55 years ago I lived in Stromness. My father was a lighthouse keeper on Copinsay he also played guitar in a dance band for a guy called Jim Robertson whose family I believe now make a sweet called Robertson's Orkney fudge. We were called Freeman and my father was English. Does anyone remember us. In retrospect the time reminded me in feel of the US tv series Northern Exposure as all local facilities were amalgamated like town hall/cinema/theatre and local talent was exposed.
@LanaInnit well I figured there are trees, what I really meant are there forests? Thats pretty cool that you live there. My great grandma grew up their and my grandpa grew up in caithness. They both died when I was young so I wasn't able to ever ask them questions.
But then every scott i speak to who does not come from the iland, says orcadians and shetlanders are yust as scotts and feel scottish and proud scotts.
Me personaly have always seen the northern ilands as brothers in blood.
Would be great with some local knowledge on the matter.
@Nortrix87 Orcadians and Shetlanders are just as much Scots as the mainland Scots of Scotland are, they have been Scottish from the very start of the history as Picts (early Scots), Shetland was invaded by Norse Vikings once but Scotland later gained it back, genetic research conducted over 12 years clearly prove that Shetlanders still carry their native Pictish Scottish genes by mass majority (65%).
@Calengela The local way of life reflects the joint Norse and Scottish heritage including the Up Helly Aa fire festival. What you speak of is pre history, scotland was formed long after the vikings colonised the pictish ilands.
After the islands were transferred to Scotland, thousands of Scots families emigrated to Shetland in the 16th and 17th centuries but studies of the genetic makeup of the islands' population indicate that Shetlanders are just under half Scandinavian in origin.
@Calengela Wel on Norwegian we say skott. If you are so interested in my second language skills.
If they are yust as much scotts as the mainland scotts then why is it always people outside these ilands trying to tell me this.
Example from english wiki:
"Although the annexation of the earldom by Scotland took place over five centuries ago in 1472, most Orcadians regard themselves as Orcadians first and Scots second."
The history s pretty much the same in Orcneys and Shetland.
Here is something from english wiki:
When an Orcadian speaks of "Scotland", they are talking about the land to the immediate south of the Pentland Firth. When an Orcadian speaks of "the mainland", they mean Mainland, Orkney.
So therefore i would like some lokals to speak to from these ilands and not irish or mainland scots telling about it. I think the ilands would be alot like Faroe iland if not 5 hole centuries under scotish rule.
I have a question to people from Orcney or Shetland:
Do you feel scottish?
Most i have spoken to say they feel more connected to the viking heritage of norway than scotland.
Biggest immigration from scotland was in the 17-18th century where tousands of scottish famelies moved to the northern ilands to mix out the culture and language.
The norse language norn was last spoken in the 18 century i have read.
Me as an Norwegian can read norn pretty easy actualy.
Thanks for posting these videos. I loved my short time in Orkney. Would love to go back and spend a lot more time there. So much history in one place is hard to take in.
If you ever get to Scotland do the all day trip to the Orkney Isles - you will see most of what's in this video AND get a trip to Highland Park, the furthest north distillery in the British Isles! (it's good malt too!)
Thanks I was lucky enough to visit on a recent holiday to the far north of Scotland ,caught the ferry from John O Groats and enjoyed a coach tour around the Islands.

@Theclaidheamhmor A few small ''forests'' but nothing big. Binscarth is like the biggest forest we have I think. Should come up and see for yourself.

@LanaInnit I will someday for sure.
