I have one and had idle problems. It turned out to be a lose connection on the positive and negative wires going to the coil. I had only found out when changing the coil because that made a good connection when connecting the little clip back. The hesitation is probably the accelerator pump on the carb. I'd deffinately think about getting a new one or buying a new intake with a better edlbrock carb. Hope this helps. Try wiggling the wires going to the coil and see if it changes in idle speed.
I find it strange that it has an electric fuel pump. Ive never seen a GW with an electric pump before. Perhaps its flowing more fuel than it should. Also, you could have your carburetor rebuilt by a shop, or install a new one, and it would probobly fix everything.
Funny you should say that, I just ordered an Edelbrock yesterday. Although it's going in my other, better Wagoneer. This one will likely be sold for it's axles and transfer case or simply donated to charity.
when you have a destroyed engine, no matter what car, why not just buy a used viper engine off ebay and install that?

Previous owner put the electric fuel pump in. It's on the undercarriage near the driver's door.
I think I might just buy a new carb and drop it in. I've heard that's cheaper than having it rebuilt.
