I think John *sang* it better, but he took so much out of it to put the flashy American Idol style into it. He sucked the power right out of the song, and made it sound like a lullaby. It just doesn't give the same feeling I get when Tom's version gets to "I wanna glide down over Mulholland, I wanna write her name in the sky. I'm gonna free fall out into nothin'. Gonna leave this, world for a while" with the "Ohhh Ayyyy!"s in the background. Haha, just makes me feel happy. :)
