OMG!! I can't believe someone posted this! I was there that night and I never EVER forgot it! She was FAAAAABULOUS! You tired-ass drag queens of today need to watch this over and over and get a clue to how it is done.
GOD BLESS YOU for bringing back the memories of that night. Thank You so much for posting this. Thank You!!!! I was very fortunate to later work with Lypsinka in her piece for the WIGSTOCK movie and I remember her being so SWEET & LOVELY to be around and work for.
I was there that night (and most every other night, for that matter) and I can say that it was one of the most memorable evenings of my life. For me, Lypsinka is in a class by herself. If I were forced to make a list it would also include Justin Bond, Ethyl Eichelberger, Miss Glamamore, Tabboo!, and Hattie Hathaway - queens who not only entertained you but also made you think by bringing disparate elements together to create a whole which was greater than it's parts. Those were the days!!
I am desperate to identify the audio clip pertaining to "Mrs. Whitney Ames and her debutante daughters Susan and Lydia"...anybody know what this is from???
@ToddK1969 I've watched this a couple times now (so incredible!) and the voice on that bit sounds like susan hayward to me.... looked through her film credits on imdb and find "I Can Get It For You Wholesale" (1951) about a "ruthless fashion designer".... never seen the film though... could that be it?? I'm curious too....
@EvelynThomasElite Thank You, yes I did some research and found out about "Butterfield 8," as well as X,Y, and Zee. I've watched "Butterfield" since, and will watch the others, too. Again, Thanks so much!
Does anyone know where she's getting her material from when the script gets tawdry? I know some of it is from "Carrie," but in particular when she says, "! loved it! Every awful moment of it I loved!"
Men like John Epperson and Charles Busch lifted drag from merely Saturday night camp at the local gay bar into intelligent comedic performance art. I think of the pretty, effeminate boys I've seen in hooker shoes and MAC make-up, lyp syncing poorly to whatever pop vixen of that moment and I yearn for a Lypsinka. People will mention Lady Bunny, but I'm not a huge fan of conventional stand-up comedy. For me, Lypsinka, Varla Jean Merman, Charles Busch and the like, are consumate performers.
I LOVE La Lyp...I've seen her shos so many times here in NYC...probably 7 or 8 times. Always a laugh- riot and I leave there feeling lighter than air. THANK YOU for posting this
Now that is a Drag Queen to respect!

If I'm not mistaken it's Susan Hayward from a movie called "Back Street", with John Gavin, from 1961.

I love this perfomance. I've seen her probably 4 times. Three times in SF and once in LA. In LA got to go back stage and meet John.
