I do like your sense of humour. I'm saying; Earth is very special not because life cannot exist elsewhere, but because WE cannot exist elsewhere. But all we need is, as you've pointed out, a meteor falling on us and everything changes. I'm not afraid of that eventuality, though this is a very real danger. @BobbyRossRacing93 If you did your studying on 2012, you would now that we would need to leave the solar system (2012 is when the sun is supposedly suppose to go through a sun cycle which will cause to shrink and inflate at rapid paces either disentigrating us or freezing us to death). Sadly though at where were at right now, it would take 120 yrs or more to leave the solar system... so if 2012 really does come true (i'm not really a supporter) were all screwed.

@jclu5293 Hi-- I would suggest doing your undergrad work at a university that has a physics/astronomy dept that offers research or coursework in instrumentation or optics-- and that may coop with their engineering dept. Then do grad work at a university that has funding or resources from NASA for building these instruments. Google is your friend in researching what universities offer these programs. Good luck!

This means all kinds of private companies (most notably telecommunications) and government organizations (such as the national weather service) benefit from this kind of research and observation (these all benefit economies). And I'm only pointing out the obvious. Solar activity has also played a role in knocking out power grids (which has an even larger impact on economies).

@darinka7701 Well, that's a bit of the anthropic principle at work -- if the Earth wasn't protected by a geomagnetic field, and we still existed, we would have adapted to tolerate solar radiation. Therefore, we wouldn't consider CMEs a "danger" any more than you consider molecular oxygen or 1G gravity "dangerous".

@darinka7701 We already know life CAN exist under extreme radiation conditions. Deinococcus bacteria, for example. Without our magnetic field it couldn't be "life as we know it", but that's the whole point of the anthropic principal; from the perspective of, say, a hypothetical silicon-based creature native to the moon, we live in a caustic sea of solvents, at such high temperatures that water would vaporize if it wasn't under such crushing pressure.

It's all relative.

Which is pretty much the exact opposite of my point; it's not that Earth is particularly hospitable for life, but that life here is perfectly developed for this environment. Earth has a magnetic field, so we are not hardened against ionizing radiation. We're unharmed by the dangers of the cosmos because those "dangers" are simply environments different from our own. Until a meteor hits us. Doh!
