The real question is why are you picking on Swift. I could do this with any company near their terminals. Many times on a weekend or holiday they might have no room. Many times like swift a company grows so fast they outgrow their terminal. Truly I know many people do not understand things. Maybe you worked for them but I know for a fact that the saying "Once you have more than one person you have an organization. All organizations have problems."
at the columbus terminal theres a pilot a couple block away, i park there because theres no stores around the terminal to walk to for drinks and cigs, and everytime im at a terminal i run out of cigs. the only time you have to park at a terminal is if you have a high value load. other then that they dont require you to park there. they prefer you do. and if your leaving the gate you have to log it anyways, because you would be driving. and gps tells the company what we have done everyday.

THE QUALCOMM TRACKS ALL OF THAT SO THEY CAN'T CHEAT!! What a tool. There are a ton of companies using them, and DOT can see when you're moving, and when you're not with the Qualcomm, and even when you turn the key on, so it makes it impossible to "cheat" on their log books. I never had any real issues with Swift until my last DM. She wasn't very capable. With my first 2, they kept me going. My last 1 couldn't. I was loosing about $1500 a month with her. Westco usually only goes to LA and back, and they kept me running and I was home overnight 2-3 times a week.
Put in your time,(2yrs.) and look around. There are small companies that pay real well looking for good drivers. BTW, I get what your saying. I used DDL computer logs, excellent program.
Just in passing, I used to go to the truck stops because 1, I would get a meal, I would get a cleaner better shower, or, I just preferred the truck stops to some of the terminals. I drove for Swift for 2 years 4 months. I had a nice dedicated route usually up to Hamilton MT. and back. Then I went to work for Westco (both in Denver) and was making about 1200+ a week driving to LA and back. Better pay and working environment, smaller company.

You could tell from the rear that the first swift truck was an owner operator, he was centered in the parking spot. the company trucks are usually over the line or crooked as hell
They probably park at the TA so they can idle the truck, because they probably catch hell at the terminal for it. Plus beyond a free shower and laundry, sitting around at the terminal sucks ass

Oh i dont deny that some truck stops are much better then termnials. In fact many times i went to the tuck stop instead. But this place had a pump and that was it. I dont belvie it even had a shower or a lounge just a subway. The termnal in this case is the better option. But this story that it tell here is based on what drivers that have done it or know people that have done it. Plus its with in waking distance so why not park sowhere safe or are we that lazy that we can get out of or trucks
Yeah good ol' swifty. Looking for empty trailers all over the place. Such a wonderful experience. I also worked for Covenant "God what a nightmare". Those dudes made me miss swift. Swift is probably better than almost all the other companies in my opinion. But they all really suck so that's not saying much.
I think they park at the truckstop because they don't want to be awaken on their brake by a mechanic who wants to do service on your truck. out of sight out of mind. I used to love the terminals, that's about the only thing I miss about them. But the driver pay reflects those nice terminals. The upkeep of twenty eight terminals and like a million drop yards has to come from somewhere.
