  • If I'm not mistaken the "gaps" in the histogram also represent the lost or deleted information from the process you used to achieve your version of the image?? other then that Nicely shown, very informative. (not the way I would have done it, but I'm obsessive compulsive & don't want to loose any image detail. still I learned some new tricks, & look forward to seeing future tutorials.

  • Haha, I'm OCD about gaps in my histogram too! I wonder if this effect is recreated in Camera Raw instead when it's still possible to take advantage of the full bit depth, and if so would the histogram still have gaps? Or at least get a start on the dramatic contrast in Camera Raw, then finesse it in Photoshop. Anyway, thanks for the good video! : )

  • great great work!!

thank you for all the information!!!

  • Hi Its now 4am here in N . Ireland' and I just wanted to say that I have been spell bound by your tutorial and how very interesting the perception and interpretation of how you showed the work

  • Really good im sub!

  • Why does it take 21 minutes to explain how to change a simple photo to black and white?

  • it's grayscale, not "black and white", and I don't know why it takes him so much damn time to explain it.

  • Note the title, "High Contrast Black&White."

And that picture is black & white, is it not?

  • Note the different shades of gray in the image. Unlike grayscale, B&W is just black and white.

  • Thanx mate!

For the second picture: I tend to think that the other guy seperated the water from the pier as well, your water is too contrasted, he doesnt have so many pure blacks. Thus i guess he didnt use a dodge effect. But I just learned how to apply a dodge effect on a new layer! and the shift+click with a brush! And the ctrl+M to move the selection! I used it only for shapes) hahaha Ps is so amazing.

  • thx for sharing :)

  • como pongo mi photoshop en español?

  • Lo tienes ke comprar en Español

  • genius! thanx alot

  • Great tutorial, about 10mins too long for what was taught though. Not that i'm complaining!!!!

  • great tutorial. thank you for sharing.

  • This tut is excellent, many thanks for sharing :-)

  • thx very much

    good stuff

    keep on postin' !

  • great tutorial... which it could have been more to the point though... still great.

  • CORRECTION: The comb-like lines in the histogram (aka spikes) are not becos of low-res file or caused by the "abrupt transition" on the building as you point out @ 7:35.

They occur when adjustments (esp in Levels/Curves) are really pushed and you start to clip/lose information. Hence the histogram is fine before you did the Levels. Basically its a bad thing and thats why proper exposure is even more critical on digital cameras.

I like your tutorials but some of what you say is untrue.

  • btw - white is not the absence of color (18:15) - black is. White is the addition of RGB.

  • Great tutorial, thanks for the tips! I got a black and white photo assignment due in and this helps tremendously!

  • Excellent tutorial. I can't thank you enough - it is people like you who are really enhancing what teaching on the internet is all about. You went at a pace that would allow even a relative beginner to follow. I am reasonably experienced with CS3 and I still liked how you explained what you did. DO NOT LISTEN to the people complaining about how much you spoke - I would MUCH MUCH rather have too much explaination than too little.

    FANTASTIC JOB!!!!

  • Is it possible to "stretch faces" in adobe photoshop CS2?

  • yes it can be done easily with free transform after you select the face with magic lasso or magic wand

  • or even use the liquify tool

  • Great artistic tutorial. You are one of the people who really contribute to the brain gain of the internet.

  • Very well presented. I am striving to improve my PS CS2 techniques and your demo was a fantastic help.

  • Thanx, I always wanted to learn how to do that, keep posting! !

  • quick-tutorials com

  • Good tutorial, I like how you use short cuts and show how they work in real application. I am not new to photoshop, and I still gained a lot of knowlege from your video. Do you have tutorial CD's for sale?

  • Great tutorial! Thank you. I enjoyed the background information. Very informative. The why's help one *think* about why one does something, so you're not just repeating parrot fashion when you try it for yourself.

Very clear presentation. Thank you for putting it together.

  • oh, get on with it man!

  • Thank you very much for sharing such interesting and valuable information. I do not use Photoshop but will apply this technique to GIMP.

  • yeah, this really helped out a lot. the details that people "didn't need" were actually relevant because a lot of people do slip up and use color options when working with B&W. GREAT TUTORIAL! i definitely added this to my favorites. keep them coming.

  • It's great Thank you a lot!

  • awesome ideas

  • Nice tutorial, just less of the blah blah blah at the beginning.

  • this isnt funny at all WTF

  • Nice ideas! I enjoyed all the tutorials I have seen so far. Thank you for showing how easy it is to improve an image.

  • thanks!
