  • And Bela's riff at 00:38 sounds suspiciously like Big Country. I love it.

  • ...why is one of the related videos "Breast Flexing"? YouTube, you are quite the conundrum.

  • Steve's Excellent! Love watching him play banjo!

  • Those are some fresh baked rolls.

  • its awesome he could play banjo and i didnt know he could. but i rather see him in more movie because he is funny as hell and he dont need foul words to make his movie funny

  • Yea, but Bella's not as funny as Steve!

  • AWESOME!!!!!!!!!

    Thanks for posting!!!!!

  • A mild and hazy guy... not funny? Well, excyuuuuuuuuuuuuse MEEEEEEEEEE!

  • My fav was always dueling banjo's . Can't remember the movie they featured it in . It was with Burt Reynolds and boating trip in the backwoods of the blue ridge mountains .

  • @thanspapa Deliverance.

  • @thanspapa watch?v=Uzae_SqbmDE

  • Does anyone know what banjo Trischka is playing here?

  • D: well steve martin sure kicks ass on banjo D: HAHA!

  • I love it whenever I happen to see a spat about Steve's "ranking" as a musician. The simple truth is that he is a highly gifted musician and might have become one of the greats like Bela Flick had he elected to pursue such a career. He chose instead to become an entertainer, but never abandoned his passion for music.

What makes this so remarkable is just how many things old Stevie actually excels at. A de facto Renaissance Man of the Arts. I say leave the debate and enjoy the show.

    =3

  • Did I just see this? Or was this a dream holy moses!

  • Great stuff, they don't make very many of 'em like this.

  • If you have to explain the allusion, it isn't a very good one. Bela is wonderful, but best of all time? I think he might even correct you at that silly notion. Yo do know that Martin is considered a grand master on the instrument, right? Martin is more of a classicist while Fleck is an innovative genius. They just have different approaches to the instrument; that doesn't make one better than the other. That is what makes this so much fun--the banjo unifies rather than divide.

  • @MrAnonOne Thank you -- it's like comparing Andres Segovia, Doc Watson, and Eric Clapton. Pointless and leading to naught but hurt feelings and time wasted that could have been spent listening to all 3.

  • The best was Jay Bailey.

  • this guys insane still after 56 years of movie making and he is still kicking it !!!!

  • Martin's got a good roll

  • Trust me---Eddie Adcock could more than hold his own with this fine bunch !!

  • very much agreed. Others are good but Bela is the shit

  • UHHHH no, that's not whoever Ingram, that is

    Tony Trishka. Duh.

  • Like a baus.

  • Not sure, but I think that is Kenny Ingram on banjo standing next to Steve Martin.

  • @Deckerd724 No it's Tony Trischka

  • @Deckerd724 Negative. Tony Trischka

  • that IS michael daves on guitar!!! that dude is amazing... check out Thile and Daves. genius collaboration between chris thile and michael daves. great stuff.

  • @Dandare2302 Michael Daves

  • is that brittany haas on fiddle????

  • Not enough banjo.

  • I love this song! And is that a serious Steve Martin?

  • Oh my..this is so so so wonderful

  • That's "driving to a friend's house for a bbq and I hope his sister is there too" music.

  • @P00P0STER0US Or "driving to a friend's house for a bbq and I hope his sister (WHO HAPPENS TO BE THAT CHICK ON FIDDLE) is there too

  • @barscotch Why yes, yes that would definitely have me driving to the bbq :)

  • Another great band that Tony is in......My god He's the best... wow! You shoulda seen him in Breakfast Special... Just as wow...GREAT MUSICIAN.

  • Jens Kruger... period.

  • Triple Banjo Concerto....

  • No question Bela is great. Check out Gerry O'Connor on Irish banjo. Different style of playing, but magnificent also.

  • GREAT!!! YEAH!!!

  • I think Steve wrote this song.

  • Is Steve playing a Chief there?

  • Double Bass Player and Violinist are FANTASTIC. They hold the whole thing together.

  • Double Bass Player and Violinist are FANTASTIC. They hold the hole thing together.

  • who is the young girl playing violin--does anyone know?

  • @jsjones3

    Brittany Haas

  • ricky skaggs kentucky thunder comes to watseka theatre watseka illinois on friday august 26, 2011

  • If the world made sense, Bela Fleck would be on TV because Bela Fleck is playing banjo, not because Steve Martin is playing banjo. Bela Fleck is a better sport than I am. He's a way better banjo player than me and Steve.

  • Anyone else think it sounds like Angeline the Baker?

  • Bela Fleck, of the Flecktones? OMG

  • Comment removed

  • Probably the only time Bela's ever worn a necktie on stage. Damn I luv that dude.

  • So much talent on one stage.

  • @mjtracy

You should take a look at Bela Fleck's documentary(Throw Down Your Heart) on the banjo and where it originated. Then tell me what you think of both his playing and what a "real" banjo should sound like. Or even what a real banjo IS. Either way enjoy music.

  • This is even better than Cheaper By The Dozen and Cheaper By The Dozen 2. Nearly as good as Father Of The Bride but better than Father Of The Bride 2. I could go on, but I wouldn't want to bore you. I do think this is pretty awesome. Especially cos he wrote the tune. Better than both Pink Panthers...

  • I can appreciate what Bela does with the banjo, but just don't like his sound or style. I guess I'm old fashioned and like a banjo to sound like a banjo.

  • I remember way back in Saturday Night Live's early years seeing Steve play banjo. I thought then if he ever gives up comedy he has a future as a banjo player. I was right. Of course, Bela knocks this song out of the park, but Steve and Tony ain't no slouches.

  • The violin player started it, Tony Triskka defined this tune, real and fine banjo, thanks for good music

  • that's just awesome !

  • I saw Bela Fleck last night. Saw him with my own eyes, heard him with my own ears but I still can't believe any human can do that. That also goes for the other musicians in the Flecktones. So nice to experience real, skilled musicians who have truly mastered their instruments.

  • I learned from Peter Wernick's classic book "Bluegrass Banjo" and then picked (:)) a bit of Tony Triscka and Bela Fleck's stuff up. I agree, Fleck is IMMENSE.

  • They're all great but Bela is truly otherworldly. If you ever have a chance to see Bela or Tony live, grab it, especially Bela now that he's with the original Flecktones. Someday you can tell your kids you saw perhaps the greatest banjo player ever to pick up the instrument, and as a bonus one of the worlds' greatest harmonica players, Howard Levy.

  • @frabis1 and perhaps one of the best bass players ever in Victor Wooten. For the style he plays he is incredible

  • The Jerk, the Teacher, the Star Pupil. :)

  • LOVE Steve Martin! I never knew he played! :Is there anything he cannot do?

  • Brittany Haas is on fiddle. Natalie Haas' sister according to Wikipedia. And of course Wikipedia is infallible ;)

  • Awesome. Anyone know who the fiddle player is?

  • 29 people were either expecting Steve to say "I'm a wild and crazy guy" or they were looking for Brandon Lee.

  • They are all Great but who is the girl playing Fiddle.

  • They are all Great but who is the girl playing Fiddle

  • I'LL TAKE ALL FOUR OF YOU AT THE SAME TIME.

  • Love all the players, but Bela Flek is just plain dirty. He's the Franz Liszt of Banjo. (that's the equivalent to saying he's the probably the best person to play his instrument of all time.)

  • @TheHugh4893 I saw Bela and Tony play in Telluride two weeks ago. They were out of this world. Another fella to look out for is Noam Pickemy. I'm not entirely sure if I spelled his name right, but he plays with the Punch Brothers. He was mentored by Bela.

  • @TheHugh4893 that lick at 2:21... what.the.fuck.?!

  • @blackdeathgrind Hanging out with Victor Wooten will do that to you. ;)

  • @TheHugh4893 I agree, but I've yet to see him set his banjo on fire...

  • @TheHugh4893 Thanks for assuming that everyone around you is ignorant. hahaha nah man i'm just kiddin'. You're right about that.

  • @TheHugh4893 Why not just say he's the Victor Wooten of banjo? Means the same thing....

  • I dissagree. Check out Bill McElreath. Hillbilly and clogger. And the greatest banjo player ever. PERIOD!!

  • @TheHugh4893 He's doing everyone else there a favor. Were Bela to really let go it would cause mayhem.

  • Oh Steve.. a true Renaissance man! Very talented in many areas.

  • OMG! Bela, Tony, and Steve???? It's a banjo-gasm!

  • OMG! Bela, Tony, ans Steve???? It's a banjo-gasm!

  • Phenomenal! Great to hear some new innovative bluegrass. Superb musicianship from the masters!

  • I don't think I breathed the whole time I watched this video!

  • Reason #83745926 why Steve Martin is a badass.

  • I really enjoy instrumenal music. This speaks for itself, anywhere, anytime. It's good stuff. I would like to see Martin and Williams ( Robin) guitar and bango together in a movie. ( I don't know if Robin knows guitar ) but see them in a movie Touring Alaska, meeting the natives, and other major native location as ( displaced priest, and following monk. ) Or simply them selves. Learning deeper truths, simplicities of learning how and when in lead and follow. Acceptance of self.

  • @HOUNDAWG I'm a little confused I've heard and seen Bela quite a bit and I've never once heard of him playing Clawhammer style. He's (as far as i know) straight up three finger scruggs style. I'll give you this though ultimately Bela blows steve and tony out of the water and that's saying something since I feel both of them are rock solid players.

  • Steve Martin is utterly amazing.

  • All great but Bela Fleck is the high priest of the 5 string claw hammer banjo.

A fire breathing monster who plays other worldly rock tunes with his own band.

It's like nothing I've ever heard.

Steve is okay but the 1st half of his last solo break his meter wandered just a bit. He's a little bit out of his class here.

  • I'm just curious, who are the 28 dick heads who didn't like this?

  • @ForexHustle Maybe they all got raped by Georgian hillbillies.

  • j3rk Remember when you could watch a video without having to sit through a commercial?

    WE MISS THE OLD YOUTUBE!

Post this in every video and lets start a youtube riot

  • fiddle player is Brittany Haas.

  • the mandolin solo on this song (on trischkas double banjo album) is great too

  • Bela Fleck, banjo vertuoso, great solo!

  • Anyone know who the fiddle player is???

  • steve was the best banjo player there Ya'll!!!

  • Hey Steve, why aren't you funny anymore? - Dennis Pennis

  • Bela Fleck banjo virtuoso, great solo!

  • LOVE IT! They are all the best at what they really do. It's great to see talent combined to make such a wonderful product.

  • Ha! They aren't really thinking about where they are, or who else is listening. All that matters is that the other guy is really good and it's sooo... great to play with them.

  • the fiddle player is HOT!!!

  • Bela owns. So excited for the new Flecktones album with Howard Levy back in the lineup.

  • Steve is great but he can't even hold a candle to Bela or Tony : )

  • If you know the history of banjo players, you will find out that Carl Jackson is about as good as it gets. However, Steve is talented.

  • Steve Martin IS THE GREATEST BANJO PLAYER EVER!!!!!!!!!

  • Is this the Greatest

  • steve is the GREATEST I have ever HEARD

  • Amazing!! I had no idea that beside a great comedian Steve Martin had that other great talent!

  • @DiezPhotographyUtah There's an album out there, probably thirty years old or older, called "The Steve Martin Brothers." Side A is standup comedy, side B is banjo.

  • ****DOES ANYONE KNOW THE NAME OF THE GUITARIST PLEASE??**** iv tried finding him somewherelse online but cant.

  • @MrBryancobbs

    Micheal Daves

He's really a singer, but as you saw, an amazing flatpicker

  • possibly one of the coolest pieces of bluegrass on youtube, the harmonising bajos are wicked, not to mind that ridiculous guitar solo. even the double bass player is playing serious little melodies. QUALITY

  • I think he plays banjo better with an arrow in his head. I'm only kidding

  • god i love bela fleck , the sweeps were NUTS

    Though!

  • Who knew Padmé played violin.

  • i saw a programme where his sister thought he was nuts because he would sit in his room playing the same tune on his bango for hours. i wonder what she is doing these days.

  • Had no idea Steve Martin played the banjo! As if he wasn't awesome enough to me!

  • @Shindai listen to some of his old stand-up his banjo is part of alot of his jokes.

  • @KillerOfGiants666 Thanks for the tip, I've never seen his stand up, I'm sad to say, i've only ever known him for his acting.

  • Fleck is sick!

  • FUCK YEAH, TONY TRISCHKA.

  • I NEVER KNEW STEVE MARTIN PLAYED BANJO!

  • @gearsdan

Look at all his old videos... you'll find about 1/2 of them featuring a banjo.

When I was a young man (a century ago)... he always had his banjo as part of his standup act. He's actually much, much better than what you see here. Of course, that's not saying a lot.. because he's pretty good here.

  • Yes, great Brittany.

  • Extremely good. Hughs from Buenos Aires.

  • Is that Brittany Haas?

  • Great music. I knew Steve was talented, but this shows just what another planet Bela is on. Gives you an appreciation for the difference between the varying degrees of high talent.

  • Steve Martin is the Man. He should be the Dos Equis guy.

  • PT&A is one of the best movies ever............. Steve Martin is a genius. Three Amigos kicked ass as well.

  • So unfortunate that we get such dumb comments on here ... no need to mention which one I refer to!

    This is great music ...

  • Just bow your head a 2:22, you are witnessing greatness.

  • Tony Trischka is an amazing player and wonderful human being!! Great song and performance by all!

  • real good stuff thumbs up up and away

  • My dad invented a great new thumb pick for banjo players, please take a look:

    saddlethumbpicks

  • who would of thought, he actually has talent...lol j/k I love steve martin.

  • Can anyone tell me what banjo each of them is playing, make and model?

  • Comment removed

  • @rdizzle187 You are right nobody just likes the Banjo. It is all something we all love.

  • Wow! At last here's something that Steve Martin is good at!

It's just pity he can't act and that he's not funny anymore!

  • Who is the fiddler!!?? She is awesome in presentation and backup!

  • Her name is Brittany Haas. A very talented fiddler and a Princeton graduate.

  • Three part harmony on banjo....who'd thunk it? Amazing!
