its awesome he could play banjo and i didnt know he could. but i rather see him in more movie because he is funny as hell and he dont need foul words to make his movie funny
My fav was always dueling banjo's . Can't remember the movie they featured it in . It was with Burt Reynolds and boating trip in the backwoods of the blue ridge mountains .
I love it whenever I happen to see a spat about Steve's "ranking" as a musician. The simple truth is that he is a highly gifted musician and might have become one of the greats like Bela Flick had he elected to pursue such a career. He chose instead to become an entertainer, but never abandoned his passion for music.
What makes this so remarkable is just how many things old Stevie actually excels at. A de facto Renaissance Man of the Arts. I say leave the debate and enjoy the show.
If you have to explain the allusion, it isn't a very good one. Bela is wonderful, but best of all time? I think he might even correct you at that silly notion. Yo do know that Martin is considered a grand master on the instrument, right? Martin is more of a classicist while Fleck is an innovative genius. They just have different approaches to the instrument; that doesn't make one better than the other. That is what makes this so much fun--the banjo unifies rather than divide.
@MrAnonOne Thank you -- it's like comparing Andres Segovia, Doc Watson, and Eric Clapton. Pointless and leading to naught but hurt feelings and time wasted that could have been spent listening to all 3.
that IS michael daves on guitar!!! that dude is amazing... check out Thile and Daves. genius collaboration between chris thile and michael daves. great stuff.
If the world made sense, Bela Fleck would be on TV because Bela Fleck is playing banjo, not because Steve Martin is playing banjo. Bela Fleck is a better sport than I am. He's a way better banjo player than me and Steve.
You should take a look at Bela Fleck's documentary(Throw Down Your Heart) on the banjo and where it originated. Then tell me what you think of both his playing and what a "real" banjo should sound like. Or even what a real banjo IS. Either way enjoy music.
This is even better than Cheaper By The Dozen and Cheaper By The Dozen 2. Nearly as good as Father Of The Bride but better than Father Of The Bride 2. I could go on, but I wouldn't want to bore you. I do think this is pretty awesome. Especially cos he wrote the tune. Better than both Pink Panthers...
I can appreciate what Bela does with the banjo, but just don't like his sound or style. I guess I'm old fashioned and like a banjo to sound like a banjo.
I remember way back in Saturday Night Live's early years seeing Steve play banjo. I thought then if he ever gives up comedy he has a future as a banjo player. I was right. Of course, Bela knocks this song out of the park, but Steve and Tony ain't no slouches.
I saw Bela Fleck last night. Saw him with my own eyes, heard him with my own ears but I still can't believe any human can do that. That also goes for the other musicians in the Flecktones. So nice to experience real, skilled musicians who have truly mastered their instruments.
I learned from Peter Wernick's classic book "Bluegrass Banjo" and then picked (:)) a bit of Tony Triscka and Bela Fleck's stuff up. I agree, Fleck is IMMENSE.
They're all great but Bela is truly otherworldly. If you ever have a chance to see Bela or Tony live, grab it, especially Bela now that he's with the original Flecktones. Someday you can tell your kids you saw perhaps the greatest banjo player ever to pick up the instrument, and as a bonus one of the worlds' greatest harmonica players, Howard Levy.
Love all the players, but Bela Flek is just plain dirty. He's the Franz Liszt of Banjo. (that's the equivalent to saying he's the probably the best person to play his instrument of all time.)
@TheHugh4893 I saw Bela and Tony play in Telluride two weeks ago. They were out of this world. Another fella to look out for is Noam Pickemy. I'm not entirely sure if I spelled his name right, but he plays with the Punch Brothers. He was mentored by Bela.
I really enjoy instrumenal music. This speaks for itself, anywhere, anytime. It's good stuff. I would like to see Martin and Williams ( Robin) guitar and bango together in a movie. ( I don't know if Robin knows guitar ) but see them in a movie Touring Alaska, meeting the natives, and other major native location as ( displaced priest, and following monk. ) Or simply them selves. Learning deeper truths, simplicities of learning how and when in lead and follow. Acceptance of self.
@HOUNDAWG I'm a little confused I've heard and seen Bela quite a bit and I've never once heard of him playing Clawhammer style. He's (as far as i know) straight up three finger scruggs style. I'll give you this though ultimately Bela blows steve and tony out of the water and that's saying something since I feel both of them are rock solid players.
Ha! They aren't really thinking about where they are, or who else is listening. All that matters is that the other guy is really good and it's sooo... great to play with them.
@DiezPhotographyUtah There's an album out there, probably thirty years old or older, called "The Steve Martin Brothers." Side A is standup comedy, side B is banjo.
possibly one of the coolest pieces of bluegrass on youtube, the harmonising bajos are wicked, not to mind that ridiculous guitar solo. even the double bass player is playing serious little melodies. QUALITY
