The shell game PAYS 1 to 1 odds but the real odds of winning are 1:2

In other words the probability of winning is 1/3 so the break even payoff would have to be $2 for each $1 bet, plus your original dollar back.

The shell game operator does not have to cheat; he only has to move the shells around so the people cannot follow them. The 3 card monte game is the same concept. Of course, all casino games favor the house, but not by so much.

@RoscoesRiffs I am ashamed to say I went to an Ivy League college and got a Ph.D. from another "prestige" university. I finally saw the light and have been a salesman ever since. Gambling is a "tax on stupidity" because the smarter you are the less you pay. My grandfather was a bridge hustler. Nobody thought Fred and his partner Clyde could take smart businessmen...but they sure did. Even in his late 70s Fred could tell you where all the cards were but make you think he was a dumb redneck
