Watching this brings me near to tears. I quit counting after my 54th Beat Farmers show. I've seen the best of the best live, but somehow they all pale in concert compared to these guys. The most fun I've ever had with my clothes on. San Diego music has sucked since their demise.
I'm going to catch BOTH Joey Harris' band and Jerry Raney's band...TONIGHT!
Joey...in Spring Valley(playing Ridin')...Jerry... in El Cajon(playing the Riverside medley)...first Jerry at the Downtown Cafe...then cross over to the Spring Valley Inn!
This is not at the CMA Awards. The CMA Awards have been at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville since the mid 70's -- this isn't it. The description notes that this is Washington D.C. Also the crowd is very sparse for the CMA Awards --- or even for the VMAs (which were in Los Angeles) as dlvrymon suggested.
This is a great performance, though. Better quality than most of live recordings out there. I wish I could get a higher quality source for these songs to put on my mp3 player.
That was Martha Quinn introducing them. This was most likely the CMJ (College Music Journal) Awards - not the CMA (Country Music Association) Awards. The Beat Farmers would not have been invited to the CMAs but they would have been at the CMJ awards
.
Great video - thanks for posting it. The Beat Farmers rocked back in the day. I wish I could have seen them live but alas I was stuck in Indiana. I loved playing them on my college radio show though.
@stockscout79 Thanks for clearin that up! I was like what the hell!? LOL! I doubt they were ever invited to teh CMA's & I didn't think the CMA's were ever held in D.C.
Is this guy singin Country Dick cuz it don't sound like him.
What a shitty sound man and this is the CMA.. Poor Joey and all that feed-back... Rollie laying it down heavy.. Greastest San Diego band of all-time FUCK Curb records
Thanks for posting all this. If it weren't for clips like this, no one would believe me when I told them that on a certain night, in a certain club, these guys were the best rock and roll band that ever lived. I was fortunate to see them up and down the West Coast in the 80's, as well as in London, England in 1985, just by chance. The Brits had no idea what to make of them.
I was working the show the night dick died, will never forget that night at the longhorn saloon.Great footage but someone please kill the monitor guy ,that feedback is hurting me !
Whistler, Canada. Ross, the trail hand, wrote afterward that a few measures before the end of Girl I Almost Married Dick straightened up like something stabbed in the back and then collapsed onto his kit when the song ended. As people crowded around him Jerry started noodling Burning Down the Woods to try to occupy the crowd. Dick tapped out about 10 beats in time with his foot on the high hat before they pulled him away. Classic. The Dude is seconds from death and he's still keeping time!
RIP COUNTRY DICK MONTANA AND "BUDDY BLUE" Cant believe these 2 guys are gone!!! Jerry, Joey, and Rolle please live longer. Long enough for me to get to San Diego and see ya guys.!!!
The problem is, this band was never as good without thee Buddy Blue, they still jammed hard though Those people dancing with name tags and ties on...hmmm. Jerry Raney looks like Gene Simmons of KISS and Joey Harris could be a member of some country outlaw band...I'm out. Bring back Buddy's sideburns!
Incredible. WHere do you find this stuf?? THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for posting. This sure brings back a lot of memories. The best band I have ever seen live!

Re-issue the entire Beat Farmers catalog, PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"Tales of the New West" and "Pursuit of Happiness" prices at Amazon are RIDICULOUS!!!! HIGHWAY ROBBERY!!
Why did Rhino only print 5000 when they re-issued "Tales of the New West"?

@stockscout79 I suspect you're correct. They where too cool for the Country Music Association.

Man, I saw these guys play some horrible dive, deep in the post-industrial wreckage of Oakland, this same year, 1988.
They played late. I flunked a molecular biology exam the next morning, because I was still shit-faced drunk by the time class started.
Never felt better in my life! Long live the Beat Farmers!
Best live band I ever saw.

I love Jerry's solo during "Ridin'".
This is one of the most underrated bands of all time.
"Riverside" is one of my favorites.
