  • That is how an A4 should be driven.

    None of this under-fifty-miles-per-hour nonsense.

  • @crazyracer12 EXACTLY !!!!!

  • the approaching train PHHWWWAAAAARRRRRRRRWWWWWWWWWZZOOOOOMMMMMMM!!!

and the whole station is just left awestruck...

  • sakra to je fofr

  • Please stand well back from the edge of platform 2, the next train HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  • this must be the most amazing a4 whistle ever! BRILLIANT!

  • Watched this a few times and never get bored!! A really great piece of video footage showing the A4 at its very best. She is really motoring there and the drowning out of the announcer is priceless!! Many thanks, Dave.

  • I now live in Canada, and regret to say I do not think that I will ever get the thrill again of a LIVE Streak blowing her whistle as she thunders by.Oh those schoolboy days fantastic. So sorry that my Children and Grandchildren will never have the chance. Has to be the best A4 video on the web.

  • This has to be a favourite ---I remember seeing it at Grantham in 60's and to see it again there was great . Your video is brill--right place at theright time with the best sound ever ---5star

  • Blimey Nige was after Mallards record on this run.

It may be slightly decieving but that A4 beauty was travelling at 70mph or there abouts.

  • Superb video!

  • fantastic! Nothing better than an A4 blowing it's whistle going through a station like that!

  • The word awesome is a bit overworked these days but this vid truly lives up to the word! It's been one of my favs for some time now but the way it captures the night time steam era is magnificent with the chime whistle blowing! Ta for an "awesome" vid! Ken

  • The approaching train what........ I couldnt hear through the magnificent scream of the whistle

  • still awesome no matter how many times i watch it for free like so mant others, but unlike many i supported the contribute. bu bying the dvd, regards 60009

  • Awesome video. Complete with Doppler shift.

  • "please stand well away from platform 2, the aproaching trai-" *union of south africa well and truly shuts him up*

  • tour guid says.."and as you look over to our right you see the city zoo ther it goes

  • absollutely fantastic i think the camera angle makes the video perfect

  • That is absolutely superb.

  • I took a shot of 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley from this location yesterday. Unfortunately it was nowhere near as dramatic as this one, as No.7 just costed through. The speed was the same however, and also the announcer came on just at the right moment. All it needed was a whistle from the Blue Streak which I sadly never got. 3 years to the day since I took this shot of No.9 and sadly my attempt to recreate the shot failed.

I guess what they say is true; you can never get the same shot twice!

  • @Steam1989 Still makes the hairs on my neck stand up ever time i watch it, and i supported Steam 1989 by buying the dvd, not just watched this for free. regards 60009

  • Just got shouted at by my housemate. Maybe I took your 'turn it up' instruction way too literally! Magic!

  • At last! Proof that awesomeness does exist!

  • Oh it brings back so many memories. In 1954 era used to stand on platform at Holme station (Main Line to London..Kings Cross) and watch "The Streaks" thunder through.Such speed and power. The whistle out of this world..it brings tears to your eyes. FANTASTIC!!!!

  • I watch this video a lot, may have even commented a long time ago, but it never fails to amaze.

  • Stand well away from the platform there is a train now approaching WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. Thats how a train should go through a station:D

  • That loco is like a bat out of Hell!!!!!!!

  • Train Announcer: Stand well away from the end of platform 2. The approaching....

    60009: Shut up! (Whistles) XD

  • Now THAT is how steam locos should be run!!!

  • wow

  • Who cares she's MOVING!! fantastic

  • i wonder what a general member of the public thought when they saw that!

  • @andyg3

Now if that doesn't turn you into a steam lover, what the hell does?

  • Fantastic !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The station announcement did seem a tad superfluous!

  • jeez the platform announcer was a lil late does anyone else agree

  • Raw steam power versus "Health & Safety" - nice to see and hear that steam won. David, you are blessed by being at the right place at the right time. If you have the same combination of luck and skill behind the camera, then your work will indeed be worth looking at. I will explore your commercial DVDs.

  • Wow! I just love that announcement! "Stand well away from the edge of platform 2. The approaching train is........" Then the train rushes past! I doubt anyone would have had chance to get out of the way. Still you could the whistle from miles away. Great video.

  • What a great video. Love it. Great memories.

  • Comment removed

  • bloody amazing, thanks for capturing this.

  • Love the way the loco's whistle drowns out the warning to stand clear!A4s for ever!!

  • That's my local train station! I used to work there!

  • Great Video, 5 Stars!

  • Breathtaking. KK.

  • Nice one.

  • Scenes like these were taking place all over the country, when I was a young train spotter. All this has been denied to future generations of kids? Steam specials, and a flurry of diesels, just cant replace what we once had,so sad !!

  • "Stand well back from the edge of platform 2, the apporoaching train" TOOOOT, WOOOSSSSHHHHH!!!!

  • absolutley superb! 5*

  • Damn youtube! I can only rate this 5* once!

  • I reckon this is the most exhilarating steam video on You Tube ! and those lovely Wiltshire accents at the end - fantastic.

  • Yes given the right road an A4 can still fly

  • christ she is shifting fav and 5* defo!

  • 5* brill vid

  • OMG I just heard my unmistakable uncle's voice there!!!!! TIMON.............

  • This might seem like a funny video response - I love this *****+ video of 60009 tearing through Chippenham. I also love astronomy.

Sunset on Mars is somewhat more sedate! It amazed me to see this sunset so soon after it happened. Hope you guys enjoy it.

    Sunset Mars August

  • Gee! You had to be quick!

  • Great Video, 5 Stars!

  • what memories this brings back!!!

  • believe it or not, it was bang on 75mph.

  • Going by the RPM of her drivers and those being 80", it seemed to be around 75, if not 80. They were spinning pretty fast. Either way, awesome video, and I wish more steam excursions in the U.S. were allowed to run like this. 5/5

  • @Steam1989 I figure same ;) Love it when these girls stretch their legs ;)

  • i do believe that is the voice of phil sayer in that announcement!!

  • Brill vid - 5* and fav. Fastest I've ever seen 60009 moving!

  • how fast??

  • If only those announcer recordings were quicker

'Please stand well away from the edge of platform 2...the train has gone by the time i finish this warning about it coming'

Is what it should of said

  • union of south africa is sound. i see it all the time at severn valley railway bridgenorth. the problem is that your advice to turn the sound up has blown my speakers!

  • I reckon that was somewhat exceeding the 75mph speed limit for steam trains somehow...awesome..

  • WHY THE HECK ARE YOU GUYS ON ABOUT CARS?

that was bloody awesome. simply beautiful shot. heck, she was going bloody fast awesome shot, man ;-)

  • Brilliant ---as it should be .

  • Comment removed

  • Who said steam are slow and out of date?? What an idiot/

  • CHRIST!

  • In my spotting days A4's were known as Streaks now you can see why .I rode the footplate on Quicksilver at night going to Perth when all the A4's moved to Scotland in there last days in steam we were hitting 90mph at times it was frightening but also bloody awesome

  • Thats so fast, the train INTERRUPTS the voiceover! "Stand well away from the edge of Platform 2. The approaching train..." WHOOSH!!!!

    Great video!

  • We all see this great video, the marvelous rebuild of Tornado

a vast history of railway building yet this bunch we have in power now buys rolling stock from Japan while our own work force face the dole. I just wonder why the power's that be seem to want to kill off British industry.

  • I think the era you are referring to is before the war. These days British engineering is shit and thank goodness for far eastern tooling. Thats why the Chinese rescued Rover, mate.

  • I thought the Chinese striped the old B.L car plants and sent most of the production lines back to China. I remember seeing something about it on TV ?

I know Tata ( Indian company ) bought out Land Rover Jaguar and Corus Steel.

The point is British Industry is good, but it needs help, so why buy rolling stock from Canada the US China and Japan when it should be made here, and give work to our own people first.

    .

  • British brains are the best in the world, but our heavy industry is victorian. Thats why we dominate formula one, but given the tooling, produce the Austin Allegro....

  • British skill ids excellent,British management is shit.

  • Like my typing skill.

  • Ridiculous !! Were u even ready for that amount of speed, u seemed to zoom back in rather quick HAHA 5*

  • Awesome!!!!

  • Fantastic, i rode on this engine christmas 1990. Somewhere near Bridgnorth i think. We weren't doing anywhere near this speed. Excellent.

  • steam at its awesome best!!!!!!

  • That is what they were built for.

  • Barnsleyfutborlclub -

falcons1988 is absolutely correct. The UK has huge amounts of coal reserves. It won`t be coal shotages that may spell the end; more likely to be money, skills and regulatory matters. Lets support these things while we can.

  • Look at it this way: we have, as someone already said, loads of coal reserves. Therefore, if we use coal as far as is possible, we wouldn't have to rely nearly so much on oil imported from dodgy Middle East countries, or on low grade "coal" shipped in vast quantities from China. Make use of our own resources. it's surely just common sense.

Coal, I think, could be the fuel of the future. All the other things: skills, regulatory matters, they can be overcome.

  • That was amazing

  • Happy days stood on Donny station in the late 40s and early 50s listening for that special sound wishing to be a engine driver, never quite made it officialy, off the record did plenty, but only on the frieght side

  • Fucking Nora!

Just basically what they were built for.

  • I think the A4 whistle put FGW announcer man in his place - certainly drowned the bugger out

  • Unreal, this video clip always excites me whenever i watch it,some excellent camera and sound work.

    AWESOME INDEED

  • Great vision, great audio, great impact as many night rail scenes can offer.I just hope you Brits can keep these locos on the main lines as many would rather see them consigned to a sedate tourist railway situation. These locomotives were designed to travel at high speed and provided that they are kept in safe working order...why not?

    Cheers from Down Under.

  • fooken fantastic vid mate, 5*

  • it a good one tell you i like speed of it the best i seen on speed of the A4 60009 i look at this most of the time its the best i have seen long time on here 100% of the A4

  • that will be good on dvd is it on a dvd

  • No it isn't anymore. It was on "Mainline Diary 2007" but i stopped making them a while ago because i felt the quality of the rest of the video was rather pants compared to what i can produce now. This shot is the only real jaw-breaker from that DVD so i'll keep it on Youtube.

  • if these were to be brought back in service it would improve the UK railway networks

    for several reasons

#1, the rail service would be more effiecient

#2, steam can produce more power than diesel and electric

#3, more people would travel by rail

#4,there would be more jobs available

#5, no more obese locomotive operators

#6, more money would be pulled in by the railway

  • Beneath our feet millions are of tons of coal. With modern boilers coal can be burnt efficiently, yet we buy oil and gas from some less than friendly countries, who rip us off all they can. It makes me wonder where this country is going ?

  • well, the simple answer to that is my friend, no-where!

we seem to be going round in circles, the same old problems over and over again, and what does the Government do?, most of the time sod all!, but when they do actually get off of their arse and do something, be warned, because it is going to be something drastic and very stupid

  • I agree with you. We need a change.

  • bringing back steam would really improve the railways

  • but you are forgetting one little problem, which is fossil fuels, as you should no we are losing natural resources such as coal gas and oil so we will lose those and will not be able to run the locos which is a real shame but i do think you are right with that comment..

  • we have 300 years worth of coal buried in the U.K. alone.

  • Sir Nigel was one hell of a engine designer.

He would have been dead chuffed to see his creations still exciting young and old in the 21C.

    Good on yer Nige

  • Now that seemed quick, heaven knows what Mallards 126 would be like.

A nice video with impressive sound.

  • What a video!

  • That was awesome! how fast do you think it was going?

  • 75mph

  • or thereabouts :)

  • I am a South African Rail fan. That was bloodie awsome.

  • Unbelievable WOW Nice footage

  • Nice footage, and also nice to see an A4 get a chance to show some reasonable high speed work. They were not "playing" about there 4 sure. That could easily have been the early 1940's on a regular Flying Scotsman train. I still like a LMS Duchess pacific, but an A4 is an exceptional piece of engineering. The ultimate would be to let both an A4 and a Duchess both run circa 100mph again in an inter-change trial like enviroment. The loco's are as well maintained as ever, maybe one day.....

  • i have 2 things to say 1) this video is a reyt one, i wish i could get some footage but i tend to take photos except if you view my oliver cromwell departure from carlisle thats not bad i supose and number 2 i am already half deaf and that has not really done anything good to my ears it is that loud, great vid and hope to be viewing some more fantastic videos from you 5*

  • Unbelievable!!

  • weeeEEEEEEOOOOOoooow... That was faaast! 8]

  • still grinning and watching

  • that was ace

  • She runs out of NRM right?

  • No, she's owned by a man called John Cameron, who also owns 61994 "The Great Maquess". Both are based in Scotland.

  • where in Scotland. I am a US railfan but I am still curious. If I go there again i would like to see her run.

  • Thornton Depot is where the locos are based, however i don't know where exactly in Scotland that is. I suspect its near Perth. I've also learned that she's had a bolier retube, and will be running for about another 2-3 years at most before she's withdrawn for Overhaul.

  • If you were at the East Lancshire Railway the passed weekend, 61994 was running steam speicles.

  • Hi Steam 1989, excellent video. I have seen and been on 60009 on numerous occasions. Only on footplate when stationary. Thornton junction is on the ECML just north of Kirkcaldy, Fife and approximately 20 miles north of Forth Bridge on A92. John Cameron is a most down to earth amenable fellow. If you get to Thornton and see a man with overalls and a lovely head of white hair then that is most certainly John Cameron. Don't be afraid to approach him. Your video is a classic. Keep up the good work.

  • Brilliant - eleventh time

    Thanks Steam 1989

  • Just watched it for about the tenth time.

Sorry you missed it all by two generations Steam1989. they really were great days. I was born in 1940 and regularly went up north on the Flying Scotsman

  • Yes. Just like it used to be in the 40's and 50's, standing on a platform at night and one of the great beasts comes charging through.

As others have said bloody marvellous. Thank God for Dai Woodham and all the preservation societies.

  • My Dad has had the pleasure of driving this beauty a couple of times. Unfortunately the first time it didn't go to plan. Wrong type of coal! Great vid.

  • Absolutely fantastic video. Beautifully captured. all the best with future clips. from Duncan

  • That has got to be the best video on youtube B---dy fantastic

  • Sends shivers down my spine. XD

  • How is this spam? I agree!

  • don't know why. how odd

  • It's not a Spamcan, it's a Streak.

    :P

Actually, I expect someone just clicked the 'spam' button by mistake rather than 'reply'.

  • Ya beauty,

Well done a brilliant capture of what it was all about.

    Great atmosphere captured for ever!

  • hi steam 1989 please please could you put the clip with tangmere and clanline coming through reading back on.. thanks! for your clips really enjoy them....

  • After just finding the best video ever, it now says no longer available. Any idea why.

  • Strange. It seems to be working to me.

  • thanks, Its working for me now. Didnt know it was part of a dvd which I am now buying, regards David

  • fantastic, brings back memories of when I used to stand on Willesden juction station at night when they wre really getting wound up. No chime whistles, but when your twelve years old and they come out of the dark, awrsome, thanks

  • Those A4s still have quite a bit of power left!

  • Brings back fond memories of when my grandfather put a florin on the line at Berwick and it was squashed by Miles Beevor. Jumpers for goalposts....

  • Fantastic.What a brill vid.I think the announcer was a little late!!They go through Nuneaton faster-just-with no warning!Thankyou.

  • Loved how the chime whistle drowned out the station announcer LOL

  • that was very loud?

  • Ok so it's probably not as loud on the computer. But when i took that shot the noise was truly defening. You really had to be there to understand what it was like.

  • Hi, Steam 1989, great video, any idea why its no longer available, best regards Cleenol

  • *ding dong*

passengers on platform 2 stand well away from the edg *peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep*

  • Terrific video! Great fast loco with a great whistle!

  • My Lordz What a Vid!

  • Marvellous,

But you were a bit lucky, I mean the announcement of the station-master, interupted by the whistle.

    Diesfie

  • I was very lucky. I might be pushing it but i think one could describe this is a potential "once in a life time shot".

  • yup, might as well give up with the camera now mate, you'll never get better than that!!!

Congrats, an excellent piece of film

  • PRE OTMR DAYS WERE GREAT, what she is said to of reached down whiteball in preservation days wont be repeated sadly.

  • great vid, and some great accents at the end!

  • BRILLIANT VID- WELL CAPTURED, PAL!

  • Operation Western Streak!!

  • Awsome, pitty I'm in York really, might have to shoot north to one of the little dissused stations for that!

  • Now.....THAT was GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I didn't think my all time favourite 55022 + 50049 full chat on Autumn Highlander return from NapierNimbus would be surpassed, but this clip beats it into second place.Fantastic!!

  • STREAK!!!!!

  • I was there in the 50's on the ECML. Sights like these were common. I shall never forget them.

  • Sights in which i'm 2 generations too late!! "sob"

  • that was cool well done

  • Unbeatable: A4 at speed + chime whistle + Doppler effect.

Good old Doppler. Good old Nige. Good old you! Nice vid.

  • Don't you just hate being born in 1989 sometimes? I know I do. Thanks for the comment on my Tangmere vid, wish she'd been going this fast!

  • Dude, if I could some how Steal Dr.Who's Tardis, i'd take my camera and tripod with me back to the 50s!

  • Can I come?

  • Hell yeah!

  • Simply a storming run. Ive herd tales she has done well beyond the speed shown here, in preservation years but these are completly unofficial you understand!!!

  • oh man!! she was flyin,,kl

  • that was amazing!! what a amazing video !!!10/10/10/10/ wow amazing ,,shes a lovely engine and is running so well,,,damn fine show

  • Magic - is that good or what.
