Thank you Sarah for being inspring. I'm 26 and had a head injury 18 months ago. Have mild aphasia, I can't read (comprehension) but can write ok. Can't go back to my profession due to my difficulties but the SLP and OT are helping. Aphasia is so frustrating, how do you communicate with strangers? Even with mild aphasia I find myself getting frustrated when I can't get the word and even more so when strangers get impatient.
Sarah, you're inspiring!!! I wish you all the best and since I'm a teacher I would like to talk about you in my class... don't give up, you said so, it's all a matter of attitude :D Thank you very much!!! :D
@wolfumz hello! Sarah is looking at her medical bracelet, which lists her condition, including aphasia. Although she has problems reading, she can often look at single written words and they prompt her to say them out loud. The bracelet is handy in case she is in an accident - paramedics can phone the number on the bracelet and find out up to date medical history.
It's amazing that as soon as Sarah starts writing or when she's about to write, her brain remembers the word. There must be some motor-brain connection there
Sarah, you have made such great progress!!! I have followed you on "YouTube" from your first video and I am amazed at your high spirits, hard work and tremendous progress. You are honestly a unique person. I havent met you before but I am proud of you. Keep up the good work! It is amazing how the brain makes new connections to do the same things as before the stroke. Good luck Sarah. I hope that you will keep updating your progress. I am truly interested in your progress.
I had a stroke 6yrs ago at 35 and have aphasia, speech therapy vital in my recovery and i have no idea how i'd be now without it- you're video's really encouraging and it's important to be positive and having realistic goals, like you say keeping the mind active and happy very good for progress. It can be a long road to recovery at times, keep going and good to see you making progress!!
You are doing better with each update! :0) I've found that improvement doesn't really have a time limit. I just got some temperature sensation in my feet almost four years post stroke. :0) Keep on being awesome!
This is amazing bug im just a bit confused im learning about the brain in my ap psychology class and from what im hearing...
she has problems reading which probably means there's problems with her understanding of words which means (from my understanding) that there is damage in wernickes area too probably not a lot because she understand ts the interviewer.
@CancorseTV1 I just watched this in my Linguistics class and we briefly discussed the same thing. It's possible that she has some damage in both the Broca's and Wernicke's areas of her brain. It appears that the dominant amount of damage occurred in the Broca's, but there could be some damage in the Wernicke's as well; which accounts for her difficulty in reading. I think that since a majority of the damage is in the Broca's, that's what they are focusing on most. Either way she's doing so well!
@blueturtle298 I agree that there is damage in the broca's area and possibly a small lesion in the wernicke's. When there is damage in the wernicke's the patient usualy speeks fluently but the words spoken have no meaning to each other. In this case with sarah, she does not have speech that shows wernicke's aphasia (not implying that there is no damage in the wernicke's) An fMRI may show damage in the area.
@markstevens20869 Sarah had a research MRI last week in London and it was amazing to see how large the damage was. It was localised to the Broca area as far as the neurologist could see, but we're waiting for a more detailed report.
@CancorseTV1 Hello cancorse..you asked for clarification on Broca's Aphasia. I am a 3rd year cognitive psych student and Ive learned that when there is damage to the Broca's area the patient does understand words but the brain has trouble producing speech from thoughts.
When will you come to the U.S. I just watched all of the videos and I think I fell in love. Sarah, you are one amazing girl. If you have made that kind of progress in just two and a half years I would love to see what kind of progress you will have made after four or five. Please keep up with the videos.
Sarah, my compliments on your progress!! Please keep on posting as we want to see your progress. My daughter told me about the Utube sites for aphasia. She is a graduate student for speech therapy in Chicago. I am so proud of her to think that she can change lives and help people.
That she does dressage is interesting! Dressage requires highly detailed, nuanced physical communication through the body. Interesting distinction between communication and language, or that language is a distinct cognitive process.
This is so inspiring, I don't know anyone who has had a stroke but this has given me the awareness to be able to spot it, and also understand it. So glad to see you are happy. I watched all your video's on here and I really hope everything you do works out for you. All the best
Hi Sarah how are you, I’ve got a PC program it called Dragon natural speaking you may of hard of It for me I can’t spell, sentences, but the program is good and got another program natural reader and it’s free it’s recording but the American accent its crap, keep doing it is hard for you and me Cheers Paul

Everyone knows the feeling when a certain word is on the tip of your tongue. I can't even comprehend the frustration that might cause having this feeling all the time. It's good to see that you haven't let that get to you. It's interesting how you managed to keep up a fluid conversation if either side kept their responses short and concise. The longer you had to keep talking without a response, the harder it got to form complete sentences.
THANK YOU!! You are amazingly inspirational! You've given an important reminder of how to appreciate everything in life. I came across your videos by chance (I'm a first year medical student wanting to find out more about aphasia). I just watched your first two videos, immediately followed by this one. I am so, so thankful to have seen them! Best wishes for the future!!
Your story and progress is inspiring!! My Professor showed the videos of your progress in class today, and we were all taken aback and really impressed by how well you've been doing! You're story has inspired me to never back down from accomplishing your dream! Thank you Sarah! And good luck in the rest of your progress!!
Thank you! this is such an incredible story to witness. I hope Sarah keeps on improving, its inspiring!
unfortunately a close friend of mine who is 17 just suffered a stroke and is in hospital. can you give me any info on what to expect after his recovery and how to help in his recovery.
Hi, I was on YouTube one morning when I noticed the word aphasia in someone else's "liked videos" section of their page and, as I knew what it meant already, stopped by, watched, and posted then.
I know you say you still can't read, but, I'd still say try speed reading.
Interesting the way writing a word can help you remember how to say it as, yes, I'm hearing the gaps. And though you're (both of you) trying not to over-rely on prompting, in many informal contexts some prompting is normal.
@Folkmill ...to continue: I ended up living back at home as an adult. And I really had to stand my ground and dig my heels in on some aspects of routine--so I'd retain the ability to get myself up in the morning!
I can see how that tendency for both generations to regress could feel so very impelling when re-learning key aspects of language--something from so early in life.
As such, you are (both) right to keep vigilant on it, but it's both more, and less, than prompting to watch out for.
I met your mum today at The Stroke Association Forum in Cambridge and she told my friend and I about you and the progress you have made and these videos. Thanks for sharing your experience - you're inspirational !
@SymphUK Must be good to have money and the ability to go through treatment. If it was my parents and I had a stroke, they would just tell me to take some aspirin. Then if I had trouble speaking they would just tell me that I'm stupid and/or mentally handicapped.
@UniverseOffspring treatment is free in the UK, under the National Health System. It sounds like you don't have a very good relationship with your parents :-/
I just watched all your videos that you have on Youtube. Sarah's Story is very inspiring. My father in law had stroke year ago. I wish, he would be so optimistic as Sarah is! She did amazing progress! I wish her all the best. I hope. you will record her progress, so everybody can see how amazing she is! Take care. Sincerely, Pavlina Dropka

@reichlovap Pavlina thank you for your comment. We hope that your father in law has made a good recovery, it's hard to be optimistic after a stroke, but I think it does encourage people to make better progress. All the best x
My god you're the best!! Thanks Miss Sarah's mom for doing and uploading the videos on youtube! and Sarah, I hope this is not anoying you, because it helps us a lot!! (Yes i'm another neuroscience student) Yes the videos are inspiring for the people who have suffered a stroke, but it is so inspiring for us too! And it might also be inspiring for people who are only in search of inspiration! If I wasn't already married, I would probably propose to u!
Sarah, it is good that you are sharing your story. Thanks for sharing it :) From your video, I learnt that you are having problems reading and writing. I want to challenge you. I believe that you will be able to read and write again, but it will take time and a lot of work. I suggest you start reading books again if you haven`t started yet. I suggest you start reading children books and then increase the level of difficulty as you go on. Please give it a try and thank you :)
i just watched your video's after learning about aphasia at university. being the same age as you, i find you a real inspiration. I cant imagine what it would be like to go through but you have handled yourself so well and made amazing progress. Good luck everything and keep smiling :)
That... After viewing the first two videos--- that's a remarkable improvement in terms of returning to a state of fluency in sentence production. Full, comprehensible sentences. Your daughter has an amazing frontal lobe. Good work on that degree of recovery!
I study psychology and we were shown your viedos in class today. They were truly inspiring! I teared up a bit, I must admit, but everyone can really learn something from your story and view on life in general and you are so so brave to share this with the world!
I was just wondering. Has sign language ever been an option or would that be just as difficult to learn?
We saw your first video during a lecture and are truly amazed by the way you are coping. You made great progress in those 2 years. Keep on being such a determined person.
Sarah! I know what you can do as a career. You can do cosmetology. Something to do with hair or makeup. I think that occupation will be perfect for you.
~ Sarah!! You are such a BEAUTIFUL person!! Thank you for sharing your story! You must realize that you are an INTERNATIONAL inspiration and people receive immeasurable strength from you!! My mom had a stroke and I admire your tenacity! GOD BLESS YOU!! Lynn -from Texas.
You are so inspirational Sarah! I watched your first video in my linguistics class today and I'm so happy to see the progress you've made since you filmed that! Please keep us updated :)
It's really great to see how much you have improved since your first video. It really sheds light on hopes. I wish to all people with this difficulty to be able to fight like you and never lose hope. Best wishes and take care!
BTW it's so great to see how useful science and techniques can be to people.
What a remarkable improvement from the first two videos, it's quite inspiring. Thanks very much for sharing this with everyone, and please let us know how you're doing in the future. You have many people hoping for the best that you'll never meet, Sarah!
Wow, I watched the first video in class a year ago as we were studying aphasia, and now watching this, it's obvious her speech is so much better! Well done :)
i too am 2 years post stroke, i have come to the point that i say, i wouldn't choose a stroke but i would not change the life i have now either. You are doing really well!
Thank you both so much for sharing your experiences. I talk about expressive and receptive aphasias in my neuroscience course at Boston College, and am going to use your first and last videos to demonstrate the symptoms, as well as the amazing plasticity and repair potential of our brains! Keep up the hard work, it will continue to pay off. - Joe
Thankyou for posting the update, lots of progress seems to have happened since the last video! The support group charity sounds like an excellent project too! I hope the driving tests go well, good luck :-)
Hi Sarah, You are beautiful! My son, Coleton, had a stroke much the same as yours. He is 17 turning 18 on Saturday. Coleton has expressive and reseptive aphasia. He also has apraxia. Coleton swelling was so severe they had to do a crainectomy to save his life. There are not many young people that are having to go through this type stroke and I am looking to find something to help Coleton get through this. Can you offer any advice? He feels so alone and seems to be pushing his friends away.Karen
@searchingmother so sorry to hear about Coleton's illness and disability - hope he had a good birthday! Sarah is 21 this weekend, so it's a happy time despite the challenges she faces. I don't know where you live, but here in the UK, positive help has come from support groups like Headway and Connect and the support of speech therapists. Friendships can be one of the most difficult things to maintain after a brain injury and many people can become depressed it's worth getting him assessed.
Do you have the same difficulty thinking as with speaking? Or perhaps you don't think in words? I just watched all 3 videos and your progress is incredible, you have a lot to be proud of. :)
You know I've sat here and tried to imagine what it would be like not to be able to express myself verbally or be able to read or write and I don't think I could imagine anything more frustrating. It must be so isolating, especially in the beginning. As a writer I've often sat there groping around for a word, I think I'd go mad feeling that way perpetually. Your determination and optimistic outlook are truly inspirational and I have no doubt that you'll continue to make strides. Best of luck!
@Aphelionite thank you for taking the time to leave a comment. Sarah was always told that writing was her 'gift' so you can imagine how hard it has been to lose that skill.
you are amazing Sarah, I saw your progress with the last 2 videos. It's amazing. Good luck with your driving test! You know I don't ride horses myself. Now after I see how you have improved even more, I think everything is possible.
I'm glad I watched this series. Sarah clearly improved a lot since the first one. She seems really cool too. I hope she continues to recover steadily.
Sarah is amazing, truely an inspiration. I have 2 questions: How can Sarah's writing help her with her speech? And if she can write down a word and not be able to read full sentences?
Sarah- Your progress is truly amazing. You have grown so much and your attitude is unbelieveable. You are quite beautiful and your love of life is fantastic. Keep that same wonderful spirit that makes you who you are. Best of luck to you in the future and thank you so much for showing others how to really appreciate what we have and to be truly happy.
hey sarah my name is bec and im 25, i had a major stroke around 3 years ago after a car crash. i lost most movement in my right side of my body and suffer from aphasia, ive had speech physio for the last few years and have made some great progress in learning to talk, write and read again. I still have trouble walking and getting around and have only just been back to work for a few hours a week. good luck sarah and i wish you all the best. i know what going through, your a very strong person.
@becweldon hi Bec, good to hear from you. It's great to hear that you are making good progress and we wish you all the best. It's a long road and hard work, but never give up!
Sarah, you are so awesome! You've made such amazing progress from the first video! Love your positive attitude and amazing smile :-) Glad to see you're happy and have such a supportive family. Keep on keepin' on. - B, From California
Your an inspiration to everyone Sarah, you made so much progress in such a short time keep up the great work. It shows you put alot of effort into your speech therapy. Wish you all the best ,stay positive and never give up!
You talk about not going to the University. Don't limit yourself. There is a University especially for people with Acquired Brain Injuries in Santa Monica CA. There is also a radio station for the brain injured. It's called brain injury radio at 7 PM Pacific time in U.S. Hope, Health, and Happiness, Vickie
@realestatesavant1 if only we lived in the US! The idea of a Uni for brain injured people sounds brilliant. Thanks for taking the time to comment on Sarah's video :)
Your video and your accomplishments are wonderful. Each year can get better. I watch as my son watches your videos. I think he's in love with you. He was you. He had a brain injury in 1994. He has aphasia. He has had so many accomplishments himself. Marcus and I applaud your perseverance and strength. The Lord gave you a wonderful mom for support! See Conversations with Marcus Rosenberger on YouTube. Listening to music will help you get your words back.
I've just come across these three videos, and the improvement is dramatic. Your progress is inspiring. Your determination is inspiring. Your outlook is inspiring. The world loves you; even when it isn't easy for you, we can see you glowing.
I wondered how Sarah and the family are doing many times when I use facebook most of all. I was pretty happy when I noticed the update today! Sarah sounds amazing, the positive attitude is great and Sarah looks wonderful (love your hair!).
Just viewed your video with our son that had a brain aneurysm rupture when he was 17. He has the same aphasia as you. You are such a blessing and this was so encouraging. Keep working hard and it gets easier. He is 26 and married now to a wonderful woman. Keep encouraging people with this same issue. Blessings friend' Kelley Trulove
However crazy this idea may sound, but do you think Sarah would be interested in learning another language? Maybe something completely different grammatically from English. If not the results, maybe the process itself may be interesting to her.
Some studies show that a second language may be stored in a different area of the left hemisphere. Maybe learning another language will improve her ability to communicate.
Aphasie in bilinguals: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8498202
Thanks so much for the posted videos following Sarah's progress! Although aiming to be a future medical student, I'm currently studying aphasia and how the brain processes speech in order to present it for speech class. Your story, Sarah, has really been an aid in my understanding of this complex subject. Again, thanks for taking the time to share and I wish you the best of luck as you continue to improve and keep an amazing positive attitude about your situation! You're truly an inspiration.
I was wondering, what about maths? Can she work mathematical problems and solve equations? Keep strong Sarah! You are a wonderful person! I hope your driving test went well. All the best!
@trendytrendytrend Sarah can do simple sums, we haven't really tried her on anything more complex. Thanks for your comment, actually it's an interesting idea to see what her maths skills are like now.
@SymphUK Thank you, I'm glad you liked the suggestion. I am very interested in aphasia (I think I might research it for my master's thesis) and I would love it if you could get back to me after trying it out. All the best to you and Sarah, she rocks!
Watching Sarah is like watching my boyfriend they are so very similar with their progress. He was 32 when he had the stroke so being younger has it's advantages. He really wants to work again. We found a stroke support group finally and there are many young people who are going through the samething. They also have an Aphasia support group that we will be attending in a few weeks. Good luck to you Sarah keep up the hard work.
@adriannejw thanks for your message, it's actually good to see that there are other people out there going through something similar (although of course we wouldn't wish it on anyone). You may have heard that we're starting a support group in our area, it's turning out to be a lot of work but I think it will be worth the effort. Good luck to your boyfriend with his driving, keep going!
My boyfriend also had a stroke 5/22/09. He is still progressing also. This is a great thing you have done by recording Sarah's progress. I wish we would have done the same. He also has tried his driving test about 4 months ago and had failed the written 3 times.
It is really great to see how well you are doing Sarah, as other comments have mentioned, you can really see a great improvement. A really mature look on life, an inspiration to everyone. Keep up all the hard work! x
Sarah you are an absolute inspiration! I am just about to finish my speech therapy degree (final exam tomorrow!) and having struggled through 4 years of Uni its so lovely to see that the work we do can make such a difference! Your attitude is fantastic and I'm so inspired to get out there and use the skills I have learnt to help those in need!
Sarah you are so gorgeous and such an inspiration and I'm so happy it seems you have a bunch of fans here (myself included) following your progress! It seems you are doing terrific and I'm so glad! Congratulations to you and your support team :) You are really young, take your time finding something you are passionate about and remember technology is always creating new ways to let us share our world, so go for whatever you want and love doing even if you can't write!
good luck with everything in the future!! you are beautiful and seem so strong - honestly such an inspirational person. never give up trying to achieve you're goals - i really hope you achieve them! lots of love x

So great to hear from you guys! You're doing so well Sarah, such a fighter! You're right, being happy is what really matters. I had a tough time being happy after I got sick 2yrs ago with late stage lyme disease and had to drop out of school, but watching your video inspires me to keep on going.Keep smiling, you're an inspiration to everyone!<3
@slmercer08 Lyme disease can be horrible, we know someone affected by it - hope you are doing okay. Thank you for taking the time to send a comment about the video! X
You're doing so well Sarah! I can't believe how much your speech is improving. You have a brilliant attitude, you must be a joy to everyone you know. I'm glad you're happy :) I agree with Fergie, you look like Kaya Scodelario!
I hope the driving is going well, that the cooking is fun and that you can find something in biology that's perfect for you. I used to work in a lab and I bet you could find something interesting to do. Maybe as a lab tech in a private/NHS med lab? Good luck+keep smiling!
Hi ya! I'm a medical student from Brazil and I have to say that I'm really impressed with Sarah's improvement. I saw her first video some time ago just to understand what aphasia was, and it really touched me. I saw her second video and then this one and I feel very happy for her! I created my account just to say that! hahaha! I sincerely hope and I'm completely sure you're going to overcome all obstacles that may appear in your way! You're an example to be followed, Sarah. From Brazil, Luis =)
@luispaulovborges Hi Luis! Thank you for getting in touch and leaving a comment - it really means a lot to Sarah. Pretty cool to think people as far away as Brazil are watching the video!
@SymphUK Hey! I'm so glad you've answered!! just come here to thank you and to say that I am waiting for other videos showing how great Sarah is! Wish you the best! From Brazil, Luis =)
This is amazing, I'm so happy to see this update. In two short years you've progressed incredibly in your recovery. I remember watching the first video and using it as a learning tool in medical school and to see this latest update, just amazing.
@links0311 thanks for leaving a comment! It's good that you see an improvement, one of the reasons we did the videos was to show Sarah how much she is changing, if you live with aphasia it's hard to see gradual improvements. Good luck in med school!
Hello! I'm a brazilian medical student, and Sarah's case helped me a lot to understand the aphasia (thank you so much!) and the potencial such patients have to improve. At first I saw the first video, and then I jumped to the third and got amazed! What a great improvement! I got very happy! She seems to be a very nice and beautiful girl, and I can say I am proud for her! I wish you the best! Keep on trying to improve, and I'll be here rooting for you! Good bye!
I can see the difference between the first video and this! Keep on smiling! :)

That she does dressage is interesting! Dressage requires highly detailed, nuanced physical communication through the body. Interesting distinction between communication and language, or that language is a distinct cognitive process.

I only wish you the best with everything you do.

Folkmill 4 months ago
@Folkmill ...to continue: I ended up living back at home as an adult. And I really had to stand my ground and dig my heels in on some aspects of routine--so I'd retain the ability to get myself up in the morning!
I can see how that tendency for both generations to regress could feel so very impelling when re-learning key aspects of language--something from so early in life.
As such, you are (both) right to keep vigilant on it, but it's both more, and less, than prompting to watch out for.

@SymphUK Must be good to have money and the ability to go through treatment. If it was my parents and I had a stroke, they would just tell me to take some aspirin. Then if I had trouble speaking they would just tell me that I'm stupid and/or mentally handicapped.

He feels so alone and seems to be pushing his friends away.Karen
searchingmother 6 months ago
@searchingmother so sorry to hear about Coleton's illness and disability - hope he had a good birthday! Sarah is 21 this weekend, so it's a happy time despite the challenges she faces. I don't know where you live, but here in the UK, positive help has come from support groups like Headway and Connect and the support of speech therapists. Friendships can be one of the most difficult things to maintain after a brain injury and many people can become depressed it's worth getting him assessed.

You know I've sat here and tried to imagine what it would be like not to be able to express myself verbally or be able to read or write and I don't think I could imagine anything more frustrating.
