It has been almost a year now since this ludicrous 'public works protection act' came to the public's attention. Though there was a great deal of outcry at the time, as always seems to be the way with these things, it has fallen by the wayside and people have seemingly forgotten all about it. When I was part of the protest they somehow knew I had a gas mask in my backpack (so they were using x-rays or something to scan through everyones clothes). I had it just encase they decided to use tear gas on peaceful protesters. They took my backpack, searched it, and took away my gas mask and told me I was in possession of an offensive weapon, even though a gas mask is purely defensive. When I asked them if it was illegal they told me "right now, it is."

Of course it is a complete coincidence that the increase of police presence and the increase of excessive force they use in the U.S. and Canada really ramped up right after one of the biggest financial disasters of all time, and the only people truly being affected by it are the younger and poorer people that tend to be involved in protesting and resistance groups. The U.S. is an empire that will meet the same fate as the Roman's and British very soon.

I hate to say that I am not surprised that they dug this out and are trying to use it to increase the police powers and reduce our rights. The first and fourth amendments are both a joke in the US now and the police/border patrol have taken more and liberties and denied more and more freedoms to the citizens all in the name of "public safety", which is just a huge smokescreen. The war on terror is really just an excuse. "Papers please" is not far off.

As I watched the Black Block destroy police cars and vandalize buildings on Yonge Street, I realized how thin the partition is between peaceful assembly and anarchy. However, as I watched the police actions against innocent citizens at Queen and Spadina late Sunday afternoon in the pouring rain, I also realized the thin line that separates us from unbridled totalariansim.

This outdated act was GROSSLY stretched and misinterpreted, without permission or even AWARENESS of the citizens, to allow all kinds of horrible behaviour to occur this weekend in Toronto. I saw cops search people without cause, demand ID without cause, arrest without cause, and beat the crap out of people without cause. The protesters had no idea this law existed, let alone was being sneakily used against them. My line in the sand has been crossed, I don't know about the rest of you Canadians!!

I believe the amount of footage obtained of the absolute tyranny being imposed (and it's quite extensive, as much of it is yet to be uploaded because some of the protesters just got home from being in jail!), along with parts of this interview, would make an incredibly strong statement.

The PWPA needs to have its limits set to all those provisions listed, no question.
However, I disagree about the G20 area not falling into the category of public work. The G20 area is a place where important business gets taken care of, just like courthouses. Also, the protesters are not the targets of this act. The intended targets are people who want to disrupt the proceedings.

When I was part of the protest they somehow knew I had a gas mask in my backpack (so they were using x-rays or something to scan through everyones clothes). I had it just encase they decided to use tear gas on peaceful protesters. They took my backpack, searched it, and took away my gas mask and told me I was in possession of an offensive weapon, even though a gas mask is purely defensive. When I asked them if it was illegal they told me "right now, it is."
