Wow, 1876 against...fantastic result! I think that Anne Widdecombe's indignation and arrogance was largely responsible for the incredible shift of opinion.
@bilsim Anyone catholic with any degree of intelligence would have stayed away from that debate like the devil shuns holy water. Why engage in a debate to which you cannot bring one single argument?
@bilsim I think that the words 'intelligent catholic' are in themselves a contradiction. Most of the catholics I know (especially those approaching the end of their lives) completely avoid discussing anything which involves a challenge to their faith because they know it is an argument which they are simply not equipped to win and are terrified to consider the reality. They bury their heads in the sand because the foundations of their beliefs are so fragile and weak.
Nothing has mad me madder this week than seeing Anne widdicombe's consistient and condescending refusal to admit the issue as raised by Fry /Hitchen's. It makes me sick to think that a woman with this kind of attitude could be a serving MoP. How uncharitable. How unkind. How unthinking. How stupid and how, how arrogant.
Very interesting. Find it a shame they gave the arch bishop the first and last words though. He got first words, Stephen should have gotten the last word.
hahaha, a triumph of reason. too bad those two won't reflect upon their loss to any greater extent than condemning the audience as hopeless sinners....
The Catholics fielded their D team against the atheist A team.
Come to think of it... who is their A team.... Hmmmm...

It's a shame that the Catholic side didn't have anyone with any degree of intelligence.
