@Gravesyte i don't really use adobe illustrator so i wouldn't know how hard/easy it is in photoshop but i highly recommend photoshop for linearting, it's pretty easy once you get used to it
So then we would lock the layer with the selected area still selected and then create the middle layer and set it on clipping mask. But that allows us to color solely on the selected areas so the skin? Or the areas not the skin? So basically after doing the layer underneath the sketch and coloring the skin tone in, what are we using the lasso tool to outline and how does it affect the clipping mask? PLEASE HELP!!! Lol
@Fallen56348 well, the clipping mask does that for us. when you clip a layer over the already sliced flat layer, you practically bind them together. so for as many layers you bind over that one, you can color on them and you cannot, at all, color outside of it, like the skin here. i made a layer over the cut skin layer then i colored on that new one and did not go out over the skin's edge lines. i wouldn't suggest using the lasso tool because that's not precise. (continuing in another reply)
@Fallen56348 what i suggest using for cutting edges for your flat layers like you see in this project, i would highly recommend the polygonal lasso tool, not the simple one. it's just a tad slower but far more precise i think, at least for me. it helps me a ton because you cut straight lines over the lineart and you avoid escaping any loose pixels around the lines otherwise you'd get a grungy edge to it, ya know? that for me is the best reason to avoid it. in time it gets faster using it, too.
@Fallen56348 next to the layer modes (next to Channels & Paths, above your regular layer), you have the option of locking the pixels inside or outside the already cut flats (ex. skin, hair, wtv) . if you choose the squared, small looking box where it says Lock: .. under layer modes, your cut flat will be easily colored without needing to add any new layers (if you prefer to only use one layer but i wouldn't recommend it until later on, you need to be able to Undo if you do any small mistakes)
Do you send the fill layer to the back? Because mine covers the entire picture? And when you say "start cutting around the body to trap the skin parts separately of the rest" do you mean cut around the skin pieces as though you only wanted to color that part (i.e. color in the face) or color around everything else but the skin?
@BlackMidnightFox you have to keep lines over the flat color layers.. this way you always know where lines are and you can cut on the color layers under it for smooth edges ^^
@QueenSnarfs in this case, lires (the one who created the lines) had them prepared on a layer (he had uploaded everything in a archive with the photoshop project file) and i just had to create color layers under the lines but that's what i usually do too.
@Derka33 you should totally try searching livestream, lots of good artists go there for live streaming and they talk while doing it. you don't have to pay anything either ;)
@Annyonweb xD thanks for the reply, but in the time since my comment ive given up on art via photoshop.
I could do it, though making the line art was killing me. I was always overcritical of what i was making and it drove me insane @_@. Thats why I was watching videos, trying to find out why it was taking me 20 + hours just to do 1/8 of what others could do.
Hello there! Great job rly, im just wondering if i may ask you.. when i draw in photoshop.. im never happy with how my lines come out, its not that they are not " smooth " in their movement,, its just that, the lines they get so " Pixly " however i do it.. how do u prevent this? i cant see any pixels in ur lines but when i draw mine thin they get rly pixly... is ur canvas huge or how do u do it? ^w^ thanks
@Konkyz Yep, i draw on at least 3000x3000px canvas, sometimes around 5000.. but lately, i was thinking it wasn't enough for the details so i'm thinking of making it a bit bigger ^^ unfortunately, people don't click the download button to see the details often but who cares, it's about improving and when it will be really good, i'm sure they will feel like they have to click it :) working on it ;)
@Laurenxorz it's easier now but in the beginning i had to use it to learn to keep inside the lines, i was at the very beginning when i colored this one.. plus, i am a very patient person and that helps too :)
@felleberre definitely keep them on separate layers, sketch on top. if you have a black and white that sketch you can choose the multiply layer and see through it below where the colors are.
i'm not quite sure i understand i dont know how to do the clipping you are referring to in the description also i dont get how to use the clipping mask thing...i just started photoshoping and the first few times i tried a couple of projects the coloring have been terrible as a shaky hand and lack of skill, help!
@NinjaKetsune okay, so.. you have a layer with the sketch on it.. you make a layer underneath it and you put in the color for a flat, let's say skin tone, you color all over with it. you get the lasso tool and you start cutting around the body to trap the skin parts separately of the rest. after you finish selecting the parts you need, you just lock the layer to not color by mistake on the rest where you had the skin cut separately. after that, you make a layer in between the sketch and the flat
@NinjaKetsune after you put the layer between the sketch and the flat skin tone layer, you right click that middle one and choose create clipping mask. then, you can color anywhere but it will be stuck to the skin tone flat layer so the color you put down on this new, third layer will only appear above the skin tone that you so perfectly cut. it's super helpful to do it ^^
@Annyonweb Sorry this is a continuation to my other post. Lol
^^ wasn't the very long and detailed description of any help? ^^ i think the part with the clipping mask is what you wish to know, i wrote it down exactly in there ^^
I just got into photoshoping myself. These videos are not only helpful, but inspirational. I used to hand my drawings to friends or my brother so they could color them. They are very unreliable. LOL. Better to learn yourself. I see you do more layers than i do
i usually do a layer for every part of the line-art like arms, head, hair, etc and the same for flat layers (the ones you cut to have more precission afterwards), and after that still have different layers for most of the color tones on top of those which is about 2-4 for each of the flats but now i'm starting to learn color blending more so i'm starting to color directly on the flats to blend them together easily otherwise it'd suck xD
You have a lot of patience XD the magnetic lasso too really gets on my nerves, so I just color it the old fashioned way, or use the pen too to make selections. Your videos are really usefull ^_^
Oh, and holy crap, you love learning new programs as much as me! :P
you're very welcome. yep, but i have patience merely in editing and drawing, nothing else. now that i have a tablet i use it for selections and it's twice as fast and far more exat.
you make the color layer under the one with the lines and then just color. every layer above will stay visible over the colors ^^ that and you select around the lines so you don't color extras around the object/character
search for line-arts on deviantart and check if the people who made them give others permission for coloring. i got this from lires(dot)deviantart(dot)com
Sorry for the redundant question. I actually know how to use the pen tool fairly well but I still feel like I suck at it. Guess I just need to use the pen more or make better line art.
He is using layers and is keeping the paint layer under the lines. He is also keeping the colors for each section on seperate layers.
What Is driving me crazy is how in the hell did he make such flawless and even lines. My line suck and I really need help with a better technique. : <
anyway, for such good lines you trace over the layer of sketch. yes the color layer was underneath the lines but you can also keep the layer of the colors over the lines if you use the multiply mode. i'm a girl ^_^ well, the lines can be done either on a new layer tracing over the sketch (if you have a lot of experience and steady hand) or you can use the pen tool which is wonderful and helpful if you don't have a very steady hand, like me.
Also, like i replied to the other comment, the color layers can stay on top if you set them on multiply mode ^_^
i colored it with just a mouse, yeah. the line-art was done from someone else. it was the first time using someone else's line-art (with permission) because i wanted to color something fast.
