I like the Marvin version best, then this version. I don't give a diddly squat who sang it first. Didn't care that much for Gladys' version. But then again-didn't care that much about Gladys anyway.
this song is another one that we drank and sang to down in Zeilinski's basement on Friday nights when his parents were out bowling. We'd get all liquered up and then head out to find some mischeif.
Of course 'heard it through the grapevine' is best known to us as the Motown song, recorded by Gladys Knight & the Pips in 1967 and by Marvin Gaye in 1968.
Of course 'heard it through the grapevine' is best known to us as the Motown song, recorded by Gladys Knight & the Pips in 1967 and by Marvin Gaye in 1968.
BTW, Fogerty has stated that his solo was influenced by the great Steve Cropper of Booker T & the MGs. Cropper played a Telecaster which makes him alright in my book. Wait a minute, I play a Telecaster. Could I be a little biased? Nah.
As chezsunset said, Strong wrote it based on a personal experience & Whitfield did all the various arrangements. Smokey Robinson recorded it 1st, then Marvin (or rumor says Isley Brothers, but no song has surfaced), but neither version was initially released. Next came Gladys Knight, who's version was released & hit #1 on the R & B chart. Marvin's version is the most famous b/c it crossed over onto the top 40 pop charts, but it doesn't belong to him anymore than to anyone else who recorded it.
It was written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong and recorded by a number of different Motown artists with Marvin's being the 3rd or 4th version and by far the most famous.
When CCR covered it, Fogerty added a FANTASTIC guitar solo!! Search for the long version [10+ minutes]...it is on youtube.
Written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong in 1966, the single was first recorded by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles

be quiet boy, if you really liked this song and band, the quality doesn't matter, the music does. sit down, stay seated, and enjoy the song.
