Could it not be possible that Bride mixed up the title from another song? Another song that the other witnesses claimed was being played? After all, he was a trained observer of sound working with Marconi sets, NOT with musical pieces or of musicianship. I think there is some room for error with getting song titles mixed up here.
@Gozalus Apart from Songe D'Automne, the other two suggestions were Nearer My God To Thee and Londonderry Aire. The main part of Automne does sounds VAGUELY like Nearer My God To Thee, which possible where the confusion comes from. That's only a slight possibility though. The notes in some parts are similar. It has to be the British version of Nearer My God To Thee though (the one from A Night to Remember, not James Cameron's Titanic).
Harold Bride claimed the song was called Autumn, and probably meant this song by that name. His is the only known account of the sinking that makes this claim, but the claim has some weight as Bride was on board till the bitter end, and as a wireless operator he was a trained observer of sound.
Whatever song it was that the band actually played, it was still an extraordinary display of bravery in the face of certain death.
Some believe ( including me ! ) that this tune was the last played by the ships band as the Titanic sank to the bottom of the Atlantic ...others believe that it as the hymn " Nearer My God To Thee"..
The surviving ship's radio operator Harold Bride gave this information about Song d'Autumn..
If it IS true what a fitting send off to the dear old Titanic..
@weediebloke the person whoclaimedthatit wa near my god to thee...had left the sinking ship on a lifeboat hour and half befroe the ship sank completely so there was no way they could have known
