Only thing with Chows is that they are in their eyes Alpha at all times. If the owner isn't stepping up and taking charge the Chow will do whatever it pleases. The owner must be firm and dominant when owning one.
We took our Chow puppy to the dog park four times a week religiously. As an adult, we still take him once a week, along with walks three times a day. We go out of our way to introduce children, strangers, and other dogs to him. Socializing a Chow is no joke, but it's unbelievably rewarding. This dog is gentle enough to play with toddlers, but loyal and protective enough that he warded off four adult males during an attempted car-jacking. Can't ask for more in a dog.
@lbccwelderman There are only the worst owners to get a Chow Chow or a Pit Bull. No dog is bad. When a dog is bad, you should just put the blame on the dog's owner.
I have two black chows of my own they are brother and sister but I had the boy fixed. Rocky and Misty are the most loving and loyal chows I have ever had. These are my fifth chows I've had and I would never get another breed. They are the best breed ever!!!!
yeah if you dont socialize a chow chow properly consider it a pretty mean one lol grandma had one and she woulndt walk it she'd keep it in the back yard the whole time and when jock got loose it was hell for any one who got by he was only nice to me and my grandma he didnt like any one else
@xHaxiejj It is NOT TOO LATE to train your chow. You need to have your dog around other people, but it's important that the new people don't overwhelm your dog with attention. Let your dog get used to them on his own. As for other dogs, let your dog meet another dog on neutral territory while both dogs are on leashes and watch them closely. If they seem OK with one another, eventually let them off their leashes BUT WATCH THEM CLOSELY AND END THE MEETING IF EITHER GETS AGRESSIVE.

@MrPkmaster99 They will take a lot of your time but you will have a lot of fun in my opinion :) Get them one by one and play by year to see how much you can handle. One by one will also give you time to train each one before you get another, training will be essential, that they come when called, and not rambunctious. Maybe get the german shepherd first, as it is quite an easily trainable dog if you know what your doing. All dogs are safe together if they get to know each other first.

I love chow's. :] we have 2 chow mixes now, our oldest dog a full bred chow recently passed. they're such loyal dogs. I love it, one is chow border collie, and she's just so protective of my 1 year old newphew, he can pull her ears and her tail, the other is chow wolf, and again, so gentle with my nephew, he loves those two. :] chows are great dogs! they shed alot though! they're also quite stubborn xD
These dogs are not very good for children as they tend to bite..... However though not every dog is the same they have their own personalities so if you lik the dog for his personality get him not for his breed
I love Chows. I had 2 brothers, now 1 left. One of them passed away 3 mnths. ago. I still miss him a lot. He loved me much, was loyal to the fullest, sometimes hard to manage but his behavior was far beyond from an avarage dog. Istill have his brother 9 yrs.old. Very tranquil, loyal, chuby and handsome..
Certainly extremely loyal creatures. I have two, one a red female, mostly pure bred, and now a black male > The male was a rescue that may have been abused. We spent alot of time socializing him with people, and now he is great, gets along great with our three cats. The female was the sweetest dog in the world, only lived to be seven, died of cancer. I will always have Chow dogs!!
not so small weirs little lions! Love it, these dogs are the business, careful training and as much socialising as possible, that mean socialising with all people who regularly come to the house, friends, relatives, even the post man and all people and other pets it is likely to meet in the neighbourhood, also livestock and game if you live in a rural community! Not just the ppl who are actualy inside your house!
My Chow Chow is black and she doesn't bite all at. She is actually scared of people who try to touch her. She has to smell them and get to know them first. But she loves to be around people. I can trust her to be a good dog. She loves purple bows in her hair.
I have one myself, puppy, creme coat. Very cute! btw; I never heard about anyone who got bit by a chow chow and we've had 3 in the family I personally knew. they aren't agressive at all but they do have their own mind. And water is a hell for a chow, it will sink like a brick if it swims. Recommend as a first dog? It is possible BUT it's also a dog with a book, they're nice to children as long as they met them from the beginning, patience is aquired.
They aren't the oldest breed in the books! The Saluki is! Do some research, and Stop telling people dumb stuff just to get money. If you were correct, the world would b getting smarter not dumber, and you would get more money!
I have, and I know that it is an ancient dog breed, but that doesn't mean that it is the OLDEST breed! The Oldest Breed of Dog is the SALUKI! Because, I've done MY research(unlike some ppl, I'm not reffering 2 u) plus, on Dogs 101, they say that nearly every time the Bible says 'dog' it's reffering 2 a SALUKI! And when it's not, It's reffering to either a Basenji or an Afghan Hound!
i dont think chow chows would be a first good pet,if u dont have children they might be good, but they r very protective of their owner. for a first pet you should try getting a labrador, they r great dogs and love children.
chows are the best breed ever. i love 'em! they are clean, don't mind being alone, don't need a lot of exercise....they are just perfect! if you get them from a reputable breeder and socialize the chow at a young age, they are a good companion.
i wont own anything other than a chow by far da best breed chows do not liked 2 be touched except by their owners they dont warn like other breeds do they stand their ground and bite if touched they will bait you to 2 this also my mom had a 100 pound chow it NEVER bit me because i respected the fact it didnt want me 2 touch her chows r stubborn u will not force your will on them unless u r their master they are extremely loyal n very powerful respect them n their territory n they will not harm u
They are nice. But generally they cling to their master and is particular about others. If you got owned when three - it's obviously the dog wasn't introduced to kids. Or most likely, you were not taught how to approach the dog as Chows are particular about being touched, etc. Yeah, they are stubborn but that's just the dog's nature.
It's hard to teach a 2 or 3 year old how to approach a dog. I was simply trying to pet him. There was a recent case where a Chowchow bit and killed a newborn that was brought home for the hospital. I believe theyre trainable, but their temperment is hard to control.
Agreed.....horrible dog....I had a nice "introduction" when I was a kid to this "amazing" breed.....the owner forgot to tell me that his dog didn't like other people so when it started in one me and I thought it was playing, it actually drew blood......if they like you, you're fine,,,,if not, you are toast....fucking evil dogs...
You idiots... these are along the Spitz fighting dog line, of course they are going to be like that, especially when you bring strangers into a new setting... I find that with all dogs descending from Spitz, such as Akita/Tosa, you just need to have them let there way, because they will fight for it.
I don't doubt that....what I do know is that the chow had my arms for lunch,,,I remember the big lion head and the tongue that looked like a totrtilla chip
A Chinese bas-relief from 150 BC shows a hunting dog similar in appearance to the Chow. Later, Chow Chows were bred as general-purpose working dogs for herding, hunting, pulling and guarding-----from wiki
I have had two chows, and they are quiet, they don't require a lot of exercise, and both of my chows were socialized from the time they were puppies and were very friendly. If you have a bad dog, then it's often the fault of the owner for improper training and socialization. I love chows, and both of mine were fabulous! It is still my breed of choice. As with any pet, however, researching a breed is important before you buy a dog!
I've had 2 Chows in my lifetime (and currently a chow mix) and they are wonderful dogs. Loyal, great with my small kids and their friends and other people. (Birthday parties were the best!) They were the easiest dogs I've ever housebroken, too!
nope it aint a ppl friendly dog my grandma had 2 the first 1 kiki was like a tan color and it was mean it was always grauling so i never went near it then it died so she got a new 1it was black and named mokie it was cool but it was mean to it didnt do much grauling but it barked all the time and i got bit pletty of times like i would pet it and i would pull my hand away and it would lock on to it. i started bleeding n shit not cool.
The breed isnt bad. Its certain dogs, and certain onwers Maybe your grandma didnt raise him right. Or maybe the dogs were from a bad strain. I hate people who classify breeds as 'good' or 'bad'. Get over your stupid fears and give the dog a chance. Its because of people like you that dog bans are being made.
I don't know where they got that from. As far as aggression goes Chows are 1 people dogs. They will tolerate others but they are typically loyal to one. They can be aggressive towards strangers but that typically happens when their "mommy" or "daddy" is around. They are natural protectors. Bottom line good socialization and training counts for everything. These are the best dogs!
If someone was bitten by a Chow, DON'T BLAME THE BREED. Dogs (ANY breed) are like children. If it has good bloodlines and you raise it right, it won't be a biter. People need to stop blaming the breed!! My Chow is a sweetheart, and he is 12 years old now.
I have a chow mix--she has Chesapeake Bay Retriever and Karelian bear dog in her background. I've owned her nearly 3 years. She is not a dog for everyone, but she's been good for my family, and she's smart. She's fierce and protective, but I trained her not to bite when she was a puppy. She has never bitten.
Quiet? Haven't met my two Chows... but yes, a fantastic breed: loyal, smart, beautiful. They have a ton of personality and are stubborn, no matter how well socialized they are, and ours are. You can't be a wuss with a chow (by that, I do NOT mean that corporal punishment is OK.. it's not). They really do not destroy stuff... we still have stuffed toys from our first chow's puppyhood 5 years ago. Chows are friggin' awesome.
My chow is 12. I've had her since 6 months. She's a shelter dog, yet is full blood chow. I've worked with her since I got her--to make sure she is socialized, loved and has discipline. She is stubborn but knows her boundaries. She has lived with hamsters, another mixed breed chow (who was 10 weeks when we got him) and currently lives with two house rabbits who play around her. She has never been aggressive after being introduced. I am confident in her but also careful.
Sorry to hear about the bites. I have 2 Chows myself and they are and can be a lovable loyal breed. You have to understand that Chows are a very old breed, statues 5k years old have been found of them. They were not used as a companion but rather as a war dog, pulling carts, fur trade and a food source. Never as a friend, so they have a mistrust of strangers and must be socialized, unfortunately some of the owners of this beautiful animal are too stupid and irresponsible to even own a goldfish.
Chows are not the best breed for everyone/anyone. They DO have a certain personality traits and tendencies that DO NOT mesh well with every owner or every environment. Not all chows are "mean." But they certainly CAN be. They are by far my favorite breed of all time.
I had a chow mix dog for a few years. Smartest dog I've ever known, a true dog genius, but just as stubborn as the day is long. Loved me, hated strangers. I've also known a black purebred chow that was kept as a yard dog at an asphalt plant. The wealthy plant owner put him there after he bit the newspaper boy, the mail man, the house maid, and anyone else he could get his teeth into. After two full years of coaxing I got him so I could put a leash on him and walk him around the property.
idk why chows have such a bad reputation. and why r u saying that doberman pinscers are better? All dogs are special in their own way, you shouldnt judge them. But chows are very protective and will bite if u pass its territory.
I have had chows my whole life. Only get one from a qualifed breeder. This women is somewhat misleading. She's only use to blue blood dogs. Most buy from a puppy mill sad to say. The SPCA hates to go on Chow calls. They are a stuborn breed and are very agressive. One family dog, even if socialized. There great but you must be dog savy about this breed. Buyer beware. Most Chows are put down for agresssion. Ask any vet. There called the lion dog for a reason.
My neighbors had a black chow. The chow loved me cause I saw him a few times a week when he was young, and I pet him along the fence whenever I saw him.
But 2 years later (2001), that damn chow came out of their yard and killed my 15 yr old cat that was in our side bushes. He mauled her and snapped her neck. We had to put her to sleep.
I don't put the full blame on him - the neighbor's youngest son was a total jackass who is currently in jail for stealing and possession of drugs.
I was attacked by a chow when I was younger. Nothing too serious though. However, I've learned of 2 other people who've been attacked by chows as well. Also, my friend right now has a chow/mix and it has minor aggression problems that the he has to constantly watch when friends come over. They've been know to kind of snap from time to time. I'm sure they are great with the owner...but personally, I see nothing appealing about this breed. It takes a special person I suppose. My friend loves it.
Only thing with Chows is that they are in their eyes Alpha at all times. If the owner isn't stepping up and taking charge the Chow will do whatever it pleases. The owner must be firm and dominant when owning one.

Nice pet my ass. my moms chowchow owned me when I was three. Still got scars. Theyre stubborn, and hate new people in their life.
Kaminaz1 2 years ago
They are nice. But generally they cling to their master and is particular about others. If you got owned when three - it's obviously the dog wasn't introduced to kids. Or most likely, you were not taught how to approach the dog as Chows are particular about being touched, etc. Yeah, they are stubborn but that's just the dog's nature.
HammandClov 2 years ago 2
It's hard to teach a 2 or 3 year old how to approach a dog. I was simply trying to pet him. There was a recent case where a Chowchow bit and killed a newborn that was brought home for the hospital. I believe theyre trainable, but their temperment is hard to control.
Kaminaz1 2 years ago
Agreed.....horrible dog....I had a nice "introduction" when I was a kid to this "amazing" breed.....the owner forgot to tell me that his dog didn't like other people so when it started in one me and I thought it was playing, it actually drew blood......if they like you, you're fine,,,,if not, you are toast....fucking evil dogs...
morebooks2005 2 years ago
You idiots... these are along the Spitz fighting dog line, of course they are going to be like that, especially when you bring strangers into a new setting... I find that with all dogs descending from Spitz, such as Akita/Tosa, you just need to have them let there way, because they will fight for it.
JayDomination 2 years ago
It depends on owner, my chows would never do something like that ever. The owner must have been a dip shit.
tronbomb32 2 years ago 3

(Birthday parties were the best!) They were the easiest dogs I've ever housebroken, too!

nope it aint a ppl friendly dog my grandma had 2 the first 1 kiki was like a tan color and it was mean it was always grauling so i never went near it then it died so she got a new 1it was black and named mokie it was cool but it was mean to it didnt do much grauling but it barked all the time and i got bit pletty of times like i would pet it and i would pull my hand away and it would lock on to it. i started bleeding n shit not cool.
soilder773 3 years ago
The breed isnt bad. Its certain dogs, and certain onwers Maybe your grandma didnt raise him right. Or maybe the dogs were from a bad strain. I hate people who classify breeds as 'good' or 'bad'. Get over your stupid fears and give the dog a chance. Its because of people like you that dog bans are being made.

My Chow is no where near quiet!!!!!
TatianaSOMUSICALMIND 3 years ago

She has never bitten.
chowchessie10 3 years ago
Chows are friggin' awesome.
zoe1974 3 years ago 3
My chow is 12. I've had her since 6 months. She's a shelter dog, yet is full blood chow. I've worked with her since I got her--to make sure she is socialized, loved and has discipline. She is stubborn but knows her boundaries. She has lived with hamsters, another mixed breed chow (who was 10 weeks when we got him) and currently lives with two house rabbits who play around her. She has never been aggressive after being introduced. I am confident in her but also careful.
peccadilloangel 3 years ago
Sorry to hear about the bites. I have 2 Chows myself and they are and can be a lovable loyal breed. You have to understand that Chows are a very old breed, statues 5k years old have been found of them. They were not used as a companion but rather as a war dog, pulling carts, fur trade and a food source. Never as a friend, so they have a mistrust of strangers and must be socialized, unfortunately some of the owners of this beautiful animal are too stupid and irresponsible to even own a goldfish.

I was severely bitten by one of these dogs after petting it. This not people friendly dog. Beware!

But chows are very protective and will bite if u pass its territory.
xoOMGxocutie 3 years ago 3

Tomahawk52 3 years ago
I was attacked by a chow when I was younger. Nothing too serious though. However, I've learned of 2 other people who've been attacked by chows as well. Also, my friend right now has a chow/mix and it has minor aggression problems that the he has to constantly watch when friends come over. They've been know to kind of snap from time to time. I'm sure they are great with the owner...but personally, I see nothing appealing about this breed. It takes a special person I suppose. My friend loves it.
