From the start of the Ossia up to the 3rd start of the main theme...5:03.... is on of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written. Those russians sure know melody.
Yikes, This is so hard, I cannot even pretend to play it, and I play the piano pretty well. This song is proof that there is a God. I don't see any other way that something so beautiful and hard could exist.
@pfewell its because the human mind is wonderful, not because there is a god, god doesnt exist, but Yefim Bronfman , he exist!, there is your proof, nothing else!
@vshagoyan happens in every piece of this kind, i wonder if people actually think it ended in first video... and i mean, in every single video of this kind happens... in chopin's 4th ballade by zimerman is very funny.
@MrRaphaelBM i don't see wht is so god awful about mistakes, its part of humanity, now don't get pissy, even though getting pissy is very human to as well.
What I love about his cadenza is that you always think that it couldn’t possibly get any more intense, but it does – and he does it without making it that much louder. Breathtaking. Wonderful.
1:34 to about 2:20 is breathtaking. Did Rachmaninoff write that or is it someone else's cadenza? Must confess not to be an expert myself so i have no idea. I just love the "improvisation" on the melody at the start.
@Isaacooper28 Yes, Rachmaninoff wrote the cadenza. He actually wrote two - the first being the one played here, though it is often referred to as the Ossia because it is played less often, and the second being the quicker, more Toccata-like version that Horowitz and Rachmaninoff used in their recordings.
I love the way Bronfman plays Rach. 2&3. True Russian soul "gargitza." He was friends with Gilels . Apparently lived near each others famalies and was a great admirer.
If you can find the Beethoven cello sonotas by Ricther/Rostropovich cherish them as they are gems.
I so much more enjoy his playing than Volodos (too much on technique not enough soul.)
@dutchmusicfan Well, there's a DVD of this exact performance, but if you want a CD, there's one with Bronfman doing Rachmaninoff Piano Concertos 2 and 3 with Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Philharmonia Orchestra. It's not the same conductor and orchestra, but they're still great recordings. :) They're here on YouTube if you're curious.
he plays this cadenza so well...i can never decide which cadenza i prefer - perhaps this one, although some of the greatest pianists have ironically used the shorter one! not everyone can bring this ossia cadenza off, but bronfmann really nailed it!
i am working while listening to this piece. i don't quite understand how i feel. its so beautiful. i can't remember the last time music moved me so much (oh, a few years ago with amelie soundtrack)... i could not seem to concentrate on my database, but at the same time it makes my senses complete... i'm going crazy...
you are, just like thousands of other listeners, a victim of this pure rachmaninoff music. theres probably no human being not being touched by that kind of music.
it is actually "easier" to play without the printed score to read -to much physically happening at the keyboard itself to be bothered with the printed music to refer --- -after MUCH practice the score is memorized and "printed" in the mine of the performer----finger and muscle memory is not enough-you must be a true musician and know your music
so beautiful... intensity and passion just flowing from his fingers...think about the neurons in his brain firing that fast to make such exquisite music

This is the only version of the ossia cadenza that I like. Others play it in a very restrained way.

all of it is absolutely brilliant, but for me, part at 1:55 just makes me proud of living in the same world as Rachmaninoff lived

Anyone else also think that the normal cadenza, although not as difficult, is much more beautiful?

And to bronfman himself? Personally I find his old version better, it is also in better sound quality

Love Bronfman's ossia cadenza, though I think he did a better job of it when he recorded this piece with Salonen and The Philharmonia back in 1992.

661cyclist 2 years ago 4
Yeah, the ossia is better than the other score, he is amazing
voca040 2 years ago
@661cyclist I believe Argerich would now choose the ossia cadenza if she were to play this concerto ever again (not in a million years :D)
I think combining this cadenza w/Argerich's performance would make the best version out there.
