  • I am an Electrical Engineer, and I can tell you that this is propaganda. My suggestion is to go to the House Ear Institute CI simulations. Just google,

    CI simulation site:hei.org

and they will pop right up

  • That perception of sound will be different for CI users is clear, though it depends on the implant how much and what they will hear. What kind of simulation is being used in this video? How many 'channels' of stimulation are used?

  • it's a bit sad that this video comes up first when you type in "cochlear implant simulation" into youtube, it seems like it is complete bullshit

  • Comment removed

  • IAll music sounds like heavy metal \m/

  • Sounds like some kinda demonic presence...kinda creepy

  • I find it hard to believe this video, my father got a CI ten years ago, it has improved his life and ours, he recognises songs we play on cd in the car, his favouirite is the sweeney todd soundtrack. He rtecognuises his name and ours, when his back is turned he can almost make out what we are shouting to him (haha)..how is that even possible if the examples you have given are supposte to be true..?? dislike video.

  • lol i could understand it

  • this is not true this is probably only 1 channel if this is what it sounded like my best friend wouldnt have perfect speech.

  • I am a speech path. student and this is an inaccurate simulation of a CI. High levels of speech understanding can be obtained with 5-8 independent channels of stimulation. CI's can have 24 channels of stimulation. It is speech as a modality of communication that is important. Although music is not as clear as speech, it is much better than this video suggests. The music in this clip is maybe 1 channel of stimulation. Not an accurate representation of a cochlear implant. Likely propaganda.

  • PURE PROPAGANDA!!!!!!!!!

Whomever posted this should be ashamed!

  • if this was true, my daughter would sound distorted in her speech. Simply NOT true!

  • accept your child, i wish my parents would have learned sign for me and now my deaf daughter. the truth is out there. find a deaf person to tell you.

  • The info in this video is absolute rubbish, my son has a cochlear implant and it has been like a miracle in his life, he is an A student (even studying honours French) in mainstream school and has almost perfect speech & fantastic hearing, all thanks to his cochlear implant - Without his C.I. he wouldn't even know what his name sounds like. Do not let this video sway your decision against C.I.s they are fantastic and they work.

  • What did they do.... hold the mike up to a running dryer or something? Please... there's no credibility here what-so-ever.

  • I just want to say this, My mother at age 45 started to loose her hearing, she is now 52, and her hearing aids really do very little for her in day to day communication. I feel like this video was put together as a bias, and irresponsible representation of a product. I really feel like more research should have been done before putting this video out, to show both pros and cons..Some one who has heard, and now hears nothing, will appreciate being able to hear anything again.

  • This IS somewhat true, actually. With CIs with more channels, sound is a bit more clear than this, but this is the basic idea. People with CIs learn to distinguish these sounds and can learn to speak and understand speech when being spoken to. They can listen to music, and though it won't sound the same as it does to a hearing person, they can still enjoy it and distinguish between instruments and voices. So this video is party correct, and partly a bit ignorant.

  • as a speech and hearing sciences student at the university of washington, i'm appalled by this video...while it is true that ci users will probably never be able to fully appreciate music, ci's have done amazing things for speech recognition. this video's portrayal of hearing with a CI is simply NOT TRUE...if you are considering a CI for you or a loved one, do not use this video to help you make the decision!!

  • @hippotoothpik

Thank you for your voice of reason in an otherwise sea of negativity.

  • This video is not true! I am CI implated, I can hear and speak well! I can understand and feel this beautiful world. Thanks CI!

  • I came to watch this video, so I know what to expect for my operation tomorrow. I hope this is not true...because I was told it would be better than my hearing aids. I have sesorynural hearing loss X2. All this video did was scare me more

  • This just isn't true. My daughter has had her CI for only 3 months and she can UNDERSTAND, not just hear.

  • My brother has bilater Cis and understands and speaks normally--- I do not understand this video at ALL

  • I have a cochlear implant and I can hear all these sounds. I can hear the original sound and i can tell the difference between the original sounds and the "Cochlear Implant" sounds. I am unsure what this video is trying to prove.

  • the distorted sounds sound different from the clear sounds becuz if ur able to hear the clear sounds very clear then your a happy camper lolz, my boyfriend is deaf and i dont know if he really hears like me =(

  • I agree too as the mom of a child with a CI- Advanced Bionics has come out with upgrades and IS continuing to be in the front with new research and upcoming upgrades. This is just a video made to scare people into not being comfortable with their decision regarding CI-each person's decision is his/her own; don't knock it because YOu may think differently about it.

  • This video had scared me and My CI operation is tomorrow

  • I think eveyone here is completely in agreement, this video doesnt really kmake any point what-so-ever. Expecting an artificial component to pick out the subtle nuances of melody is absurd, the idea is to help people with speech mainly, it baffles me that someone (presumably with hearing) would comment unfavourably on this technology

  • This information is not correct and in fact, doesn't give credit to the true miracle of the Cochlear Implant. My son wears an implant and can perfectly repeat back words to a song, comment on and detect soft sounds, and speaks normally. If he didn't hear normally (like described in your video) he wouldn't be able to SPEAK normally. Each to their own, but bad information is just not appropriate to distribute to the world.

  • Is that true? Because back in the early 90's, my best friend's brother was born deaf and wore a Cochlear Implant, but his speech was the "stereotypical deaf person's" type inunciations, along with sign language.

Perhaps the AMAZINGLY HUGE leaps in CPU tech. since then has greatly increased the CI's ability? As, aside from him being born deaf, I'd assumed with the CI "Greg" would have been able to repeat what he "heard" if it was clear and audible.

I've always wondered what it sounds like.

  • I, too, would like to point out that this video (almost totally void of any sort of factual information) is not at all relevant to today's CI technology. It sounds like this is a simulation of 8 or 16 channels- not the 120 possible if you ask for it. If you're researching whether to give an implant to your child, I implore you to give little credence to this as a resource, as it wholly misrepresents what hearing with a CI is like with today's technology.

  • Too bad the Cochlear company who makes the Nucleus devices is so corrupt. The government found cause to intervene in a whistleblower complaint by their CFO and will fine them for bribing doctors in order to control referral patterns and keep prices so high that thousands of qualified candidates cannot get the implant!

  • You are totally right on what you can hear as a hearing person listening to an CI. Where you are wrong is that the person wearing the CI can hear what you hear, our (and mine!) have adapted to the CI and its noises. The noise that we hear now is 'normal' and as intened. I accept that we CI wearers will all have differnt level of hearing, but then we are deaf and all started from diffrent level of losses in the first place.

Go and get your facts right first!

  • My son was born profoundly deaf. He started wearing hearing aids at 13 weeks and was implanted at 1 year and then again on the other side at almost 4 years. This information is misrepresented and out of date. The clarity of the CI is based on the number of channels utilized by the CI. Old CIs were assumed to sound as presented in this video. However, CIs implanted in the last decade sound completely different. con't

  • con't == And in fact, Advanced Bionics released a new one the HiRes 120 two years ago which utilizes 120 channels (more complicated to explain but more or less). A person needs at least 100 channels to truly enjoy music. My son's CI was reprogrammed with this software and noticed an amazing difference. He could distinguish between my voice and his dad's!!! con't

  • Con't 3 == Also he began enjoying music more. Currently, he sings in the church choir and the choir director says there is no timbre/pitch problems with his voice. This past fall he started violin lessons and even received a scholarship to receive advanced lessons based on his talent at recognizing and playing patterns and pitches. He can sing a note on key with the instructor!!!! Please educate yourself before you educated parents!

  • i so wish parents of deaf children could see this video before they agree to a cochlear as so many are given a very unrealistic scenario of what could be ..the reality is very often not what they were promised. deb

  • chris987123 a cochlear implant turns out diffrent for everyone some people will get good hearing some people wont get as good but will get some hearing am deaf a cochlear implant wont work for me so am haveing a brainstem implant soon

  • Hozz, bilateral implants are hearing aids.. you have hearing.... without em..

cochlear impants make your hearing completly artifal

  • syralja..i agree 100000000000000 percent..i am younger, but i no about this. my cousin..he was not born deaf but is profoundly deaf...at 17 months 2 b exact..we rnt quite sure y...was it ecause of wen he was born, could breathe, or the green goo leakage from his ears later as a baby... either way..his mother is soo blessed with him. she says not only is she happy 2 b his mother...but extatic to hear him say " i love you mommy"

  • Hi Joey. Your girlfriend should get back to her audiologist for mappings. There must be a problem of some sort that is fixable.

Hi jayaymeye. I take it you don't have an implant as you would not have gone to the trouble to post uninformed crap. I have one and music is perfect as is the 98% of sounds I hear.

  • how in the hell does anyone know how ci sounds except for the person wearing it. If the person can speak and distinguish different sounds, then it must be working. Retard!!!!!

  • Actually, if you look at the Davis Google Scholar article, you'll see that it's possible to figure out mathematically what the capabilities/limitations of the CI are and then to extrapolate from there. Perhaps these are not representative of the most updated technology, but from what I understand, music through CIs is really not discernible...

  • hi.. my girlfriend (26 years old) had her CI when she was 17 years old. She can recognize noise, but can not recognize if it is a car, person talking, etc. Does it has to do with the fact that she didnt get the CI at a

  • younger age? She says it has to do with memory of sound, but if it was true she still could enjoy the sound of music.. which she doesnt. the funny thing is that she really knows how to dance!! :o) well.. ill be glad if someone can explain me a little bit of this.. I really hope she doesnt hear as showned on this video...

    joey

  • what a load of bullshit!!!!! The only real thing on this video is the picture of a flower at the end. DO NOT believe what this video states. I have bilateral implants and can hear just like a 'normal' person

  • This is poisonous propaganda and should be removed from YouTube. Totally irresponsible. I have Cochlear implants in both ears and the sounds are the same as before I went deaf. So, I'm sorry for the sicko who served this rubbish up so as to send out the wrong message. I would agree that there might be a small percentage, emphasis on "small", of the recipients who do not get 100% benefit from the implant but to generally classify implants this way is not correct.

  • I have a CI ( nucleus freedom in my left ear )Just listened to the debussy piano music at the start - sounds excellent with all key notes played .......bah humbug

  • Also I don't know how big of a difference it makes that she could hear before, but I know it's a million times clearer than what they show here

  • This is interesting..but I have a friend who became deaf from an inflammatory disease at the age of 9 and I think around the age of 14 she got her CI. She is now 26, can speak normal, hears music, words not as much and can hear most things. I think her case is different because she could hear at one time. She also for those 5 years she was deaf learned ASL(American Sign Language) and continues to use it to this day with her friends. She calls herself Hard of hearing.

  • I think that this is a sad example of disinformation. This is NOT how a deaf listen using a cochlear implant. My wife uses TWO IC and she listen very very very clean than this noise. Indeed, she notice that the first piano is clean, the second is only noise.

  • We signed before he was implanted and for a couple of months post-implant, and now only during non ci times like bathtime and bedtime. We chose to start out signing because he needed language, in whatever form it takes. He signs a few things now (maybe 3-4 words), but is really a talker.

  • He does have 2 CI's. He received the first one at his first birthday, and his second a month ago. It is impossible to know exactly what one person hears or sees or feels in relation to what another person experiences, but I know that my son enjoys music. So, however any person may truly experience CI's, I don't know. I just know how they've enriched his life. Thanks for the nice tone. Its so rare when people talk about this issue.

  • That's good that you feel he benefits from them. Does he sign as well as speak? I understand there are significant impacts on cognitive development when using ASL along with the implants. Was this something that you learned, too?

  • Hi Syralja,

Curious to know if your son has implants and your thoughts on the efficacy of implant sound simulation that this video demonstrates, especially with music. I know it made me think hard about the benefits of CIs.

  • What do I call success? Well, when my 18-month-old son recognizes his name, calls me Mama, calls his father Daddy, and calls his siter by her name. When he asks for water, claps and dances when I turn on the radio, asks for his truck or choo choo with words. When he plays with kids at his Head Start and does all the same things they do. I think that's success.
