it's because most people, when carrying the "one" from adding 40+30+20+10 they instinctively want to add it to the thousandths spot instead of the hundredths. doing in our heads, we start to think 40+30+20+10=1000 instead of 100. try it again and you'll see what i mean. it's the old 'where to carry the 1' goof.
