My first trip to Hawaii in 1984, this was still a private residence and my family actually got to stay the night in the house there. Now, it is a state park. Beautiful memories.
I have swum in that pond many times and never got an infection, never got sick. It's a beautiful spot and nice warm water. When the ocean breaks into it it cools down some, really nice place!
I also swim regularly there for years and have never gotten sick or attacked by eels. Germs are everywhere all the time so relax and enjoy it..if The Hot Pond will be the death of me so be it, I love it that much!
A male died who swam there. They found a bacteria in his body that's only found in that pond.
Its a piss-hole. When it was private it was clean/safe (up until the late 80's).
People/kids piss in it, its warm, sometimes really warm so all the little bit(s) left that people didn't get when they wiped, with all the piss, it add's up when you consider 100 people or more swim there in a day somtimes.
99.9% of the populated Hawaii shorelines are polluted w/fecal bacteria, its sad.

I get irritated when people call it "hot pond"
it is warm pond.
If it was hot it would be better overall and have LESS bacteria.
PS normal soap is not usually enuf for this warm pond scum.

If you never use soap you are going to get a staph infection. I swim in that pond nearly everyday for 6 years and have never been sick.
