The group was not without it's flaws. But the racial tension, and the violence of the 60's and 70's caused many people to be reactionaries. In a time when African Americans were being shot to death by police officers with evidence planted, or the courts letting people off from murdering, and all the other numerous evil deeds of the government in those days, did you expect them to sit and watch and do nothing?

But they weren't racist, well, maybe in the beginning, they eventually changed though. If they were racist, I'd say that you're right. From what I know though, the Panthers were mainly for the uplifting of the downtrodden. They had plenty of social programs set up for that cause. There was even a White Panther Party, with members such as the MC5.

The Panthers were NOTHING like the KKK. They were about "equality" and "unity", read the speeches they gave, or books about them. They were about breaking down the racist power structure in America, which was oppressing African Americans. Maybe if you can show me where any of their members claimed that blacks were better than whites, I'd believe you. Them being racist was just an FBI propaganda tool, so they could destroy them.

The kkk did not pledge violence but they did violence in public sight and the local police and the fbi did nothing about it, but they made sure to spy on the panters and take time to set them up.
