  • The general sentiment in China towards the US and her allies resembles the general sentiment of Japan towards European powers prior to WWII. The anti-West sentiment is strongest among the younger generation, including the students studying abroad. All the anti-democracy comments on youtube are but one small indication. Remember youtube is blocked in China. So who are these people commenting on Youtube? You know the answer.

  • Japan and China are two very different countries. Japan was isolationist and then turned to expansionist, with resentment and competition from the west.

  • China, on the other hand went through the Opium war, Colonization of it's cities, Civil war in 1911 (Overthrowing emperor), Civil war (Commi-Democracy) in 1927, Japanese invasion in 1937, resume of civil war in 1945, and Indian intrusion of Chinese territory (that is of their opinion, both sides claimed the same territory). China is more scared of being dominated than anything else, it has been repeated in history with Manchurians, Huns (Mongols), Europeans, and Japanese.

  • Japan on the other hand has never been successfully invaded (The Mongol Empire's fleet was destroyed in a Tsumani after Japan's defeat). To sum it, you cannot compare China with Japan because Japan does not share the same history. You CAN compare China with Germany, where as after WW1, they felt as if they were mistreated and invaded. Furthermore, if more pressure is put into holding China back, then China will explode like Germany in WW2. Instead, we need to assure their safety.

  • that guy is leading us to believe that sweden and norway were once the most powerful nations in the world? talk about misleading! sheesh.

  • We Chinese people still didn't forget the help of USA in WWII. It is the Chinese communist who said USA as our enemy, not the Chinese people.

  • True, but its the same as saying that we havent forgotten the japanese, the brtish, and the french for their invasions and war against a weak and unprovoke China.

The french and the British still havent give back the Chinese relics that they have stolen during the 18-19th centuries.

  • Exactly why China will have a strong response to further provocations. Since it happened before in history, they are alarmed and will not let it happen again.

At the same time, if you approach them in a sensible manner, I'm sure they won't act irrational.

  • The idea that the "global economy" makes nationalism and militarism irrelevant is a dangerous one. China still has a big chip on their shoulder from the colonial era of the early 20th century and 20 years from now China will be in a position to regain their power and prestige in the world. As long as the CCP and the PLA are in charge, China is a grave threat to Asia and (in the future) the world.

  • Understand China's history. There is no way China can invade anyone, from a geological standpoint. China's agenda will always be stability (being one of the last communist parties in the world), and safety from invasion that occurred numerous times in the 19th and 20th century. What makes you think they can invade the other nations in Asia? They are not irrational and stupid. Foreign threats unify China. But foreign aid and safety breaks communism and oppressive governments.

  • You are thinking only of today and not of the future. China is trying to achieve a balance of a market-based economy and an authoritarian regime. China has persued a defensive military posture in the past because they had no choice. They will have more options in the future. Power corrupts and goes to people's heads. Human beings haven't changed all that much, global economy or not.

  • True. U.S.A. should always be on the ready and defensive.

It is a very delicate situation because if we suppress China, then the people will unite against us and support the protection that the Communist Regime offers.

That is why we need to reach out economically and be politically delicate. Or else they will unite just like America after 9/11

  • I am all for trade and dialogue with Beijing. What I am not in favor of is catering hand and foot to everything that China wants. Whenever engagement = appeasement, trouble soon follows. They have four times the population of the United States and have not shown any real signs of democratization since we started our "engagement" policy in the 1990's. I remain a skeptic that it will work anytime soon. I hope I am wrong.

  • I agree

  • John Mearscheimer's comment about Cold War not turning into a "shooting War" is inaccurate IMO. I see the Korean War, and Vietnam/US as part of the "Shooting" within Cold War context.

  • The Tao which can be named is not the eternal Tao. The china threat which can be described is not a genuine threat either.

  • When and where is this debate forum taken place?

  • what you fear is what you get america!
