@dpk209210 and @TheFloppyChicken '96 A Night in London is the most soulful version of this song and 1 of the 2 greatest live versions, the other one is Alchemy Live in '83 at Hammersmith Odeon! He was 34 in '83 and 47 at A Night in London....almost no difference in speed and far more soul!!! Drums not as good as the Extraterrestrial Terry Williams in Alchemy '83, but good! He plays Pensa MK I in '96 instead of the Red Strat in Alchemy '83. More nrg '83, far more soul in '96 (& I think better!)
I think some people dont like it because its too different from the original. Fans listen out for the exact notes, and little fiddly bits. Genesis fans expect that all the time, so you never see Tony Banks improvising. Hed be booed off stage!
How different to all the other versions - different mood and never heard riffs from him - he always invents new and it is strictly awesome. His vocals support this special relaxed feeling. A true genius
KN1lch... They always do that live... they sing a bit later and other tones, he's not off. Prolly to show he's really singing live and not playbacking orsomething.
This is the track 5 from the Mark Knopfler At The Royal Albert Hall (1996) :
"comes from the official album "Sultans of Swing: The Very Best of DS", but it's only the bonus CD - not available in many countries, cover says "This recording was made for a live US radio broadcast by Album Network at the Royal Albert Hall, London on 23rd May 1996. Tracks have not been remixed, overdubbed or altered in any way".

I was interested to read comments about the "best guitarists". You have to be very careful here as you have to take each style on its' own. Paco Pena is probably the greatest in Flamenco; Yngwe Marmsteen for shredding and heavy metal; John Williams for classical and for "popular" there are thousands but, technically speaking, there are but a few - in Britain we have Hank Marvin, Brian May and David Gilmour, all the rest in are league 2 and I include Mark Knopfler in that. Cue for outrage!!!!
don't forget the great blues guitarist from the 60s and 70s like Page, Clapton, and Hendrix i would even argue Knopfler although most of his best stuff was in the 80s. many that don't play guitar people fail to realize that playing rock is playing an evolved, often dumbed down, version of the blues. so thank BB King the next time you rock a solo on your axe.... lol
This is so true, this is by far the best Sultans of Swing made, and probably the greatest performance of MK ever. Beats the Alchemy version by a mile.
This limited bonus disc (where this song is on) is in FLAC on usenet now, so search it and go get it!
You're not comparing apples with apples. They had different influences hence different styles. MK is more country (JJ Cale) and JP is more pure Rock N Roll. Page was crap live IMHO and his recordings were just endless over-dubs. Great producer though.
1. HENDRIX 2. MARK KNOPFLER 3. ERIC CLAPTON 4. SANTANA 5. STEVE VAY 6. ANGUS YOUNG 7. JIMMY PAGE 8. VAN HALEN 9. JOE SATRIANI 10.GLENN FREY It's my personal list ;)
You get a shiver in the dark, it's raining in the park. Check out Guitar George, knows all them fancy chords. And Harry doesn't mind if he doesn't make the scene. And an old guitar is all he can afford. He's got a daytime job, he's doin' alright. And a crowd of young boys they're fooling around in the corner. They don't give a damn about any trumpet playing band. It ain't what they call rock and roll.
And then the man he steps right up to the microphone. Goodnight, now it's time to go home.

good that guys like phil lynott sing like a rocker!
would suck hard if they'd miss the rythm.

or if you listen to jimmy's life performances, he doesnt even play the song like he did in the studio, but his vocals fit the sound...
