I grinned when I listened to this- I've heard Nillson stomp all over tenors in Turandot before. That's not happening with Corelli!

Ah, how I miss the 60s and visits to the Met to see and hear Corelli give his all for us. No saving of the voice for the future, just his all with strength and beauty of voice with surprising Diminuendos for a change of pace. Wish there were more videos with Birgit and Franco. Joe C.

Corelli hater and lovers alike agree on one thing: no one sang Calaf better. I just don't see how anyone could come near him in this role. Sure his voice wasn't suited for lyrical roles and he had some strange mannerisms, but this was undoubtedly one of the most glorious sounds to come from a man's throat.

Corelli is my all time favorite. My friend
who had won the Met audtions in the
60s was on stage with him for 24
performances during his three years at
the Met. He was an outstanding spinto
tenor in his own right...called Corelli the
greatest vocal tenor of the past century.
