Watched this a few times and never get bored!! A really great piece of video footage showing the A4 at its very best. She is really motoring there and the drowning out of the announcer is priceless!! Many thanks, Dave.
I now live in Canada, and regret to say I do not think that I will ever get the thrill again of a LIVE Streak blowing her whistle as she thunders by.Oh those schoolboy days fantastic. So sorry that my Children and Grandchildren will never have the chance. Has to be the best A4 video on the web.

I took a shot of 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley from this location yesterday. Unfortunately it was nowhere near as dramatic as this one, as No.7 just costed through. The speed was the same however, and also the announcer came on just at the right moment. All it needed was a whistle from the Blue Streak which I sadly never got. 3 years to the day since I took this shot of No.9 and sadly my attempt to recreate the shot failed.
I guess what they say is true; you can never get the same shot twice!
@Steam1989 Still makes the hairs on my neck stand up ever time i watch it, and i supported Steam 1989 by buying the dvd, not just watched this for free. regards 60009
Oh it brings back so many memories. In 1954 era used to stand on platform at Holme station (Main Line to London..Kings Cross) and watch "The Streaks" thunder through.Such speed and power. The whistle out of this world..it brings tears to your eyes. FANTASTIC!!!!
Stand well away from the platform there is a train now approaching WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. Thats how a train should go through a station:D
Raw steam power versus "Health & Safety" - nice to see and hear that steam won. David, you are blessed by being at the right place at the right time. If you have the same combination of luck and skill behind the camera, then your work will indeed be worth looking at. I will explore your commercial DVDs.
Wow! I just love that announcement! "Stand well away from the edge of platform 2. The approaching train is........" Then the train rushes past! I doubt anyone would have had chance to get out of the way. Still you could the whistle from miles away. Great video.
Scenes like these were taking place all over the country, when I was a young train spotter. All this has been denied to future generations of kids? Steam specials, and a flurry of diesels, just cant replace what we once had,so sad !!
Going by the RPM of her drivers and those being 80", it seemed to be around 75, if not 80. They were spinning pretty fast. Either way, awesome video, and I wish more steam excursions in the U.S. were allowed to run like this. 5/5

falcons1988 is absolutely correct. The UK has huge amounts of coal reserves. It won`t be coal shotages that may spell the end; more likely to be money, skills and regulatory matters. Lets support these things while we can.
Look at it this way: we have, as someone already said, loads of coal reserves. Therefore, if we use coal as far as is possible, we wouldn't have to rely nearly so much on oil imported from dodgy Middle East countries, or on low grade "coal" shipped in vast quantities from China. Make use of our own resources. it's surely just common sense.
Coal, I think, could be the fuel of the future. All the other things: skills, regulatory matters, they can be overcome.
Happy days stood on Donny station in the late 40s and early 50s listening for that special sound wishing to be a engine driver, never quite made it officialy, off the record did plenty, but only on the frieght side
Great vision, great audio, great impact as many night rail scenes can offer.I just hope you Brits can keep these locos on the main lines as many would rather see them consigned to a sedate tourist railway situation. These locomotives were designed to travel at high speed and provided that they are kept in safe working order...why not?
it a good one tell you i like speed of it the best i seen on speed of the A4 60009 i look at this most of the time its the best i have seen long time on here 100% of the A4
No it isn't anymore. It was on "Mainline Diary 2007" but i stopped making them a while ago because i felt the quality of the rest of the video was rather pants compared to what i can produce now. This shot is the only real jaw-breaker from that DVD so i'll keep it on Youtube.
Beneath our feet millions are of tons of coal. With modern boilers coal can be burnt efficiently, yet we buy oil and gas from some less than friendly countries, who rip us off all they can. It makes me wonder where this country is going ?
well, the simple answer to that is my friend, no-where!
we seem to be going round in circles, the same old problems over and over again, and what does the Government do?, most of the time sod all!, but when they do actually get off of their arse and do something, be warned, because it is going to be something drastic and very stupid
but you are forgetting one little problem, which is fossil fuels, as you should no we are losing natural resources such as coal gas and oil so we will lose those and will not be able to run the locos which is a real shame but i do think you are right with that comment..
Nice footage, and also nice to see an A4 get a chance to show some reasonable high speed work. They were not "playing" about there 4 sure. That could easily have been the early 1940's on a regular Flying Scotsman train. I still like a LMS Duchess pacific, but an A4 is an exceptional piece of engineering. The ultimate would be to let both an A4 and a Duchess both run circa 100mph again in an inter-change trial like enviroment. The loco's are as well maintained as ever, maybe one day.....
i have 2 things to say 1) this video is a reyt one, i wish i could get some footage but i tend to take photos except if you view my oliver cromwell departure from carlisle thats not bad i supose and number 2 i am already half deaf and that has not really done anything good to my ears it is that loud, great vid and hope to be viewing some more fantastic videos from you 5*
Thornton Depot is where the locos are based, however i don't know where exactly in Scotland that is. I suspect its near Perth. I've also learned that she's had a bolier retube, and will be running for about another 2-3 years at most before she's withdrawn for Overhaul.
Hi Steam 1989, excellent video. I have seen and been on 60009 on numerous occasions. Only on footplate when stationary. Thornton junction is on the ECML just north of Kirkcaldy, Fife and approximately 20 miles north of Forth Bridge on A92. John Cameron is a most down to earth amenable fellow. If you get to Thornton and see a man with overalls and a lovely head of white hair then that is most certainly John Cameron. Don't be afraid to approach him. Your video is a classic. hi steam 1989 please please could you put the clip with tangmere and clanline coming through reading back on.. thanks! for your clips really enjoy them....
fantastic, brings back memories of when I used to stand on Willesden juction station at night when they wre really getting wound up. No chime whistles, but when your twelve years old and they come out of the dark, awrsome, thanks
Ok so it's probably not as loud on the computer. But when i took that shot the noise was truly defening. You really had to be there to understand what it was like.
I didn't think my all time favourite 55022 + 50049 full chat on Autumn Highlander return from NapierNimbus would be surpassed, but this clip beats it into second place.Fantastic!!
Simply a storming run. Ive herd tales she has done well beyond the speed shown here, in preservation years but these are completly unofficial you understand!!!
That is how an A4 should be driven.
None of this under-fifty-miles-per-hour nonsense.

if these were to be brought back in service it would improve the UK railway networks
for several reasons
#1, the rail service would be more effiecient
#2, steam can produce more power than diesel and electric
#3, more people would travel by rail
#4,there would be more jobs available
#5, no more obese locomotive operators
#6, more money would be pulled in by the railway

It's not a Spamcan, it's a Streak.

Actually, I expect someone just clicked the 'spam' button by mistake rather than 'reply'.

Brings back fond memories of when my grandfather put a florin on the line at Berwick and it was squashed by Miles Beevor. Jumpers for goalposts....

Fantastic.What a brill vid.I think the announcer was a little late!!They go through Nuneaton faster-just-with no warning!Thankyou.

that was very loud?
mick5eye 3 years ago
Ok so it's probably not as loud on the computer. But when i took that shot the noise was truly defening. You really had to be there to understand what it was like.

I was very lucky. I might be pushing it but i think one could describe this is a potential "once in a life time shot".
