Okay I'm a believer! Going to turn my ABB, WSP, Mofro, Dead friends onto the amazing jams of Phish. Has Trey and Derek Trucks ever jamed? Different styles but if they could get it together it would be the BOMB. Thanks
OMG - Next video speaks of a reunion - did they break up before I get to experience them????
@layladuane This is exceptional, but if you are looking for more go to Silverchair's page, Mkdevo has TONS of 2011 Phish shows. I recommend the Mansfield, MA shows on MKDevo's page....the sound is excellent and will give you an idea of your standard "good" show these days. Unfortunately, this time period is not going to be replicated. It's comparable to the Dead in '77 if you know what I mean.
@layladuane Nope they got back together in '09 after about a five year break and right now they are kicking ass... Super Ball 9 was awesome. You still gave a chance to see them this summer if you hustle.
@layladuane Yes, Derek Trucks has played with Trey a few times. He sat in with Phish for 'Possum' and 'Funky Bitch' on 7/7/1999. Then he played with the Trey Anastasio Band a few years later too.
Okay I'm a believer! Going to turn my ABB, WSP, Mofro, Dead friends onto the amazing jams of Phish. Has Trey and Derek Trucks ever jamed? Different styles but if they could get it together it would be the BOMB. Thanks
This shit is off the chain, y'all! Around 5:30 begins the Trey Maniachal Head Bob and by 6:00, omg. Someone mop me up off the floor cause I just melted. Trey+Languedoc=auditory ecstasy.
(2 of 2) So now I'm going back and listening everything thru 1998 & I'm starting to think '98 may well be Phish's best year. At this point they'd integrated most of the Ghost album and I feel like this is their nexus between talent, youth and creative drug use.Check out vids of 98, Trey's definitely on something in a lot of them. Personally i think it's ecstasy, but there are different theories on that.Anyway, drug use has diminishing returns when it comes to creativity and 99 on shows that imo
I took about a 10 year haitus from phish because after 98 they played a lot of shitty, uneven shows and after one brutally shitty show in 2000 I was done and didn't think about phish for a decade. But after catching the 2010 new years run shows, I must say I think they're that they're back BIGTIME. Yes, Trey's lost a step, no denying that, but the band as a whole sounds fucking phenomenal and I feel like trey's working his way back. (1 of 2)
This is a video of a man possessed by the power of rock! You can see it, it always starts with a little head bob, and next thing you know you're jumping around like a damn animal. It's the best drug known to man, the music takes over your whole body.
@rulosa01 please remember that Phish is not a cult. they are a band. "thumbs down" means that someone legitimately has a dissenting opinion. stop making Phish into 1984. who cares if people thumbs down? Phish isn't for everyone. "tool" haha, shiny example of intelligent language. see you at SuperBall! peace
@jfox7733 What I meant by "You are a tool" is that you spend your saturday night trolling phish videos on youtube. What I meant by my original comment "how the fuck did 12 people dislike this? Thats like saying you dislike sex" was "In my opinion this is so good, I just can't understand how anybody else could not like it" Hyperbole - an extravagant statement or figure of speech not intended to be taken literally, as “to wait an eternity.” Get a life dude, try and get out of the house more
Phish is better than the Grateful Dead... Sorry to dissapoint people if they disagree... Phish is just unlike anybody else, they have all the right pieces.
Kerry kings good but hes kind of overdistorted and crappy sounding like the rest of slayer. I mean the drummer is fast but thats about it. he can hold a candle to trey but unfortunatly its like holding a candle to the sun
shit this isnt all about trey jamming(to the original poster)...the whole band is tearing it up. mike dropping SICK bombs, fishsman is a precise ticking time clock as usual and page well...you tell me? i will say trey is def the highlight Best ghost by far
@goldenchopsticks I think it's actually the Digitech Whammy set to octave mode. You can hear him sweep up into the octave with the pedal at one point then back down a little later. Used this technique much in the 90's.
This is my favorite performance by phish of all time. even though trey took the whole jam over i usually like when they all take over at certain points.
How did they play an amazing Ghost on 4-5-96 when the song was debuted in 97? I know Phish is good, but they have not conquered time travel quite yet.
Definitely one of the more tastier Trey jams I've heard. Musically, not the most technical, but I think Trey would be the first to admit he's not the most technical guitarist. He can rip a nasty fucking lick, don't get me wrong (see above), but what makes him a legend is his feel/emotion. He makes that poor guitar cry...
@pbskl its his flow dude. and to be honest, trey plays a more technical guitar than most rock guitarist. how many bands change keys during their songs? how many other guitarists even use modes now a days? songs like foam, yem, ect. is some of the most technical music i've been into...
@mutoneon - I like when he calls phish an unknown band. People have only been commenting on this video of an unknown band for nearly every day for 3 years. I can't believe in his long life of 17 years he doesn't know every single great band out there. Thanks for the laugh, but now I have to restart my download again. So thanks for the sabotage too. hahahah Gerry...."did you know they were called the warlocks" hahahaha
im watching these videos trying to get into phish. isn't working incredibly well. i just feel like they are missing something compared to the dead; like the cohesiveness and the thought that was put into the playing. this seems like they all just get up there and mindlessly shred.
@playthemstrings1 I can see why you might think that from this vid. I've been to a few phish concerts and listen to a lot of different live shows...a lot, and one thing that's really hard to notice is how they feed off of each other. Trey shreds his ass off in this video so it's not as apparent, but if you listen closely to the bass and guitar you can see how they take turns leading each other. The piano also kind of directs the music for a little bit
@playthemstrings1 If you dont like this, you will never like Phish. This is pure fire. If you want to give them another shot, hook up to some woofer (w/out mike thumping you won't have Phish) Also, try some of the 2009 stuff if you are using youtube. The HD quality helps with the sound. But this Ghost is the highlight from this European tour when they were at their peak. If you can't get into this, you will not like Phish.
@pcburgh01 I disagree with your assertion. This jam, while hot, is really straightforward, without a whole lot of dynamics. Phish has played far more substantial pieces of music than this that represent a lot more diversity of influence than this straight ripper of a Ghost.
@mutoneon - oh really? like what? Big Cypress? Clifford Ball? the Runaway in Worcester? yah dude, you pick it apart and I'll keep enjoying it. you contradict yourself. it's hot, but not that great? it's not algebra dude, it's music. just enjoy it.
@pcburgh01 Believe it or not, good musicianship requires thoughtful analysis. The guys in Phish have spent plenty of time picking apart what they do. I didn't contradict myself at all; I think that you lack an appreciation for looking at music in depth. See the 11/14/95 Stash for a good example of a far more dynamic and interesting performance from this band. I can get down to a ripping summer '98 Ghost just fine, but that doesn't mean it is their best work.
@mutoneon I DON"T CARE WHAT YOU THINK! YOU ARE NOT ENLIGHTENING ME>>>>>> I DONT WANT YOUR COMMENTS! LOL who cares bro? as I said...just enjoy it...I am back here to listen to this ass kicking jam...I don't care about your analysis....stop it.
considering the dead played space and drums practically every night, i fail to follow your logic, these guys , when on, are locked into one another.
the audio isn't great here, if you listen to the official LIVEPHISH release of this, you would realize they are completely cohesive, more so, then the dead ever were, IMHO. Everything builds and plateaus, the trills are usually duplicated between multiple instruments and the lights. This is high octane, not folk rock.
@playthemstrings1 and no offense to the dead at all. i respect them a hell of a lot, but Phish is just more my cup of tea. Phish had the benefit of growing up 20 years after the dead did, and being influenced as youngsters by music that was coming out when jerry and the gang were already 30+ yrs old. ex: the funk of the 70s, the jazz-fusion of the late 60s-early 70s, british rock like traffic, hip-hop of the 80's and even the dead themselves. but in the end its all good shit
The main reason people don't like Phish is that when we try to show them, like referring these sorts of videos or recordings, nothing interesting really happens in the first minute of it.
It's really just too foreign for most people who think of music in the way they do about commercial products like Hollywood films. It was great to hear Trey defend the community (original) aspect of music when inducting Genesis. This kind of art isn't consumed or performed, but lived.
This guy is really one of the best guitar players alive/ever. Some solos are just showoff pieces. This is communication, albeit at points from another planet, one with some pretty whack stuff going on. I love this solo. BTW, the rest of the band get huge credit for laying down this nasty groove for Trey.
@guitarvocs Word - Trey is from another planet. Unfortunately, that planet was destroyed by Kerry King's shredding that came straight from hell. SLAYER!
Look at trey, he just knows he's a fuckin' boss the way he makes the crowd go crazy with his smooth fiddles of the guitar.

@playthemstrings1
considering the dead played space and drums practically every night, i fail to follow your logic, these guys , when on, are locked into one another.
the audio isn't great here, if you listen to the official LIVEPHISH release of this, you would realize they are completely cohesive, more so, then the dead ever were, IMHO. Everything builds and plateaus, the trills are usually duplicated between multiple instruments and the lights. This is high octane, not folk rock.

@SymphonicDelight the dead wish they could jam with a sense of direction like phish. i've heard so many dead jams just dissolve to nothing..
rrtierney 1 year ago

This kind of art isn't consumed or performed, but lived.

fucking brilliance - this shit lights a new bulb in my head every time

This guy is really one of the best guitar players alive/ever. Some solos are just showoff pieces. This is communication, albeit at points from another planet, one with some pretty whack stuff going on. I love this solo. BTW, the rest of the band get huge credit for laying down this nasty groove for Trey.

@guitarvocs Word - Trey is from another planet. Unfortunately, that planet was destroyed by Kerry King's shredding that came straight from hell. SLAYER!
