@rupchurc : take the limiter off the master channel. Make sure your mix doesn't go over -4 to -3 db (labels won't accept anything higher than that. (They even prefer -6db). Send it out to some labels and if it's good enough to get signed, they will get a mastering engineer to master the track for you. Then you will have that commercial sounding loudness and just general commercial sound to your track
i glanced at the title and thought it said mixing and masturbating btw how much is this program i wanna start making dubstep and shit like that without using free, crappy programs
hi, I'm a noob...lol. so by putting each instrument on a track, you can use different effects on them...and do you recommend putting each instrument on a track?
At 18:30, can't you just run a compressor on the master track with the ceiling at -3 db so you don't have to reset the track volume for all the tracks?
thanks....this video really helped me out alot because i use fl studio too and i couldnt figure out the right way to do all that....u should make more videos like this !!!! and if u have time check out some of my stuff on youtube @spookyfbaby1
Great video man, really informative, I can't wait to use these techniques. I've never used the Parametric EQ2 yet and this really makes me excited to try it out!
nice lecture tyler.. i listened all tru..but had problem with your demo beat.. it shoulda been better than this... something sweeter :) but i learnt alot..... Oxygenjay (Nigeria)
My tip for you is instead of using 2 parametric EQs, Press the for example EQ button 1 and change it to Highpass filter then you cut off the lowend to 100%
I find that, making sure while everything is playing, it hits -3db to create some headroom (before mastering). Making it go past that mark is considered "hot" and usually creates unwanted artifacts in your final sound, and also makes the tune sound "smashed". Using a maximizer and other bits (during mastering) will fill the headroom to 0db, not kill the dynamics of the tune, and it will sound full and clear. Also rolling off below 30hz and above 18khz - 20khz to make more room during mixdown.
this video is helpful i was wondering if u could subscribe cause i wanted to start making some tracks and ur crticism and tips would be helpful so thx
I listened!!!! :D I appreciate this...i wanted to record a song for my gf...and knowing nothing, i decided to try all this stuff on my own. But i wanted it to sound as good as possible...this'll definitely help.
I like to mix without a limiter on the master track, because when you get levels with the limiter active, turning one thing down will cause everything else to turn up.
I wish I knew what like all the levels db, hz and all that so it can sound clear and nice. You should make a video talking about all that like the basics of a kick where it should be around in the levels etc. if there already isnt a video like that >.<
Thx man ... very helpful vid.. i hope it will bring me to a higher mastering level , but i do Metalmusik with a Vst plug in called ezdrummer - drumkit from hell. there you got a seperated mixer in it ... anyway can i eQ this again in the mixer ?? also got probs with my line in signal from my git and bassguitar .. i ve tryed to manage the levels using th db meter .. but the loudness seems to switch everytime i select a diffrent channel .. ? got an idea what i mean . ? thanks again
Thanks so much been playing records since 97. SO I have a pretty good ear but this helped so much with using the interface to get the desired sound I was looking for thanks again

@giroyagetme Software like that just sucks. If you work hard enough you can get your mix to sound better by itself than doing a mediocre mix and relying on software to do the rest of the work. Not trying to be a dick but yeah. Just saying
Hey, Maximus isn't a cheap, mediocre tool like that guy said lol. I know a lot of guys that use it and can use it well. I know the basics of it and if you EQ, mix, and have your track set right then Maximus can be an amazing tool to bring the track to it's full potential. Though, the guy is right on his own too. If you do a great mix it can sound just as good (if not better) than what maximus could add in some cases.
@giroyagetme I just can't get my mixes to sound any better with software like that. It makes them sound worse no no matter what I do so I just keep it simple with a few special eq's
Nice vid i´ve been making music for years and could never mix it to the highest quality but you have taught me a few things its neva to late ti learn thank you
@TylerClarkOfficial This is the most amazing video on youtube. Home studio producers, myself included, are now, more than ever, taking on the complete role of production from beatmaking to mixing and mastering. I've never found such a detailed explanation of the EQ2, adjusting levels, etc. I personally kinda wing it since I run a home studio operation, so I adjust panning and volume levels but never this in depth. Thank you so much for the tips and trick. Maybe a mastering version of this?
Good to hear! Glad I could help :). I may do one on mastering in the future... not sure though. I'll have to find a way to master using something everyone has in FL Studio.
The contest is over, I didn't win lol. I started promoting way too late. I came in like 30 something out of around 1000 other producers so I'm pleased about that!
That's so good that you got your tracks on beatport! I'm trying to get into producing but there is so much to learn. I made a few tracks, 2 on my channel. If you read this, do you have any tips for producing and finding the right sound or the best vst for progressive/dubstep? Love your work

lol, sausage fatner.... =) great vid. 1 question; when your mixing a track, do u use a compressor on the master channel? if so, what atk/rls threshold/ratio settings do u use?
I use all sort of tricks like that. But usually I put nothing on the master other than a Limiter. Which is a compressor but at like a 1:1 ratio maybe? I might be wrong but a limiter acts like a brick wall, slamming all the sound in to it and does not let anything past the point of your set celining (or threshold). I know a lot of people use a multiband compressor on the master but I have no clue how to set honestly lol.
Cool video. I have found that it is much easier to get a good mix by bringing all the faders down and then bringing them all up one by one in order of harmonic importance (ie. kick first, then bass, then next most powerful element, etc.) until you get the perfect mix.
listened to the whole thing and got to say are styles of mastering are not to far off. I use Izotope Ozone 3 and Izotope Alloy to master now adays but in the end it still comes down to the leveling on my limiter and I try to get my volume and depth to sound at the exact level true mastered tracks sound at cirten volume increments on my 5.1 sourround I mix on :)
@adri50q For sure! Any type of sutdio headphone whether it be lower end like those Behringers or higher end like Seinhiser (or however you spell it). Here's my theory on monitors and headphones: I believe there is a point where they all sort of plateu. By that I mean there is a big difference in between a $100 pair of monitors and a $500 pair of monitors, BUT between the $500 and the $1000 there isn't much difference. Honestly, I will never have anything super high end unless it's given to me.
