PCs rightfully rule the world and to this day you cannot buy a Mac which competes in terms of performance or reliablity at the same price point, and at server level forget it. What he did is tap into a section of the buying public which is less technically savvy but more impressed by image and aesthethics (i.e. shallow). He brought us appealingly packaged chinese made products which would have appeared anyway, and hurt people.
Steve Jobs didn't invent capactive/resistive touch, MP3 compression or cell phone technology, just the same as Dyson didn't invent cyclone technology. All these guys did was take existing technology and apply it to consumer goods, patent 'the application' and move manufacturing to China. They simply saw the opportunity to capitalise on something before others, that's all. You can be certain that we'd still have these devices if Jobs or Dyson were never born.

NeXT computers sold 50,000 units.
NeXT technology was years ahead of its time, always stable and easy to use.
NeXT computers were used by NSA, CIA and universities etc.
The internet was designed and first run on Tim Berners-Lee's NeXT Cube

@ahsj7 Its actually known that he said no to the cancer operation because he wanted to try alternative ways to cure his cancer. Jobs later said that he regretted that he didn't take the operation.
