if hip-hop is so amazing and lifechanging then why do they enphisize f***ing hoes, getting rich, doing drungs, getting crunk, shooting eachother, etc. how come the people who listen to it, arent generally "the cream of the crop" get in trouble and blames whites and the gov't for thier problems.. i knew people who loved hip hop and rap, and guess wat, half of them are in jail, and the other half are into reckless immature behavior
For us people thousands of miles from Philly, or NYC, or LA, or any Hip Hop Hub, we suffer lack of experiencing hip hop. So all we can claim is whats on VH1, BET & local radio. Thanks to the internet we can atleast explore.
We can credit a lot of great things to hip hop culture, but SOMETHING has re-constructed hip hop on TV and RADIO into a commercial mockery. Which in a sense has been good because it created jobs and businesses, but certain MEDIA influences on culture are working against the people of hip hop.
Hip Hop and all of it's mixtape DJs, Radio DJ's, Rappers, Poets, Promoters, Break Dancers, Graffiti Artists, etc.... is now a mainstream international culture that was once articulate and moving on TV & RADIO, but now TV & RADIO just do the cookie cutter and moves nothing.....
Hip Hop is something you do. It's too much to put in a box. It's very amorphous (see "be like water").
It can shake you and break you, something that WE all need to. It's not BS. It's entertaining and thought-provoking. It's one thing for hip hop to be entertaining. It's another thing for hip hop to be informing. Right now the counterbalance is GONE. It needs to come back and not be lopsided as it is right now. 80s-90s hip hop was REAL BEAUTIFUL! People were MCs and had a MESSAGE.
im a big hip hop fan i can mold itself to anything, metal/rock classical anything but i must say it seems like tey could ruin it for themselfs now its, look what i have, look what im getting not i can do this take me for who i am - well some of it still is lol and i agree with ecko2k "Rap is mainstream, hip-hop will always be the culture." its just evolution though
To be honest, hip-hop being pimped. None of these mainstream rappers respect the art form for what it is; poetry, love, rebelliousness, power, heart, talent, soul, and good music. Look were's its going; pimp juices, crunk juices, apple bottom. Brothaz are gettin paid, damn creativity. They dont have to make great music, one dumb rap song can get you to the top. Rap is mainstream, hip-hop will always be the culture.
I agree, hip hop is a way of life, in its purest form its poetry and it inspires people to become great and do great things, respect for this video man this is the truth.
Your right Chris. The sad thing is that when rappers (such as myself) began to express a viewpoint that may be unpopular, we get attacked. That's probably why alot of today's hip hop is mindless. I refuse to rhyme about girls, jewels, money, and cars. So I guess I won't sell a million cds....but to hell with it. I gotta be true to me.
I used to rap about what was popular because I wanted to be popular. Now I rap about my life and the things that influence me. People tell me I'm whack and I should spit about some money I dont have, women I'm not gettin, and cars I'm not drivin.
There is a tight rope you walk as a hip-hop artist. Narrow-minded people "expect" you to rap about girls, jewels, money and cars. I take those topics and apply them to my life. If I aint got a girl, I guess my next song will be "I Aint Got A Girl".
You are a very intellectual young man, I'm happy that your spreading your wisdom to others.
I am also a dancer;I love all genre of music, sadly you are correct Hip-Hop has been modified,i.e dance songs, idolizing rims, video girls etc...
Thanks for the video ! Hopefully that question gets meditated on or something because I would love to hear more of your thoughts in regards to Hip-Hop.
I might just post this as a bulletin on myspace...this video can really enlighten. People desperately need to know that hip hop is so much more than iced grills, rims, hoes, etc...basically, there's so much more than what the media puts out there.
The essence of hip hop will never die...as long as cats like you stay spreading the realness...
