How is gold, diamonds, and silver valuable in an economy where the currency has no value? In a barter economy, why would I want gold or silver? I cannot eat it, I cannot saw a board in two with it, it will not fuel my car or tractor, I cannot grow vegetable when I plant it in the ground. Gold, like fiat currency, has only perceived value, since there is no utilitarian value in them, at all.

Gold is the only metal that cannot rust and it is more ductile and maleable (meaning it can be made to any shape and re-used again and again). Gold is precious in nature and it is not found in abundance, unlike iron or copper and etc. If you have gold, people are ready to pay a price to you, you can trade gold for fuel, vegetable and other stuffs that you need. So in that way Gold has value

What I am say is, that in a total economic collapse scenario, gold has no more value than a bag of potatoes, etc. The very fact that you can trade gold for potatoes tells you that their value is perceived as equal. If you can buy and store seeds, canning equipment, etc, do it with your dollars first, then buy gold as a hedge. You cannot eat gold, and ultimately need to buy or grow food.
