A fine musician, songsmith, vocalist and human being.
He's learned how to find, trust and lay back in the groove.
Anytime I hear one of his songs it's like running into an old best friend and remembering the past or listening to a tale about his current life, all the while he is more curious about your life.
He's right on about the current state of songwriting. We need to follow his lead and get back to endorsing just plain ol' good songs sung well -- not this syrupy, overly-simplistic 3-chord junk that is sold w/silicone boobs and equally plastic dance moves.
@DRpokeme There's a really good DVD called the Songwriters. It's many of the old Brill Building writers- Carole King, Gerry Goffin, Ellie Grenwich, (Neil Sedaka?), Burt Bacharach...
@ejgiv Why would you say that? James Taylor shouldn't be considered overrated because he writes songs, or reinterprets other peoples songs in ways that alot of people like. I can understand if you are an emotionless hunk of crap that listens to things like today's so called "music" and lives in his parents basement, thats a good reason not to LISTEN to James Taylor. But his songs stir a large amount of the population emotionally, and his music has changed the lives of many. Overated? I say no.
James has so much talent & is based on so much on emotion & experiences throughout his life that it's a difficult task for a normal guy to know what he should ask & why...
@cuddleyduddley He sounds like he's reading from a script written for him instead of actually asking questions he cares about learning the answers to.
James Taylor does music that lives on for every generation and is a model for evolving music and musicians. SWEET acoustic cover solo of "RADAR" on You Tube by Timmy D, lead singer of San Diego band "Pullman Standard" is DEFINITELY worth the listening. This 'guy' cover version gives "RADAR" a kick into a new dimension. Check it out to hear it, download it, twitter it, --Please YouTube "Pullman Standard" EPK. and myspace for their great original music.
I just love this man! Just went to see him and he was amazing - covers and old songs alike. I thought I wouldn't care for the covers so much, but I was wrong! And the band were amazing too
the guys a god just check out the frozen man on the one man band dvd who else could do that and the interveiwer is bad and not in a micheal jacson way
Haha great interview.. I love the terrible lighting though!! James has such a kind face, and those famous blue eyes, and you can't see any of it here... the video makes him look like a prison inmate!
It was wonderful to see him do some of these tunes live. He has put together the most amazing band ever. And I didn't feel for a minute like I was going to get shivved. :P
oh we really don't need to defend James. You love him or he's ok. i don't think anybody hates him. this is a fun album of songs. i have always said that i would buy james singing the phone book. and i will.
I saw his latest concert and I've been a fan for over 40 yrs, and to be honest, I was very disappointed. I did not like the selection of music nor the band 'the legends' behind him. The CD is not live, as he stated in an interview.
That's such a surprise. I have seen JT 20 or so times over the years, and he has ALWAYS put on a great show. Sorry to hear that.....great is usually ALWAYS great, but I suppose even Michael Jordan & Kobe Bryant had an off night every now and then.
Actually, I do think that some tracks on this CD were live, in that they were recorded by the group all at once, as opposed to laying down tracks one at a time. So, while there was no audience there, I think it was a live, whole-group recording.
I'm a musician and cover James all the time, he's an all time great and will always be. He's my number one person I like to cover, he's awesome! I have this album and ITS AWESOME! PLEASE PASS THE WORD GO GET IT!!!
just bought it for my dad's birthday...gave it to him and upon hearing the first few tracks he said that James just gets better and better with every single album.
I takes a lot of presumption to knock a person that has influenced an entire current generation's music. And quite telling and humbling to here what he thinks of our musical ability. Maybe we should shut up and listen for once.
yes macman...james taylor obviously sucks balls from the 6 grammys, multiple gold and platinum records, and induction into the songwriters and rock and rock halls of fame...you're an idiot.
you suck balls james taylor is one of the best guitarist and a great singer why don't you go listen to gay music and stop naming good music bad stuff.
C'mon James just say the state of song writing today....SUCKS.

James is great. No offense, but this interviewer sucks. James is just being a good guy. The interviewer is way uptight. He needs to relax.

Here's a cover idea, imagine James covering "Sunshine" by Jonathan Edwards. Wouldn't that be cool?
