  • jelboysvw you are 100% right. in my eyes it was all over bar the shouting by the end of 74.coach loads of divs turning up at wigan, it ruined the atmosphere, the records turned to pop crap ,the magic i used to feel seemed to have seeped away. many great sounds dicvered later, but, and its a big but, the magic had been sold down the river.it happens to all youth cults; when they are underground they are great , when they are common knowledge they are ruined.

  • i went the casino and the only place that has the same atmosphere with people music not northern soul is glastonbury festival but that is now being wrecked to commercialisam

  • The casino one of the great alnighters. Iam now 50 and still go to the odd nighter keep the faith.

algorithms and makes you profit in the long run! LOVE IT!

  • I used to hate having to watch my big brother leave on a friday and return on a sunday from wigan casino and the likes (we lived in edinburgh) the PLUS side was that he'd come home and teach me and my sisters x3 the moves.... 35+ years later i can still carry it on... soul is for living' Northern Soul is to die for..

  • The Vocal side is the best side

  • 2 dance 2 this music u must have soul simple

  • cant see how you can dance to the music...too slow and no funk

  • @welshhibby Aye ok welsh, a decent dancer can dance to most things and Breakaway has some kicking breaks in it for anyone being a bit flash - it's not all 100mph.

  • Whats the song called please? love it.

  • Comment removed

  • " Breakaway" The Steve Karmen Big Band. united artists label..I think

  • Cheers Matey

  • the guy @ 3:16 is hot...grrrr

  • wigan was brilliant until hey let the camera`s in and had the dancers on top of the pops

moral clash we wanted success for the artists but the scene exclusive for lovers of real soul music

  • @banburger Im glad they let the cameras in the casino. If not for that i wouldnt have known what it was like back then because i was too young to go, then it got hit by that fire and that was that, i was never going to experience it... So im really thankful (as are some others im sure) that we have this footage to see the memories of a great place. So please dont be selfish because i enjoy these videos about things i wasnt able to do :P

    Peace.

  • @4RedDwarf3 I'm sorry to burst your bubble mate but it wasn't really like that, yes you heard the tunes but no way did any of that filming capture the true essence of the place. the real good dancers where upstairs in Mr M's on that night or just didn't show up at all!! Word got round about the cameras and quite a few crews who had been there from the early days just boycotted the night outright. There was a massive posse from the Widnes/Runcorn area that didn't go at all I remember it well :((

  • @jahvoke Well shame on those people then mate, for not showing the world what they loved. Im sure all those people that never turned, up or hid upstairs, took something away from the overall experience and what you see on camera, but that doesnt detract what i can see anyway. Its probably a good thing they arent there to see, and im betting all these years later they hate they arent immortalized in these videos hehe.

  • durophet . green n clears. steladex .philon .

  • Yep, those "WERE" the days..............

    lol

  • Rebirth , I totally agree, I was there in the Seventies, Wigan, Mecca,

Just friendship and a mutual apriciation of the music.

In fact when the druggies started to come to my local club it closed down. We hated them, they were nothing to do with loving the music .

  • Johnny come lateleys couldn't dance for toffee. The real deal just did it and left the Top of the Pops influeced crowd to it.

  • Sorry, but no, all of us weren't smashed! May I speak for many who thrived on the atmosphere, the music, the collection of friends from all over the country, just the sheer joy of being there. We were knackered yes, but not smashed - it really was possible. But its ok if you were!

  • northern soul. .the best music to ever hit a dance floor by a long way. keep the faith, and keep scootering as well ! ! "a way of life"

  • Just fab!!...thanks for the share!...x

  • Previous comment cool...everyone got smashed and had a great night....thats where our youth dont get it....no attitude at dance nights....enjoy yourself and if a guy dances better than you...so what..enjoy the moooooves and learn.

  • Introduction of drugs by low life scum stuffed NS in late 70s, peeps who still KTF are still involved in getting this great music back in the culture of North England and Scotland

  • this is wonderful thank you so much for the memories.

  • no drink needed then to have a good time. I cannot remember any fighting or issues at all. no pushing on the dance floor (even upstairs in M's where there was hardly any room and you couldnt bloody see much) why cant the youth of today enjoy life as much as we did then.

amazing memories, amazing music and met some amazing people. a reunion would be amazing. anyone up for it KTF

  • You did'nt see any fighting 'cos there wasn't any, everybody had a "good time" 'cos we were all Smashed!

  • durophe m

  • Brilliant ....so good to say "I was there" :)) ktf

  • cracking vid, good old days,

  • loving the walter jackson track have to stop buying records and goto the venues again

  • bring this music bck fab fab fab

  • listen to the shit played now. then this. what went wrong.. newcastle to wigan. good times

  • Overexposure is what screwed the northern soul scene up......It used to be an underground movement that was media free...until we got sold down the river by money grabbing tossers.

  • "Northern Soul has been described as the longest running fad in the history of UK music culture. What began as an underground 60s mod scene in unlicensed, no-frills clubs in the north of England is still very much alive and kicking in the twenty-first century.

  • @jelboysvw love your comments..you got it spot on my friend..

  • @jelboysvw to true couldnt agree more an exact observation ..right on

  • @jelboysvw So true mate...ain't that always the way. But you still got the way it was inside ya. KOKO.

  • Ha yes i agree but fuck it WIZZ was great before it got all trendy

  • superb!

  • It was for a Pontiac not a Mustang

  • The track is called Breakaway (part 2)

Its the instrumental version of Breakaway by The Steve Karmen Band featuring the vocal talents of Jimmy Radcliffe (Long After Tonight Is All Over)

The track was origInally used for an American advert for (I Think) The Ford Mustang

    Hope That Helps!

    Keep The Faith

  • Along with the wide spencers you needed a pair of massive fronted shoes a vest and a wrangler . 4 GRAM of whizz and the rest is legend.

  • top tune...what the hell is it?

  • Did anyone else have the wide wide spencers. Some people reacon they had 40s but the real night owls tell the tale of a magical pair of 46s.

  • Has anyone got footage from 28.04.76 when Junior Walker appeared and my mate Frank won the dance competition? Many thanks

  • great memories, i was one of those 'southerners' who got the coach from Portsmouth, it picked up in oxford and took me to the casino for my first visit in 1975. (my god looking back now, we were cooler then even we thought!)

I am so pleased to see the guy towards the end with the red neck scarf, because I wore one myself, I even have a picture of it somewhere, but thought maybe I was the only one as I never seen any on the other clips of the casino.

    Keep on keeping on

    trevor

  • hi ya trev, not many of us traveled from oxford, can you remember any of these names, tony hulbert(wilf), derek wilson, phil clewley, mark(sarge),can you remember the inter city soul club keep the faith phil c

  • the second tune is superb

  • Steve Karmen's Breakaway will always sum up NS for me. Layers of sound crafted on top of each other to create a driving sound. Love the bit on the mini-vid [ can't think what its called now ] where the lad gets a shoeing to try to stop him winning the dance contest, comes in to the club, all eyes on him and the DJ stikes this up and then the fella's away ...... Magical!!! :o) Even if he does beat a fellow Forest lad in the process :o)

  • Absolutely brilliant, when they say those were the days, they definately were. Watching the video brought back some fantastic memories .. Oh to be young again :)

  • i had many a great nite there like a lot more before me

  • Well done Red, another superb duo, bringing back more memories, particularly the late great Mr.Jackson, one of the great unsung heroes of our scene, an unbelievable soulful tune which evokes so many memories and emotions of a great part of my life.

  • Simply fantastic! Great use of Breakaway -This tune always reminded me of how different from the norm we were. When I first went to Wigan I use to catch a double decker bus. I would go on the upper deck and at each stop someone would get on wearing the gear :-) Full length leather, Royals, crew neck sweater, white belt/socks etc. Great song to end on. I don't think we will ever relay to others how fantastic it truly was. Young people having great fun. I am lucky to have been a part of it.
