded old British folk songs sung by rural Americans to see how much they'd changed over time. But Carter took it one step further by copyrighting the songs and recording them with The Carter Family. He just never got around to copyrighting "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" and "Happy Birthday."
@Acexwanderer There were lots of different versions of this song by different groups, especially during the 50's folk revival. Other versions are hard to find, but were done by Irene and Ellen Kossoy, the Philo Glee & Mandolin Society, and the Brothers Four did a dressed-up version called “Damsel’s Lament.” You could call it a traditional folk song and be fine with it.
purest music there is, period.

Is this a traditional folk song?
Acexwanderer 1 year ago
@Acexwanderer For some it is. But maybe not for anybody. Most people know this song from the time they were kids, or perhaps from church.

@baasting . I really doubt those hypocrits in the church would sing there about suicide which is suppose to be a sin..
