Yes but the card with the highest performance will adjust itself to the card with the lowest performance. So if you put those 2 in Cross you'll get the performance of 2 4850's ;)
well i spent 5 grand on my computer so i could play crysis. and every penny i spent was money earned working 35-40 hour weeks at a resturant when i was 16,17 and 18 in the summers between high school years. soooooo......yeah. blow me.

@TheStoic1 Hey bro, i have the same card as kelder and i can run crysis on medium with full AA settings. I can run crysis 2 on high with no AA and ill make it work with battlefield three.
No, and the 3870X2 sucks. Better go for single gpu cards. Dual gpu cards have microstuttering which is a hardware issue and still a problem till this day...
Only $2,000 pc's can play this game on ultra high, lol. I get somewhere around 30 fps running a single core 1.50ghz cpu and a ati radeon x300 series gpu at 128 mb of video ram. and I have 2 gb's of system RAM. I hope that helps. also, I have the windows 7 beta currently, and the aero theme slows it down alot, but vista basic used to run the game at around 47 fps.
I own a single gtx 280 now and it also does high resolution with 16xAA :D Awesome card. I will buy a second one when I have the i7 core with X58. Btw nice videos.
I say better one fast gpu core than 4 slower ones. Why? Because you will never get 100% out of crossfire or sli. Some games don't support it at all, like 'Armed Assault'. I sold the cards for good money, bought this 280gtx and a TV for it.
Ye and I can use Anti-anialising. Have fun with your low resolution, jaggy games. You know, some gamers are hardcore, and some are cheap-ass limp dicks with less knowledge than Bush. You are the limp dick in this case.
Hey now, you are stuck with a controller and little to no mods, or other third-party add-ons, and can only go up to 1080p. Enjoy buying the next game system for another $400 while we just upgrade for around $250. And good luck doing much besides gaming and the little media support you get on that system, while we on the PC and do just about anything we want.
i alsow hawe these cards, and the are a RIP OF! just some crap AMD made to get the buyers whant the DX10.1 so i sold them and bougth one 4870x2 it is like 5 to 8 times better, and that is no joke

This is what i have read online, i may be wrong though. either way, if that comp is running dx10 crysis i might upgrade abit and try it out
X38 has 32 pci-e 2.0 lanes and can do full x16 x16. By the way, this is not the issue of microstuttering. The real problem lies within the 3870X2 itself, to be precise: the onboard PCI-e switch on the card (PLX chip) has not enough bandwith. They fixed this on the 4870X2.
Ah, good to hear. Well, not to hear that is a 3870x2 problem but that they fixed it. I must have been thinking of another problem. Thanks for correcting me :)
So you sold your 2 3870X2's for how much?LOL.....omg....u sold those cards?A 280GTX is 17% faster than 1 3870X2......but it costs over 50% more than 1 3870X2......why would you do that? You have lost performnce now with the new 280GTX?lol.....or ur gonna get another 280GTX and SLI them?Your either stupid or have too much money, hope its the last one :P
You are the one being stupid. The 3870X2 suffers from microstuttering, no game runs really smooth. Since so much games lack quad-gpu support it's only a waste of power.
The 3870X2 is 15% slower than 9800GX2,but the 9800GX2 costs more(3870X2 = £150 ,9800GX2 = £217)
Is it worth paying roughly an extra 40% on a 9800GX2 for an extra 15% gain in performance over a 3870X2?Hell no!!
You can even buy a 4870 for £175,still alot cheaper than a 9800GX2 or GTX260/280
And its only 11% slower than the 9800GX2 and 13% slower than the big bad GTX280(costs £250 btw),isnt it glaringly obvious who is giving better value for money when it comes to graphics cards these days?
i'm a little new to all this...but my new pc is a intel quad Q9450, Asus p5k something or other, nvidia geforce 9800 gtx, 500g's hard drive, and 4 gigs of 'ddr3'(2?) ram.
so i went out and bought crysis and put the settings to high, with AA at 2x, and had noooo lag, chopiness or any other problem for about an hour and a half, two hours (resolution 1680x1050, 22 inch), then all of a sudden during one of the video scenes it just froze completely and i had to reboot. whew! lol any thoughts?
Since you're pretty new to the PC enthusiast scene, I assume you didn't check the temps. Make sure you have proper cooling and airflow for your systems interior so your video card and/or cpu don't overheat. Make sure the inside of your case is clean, and you have case fans sucking air in the front and out the back. Hope this helps, and, as always NEVER underestimate the power of Google. If you need help on something, looking it up on Google will solve the problem 99% of the time.
thanks for the help. u were right it was a cooling issue, i've replaced the stock fan with a new better one, and i'm running pc probe to moniter my cpu and motherboard temps...with the thresholds set fairly low.
Not twice. For example stalker and supreme command the 3870X2 is faster. Depending on crossfire support. In crysis 3870X2 is half slower, bad crossfire support. And it's not a problem, i already have them a half year. When 4870X2 comes I will buy that, but from 3870X2 to 4870 is not enough for me.
No, the 4870 performs identical, or better, than the HD3870X2 on any given task and especially during heavy filters and such. 3870X2 is usually a very questionable card, especially for the price where it doesn't perform that well nor does it run silent or efficient. Resolution isn't that heavy on the GPU - there's virtually no performance decrease from default to highest resolution using a HD4870 in Unreal 3 games and even World in Conflict.
Get a e8400 and overclock it to 4ghz its way better for crysis than any quad. i wish i got a e8400 and oced it to 4.3ghz instead of my 3.8ghz q6600...
Because it supports crossfire X :P Every X38/X48 intel chipset does support it. Maybe not on the box but if you look at the compatibility list on ati's website you'll see. It really works :D
With the sidepanel closed and default fanspeeds it gets hot. That is because ATI don't really mind about temperature, but more about cus alot of ppl complain about noise. So they are really silent but with 2 of them it's hot. I set fanspeed of 25% to 40% manually. Then they get around 35-40 Degrees Celcius instead of 60-70 degrees. :) And with fan on the back of cards they are around 25-30 degrees. This are all idle temperatures. Ingame they stay cool @ 40% fanspeed.
no, default is fine. Fanspeed will rise automatically when they get too hot. Just ATI cares more about silent cards these days than cool cards :) They take fanspeed down but... that's what you get if people complain about noise.
Dude I have a new CPU running @ 4GHz, check my other videos. Crysis has no advantage of quadcore. My rams are good and I have raid0 so what is your point?
Crysis take a lot of advantage of Quad core... it is programed to be a multi treath aplication so it uses the 4 cores...the diferecen between a Quad core runing at 4GHZ
and a Dual core Runint at the same speed on crysis is huge about 10-20 fps more and thats a lot , my point was that ,u cant have a good GPU and a bad CPU ect... because it
no, you're wrong. tests have been done and they all show no benefit for quad cores over dualies. i have a dual core E8400 @ 4.0 and Crysis only runs my CPU at an average of 60%. it really isn't that CPU-dependent.
You are really wrong, have you even checked out the benchmark link i gave you about crysis on quad vs dual? I guess not or else you wouldn't have commented here again.
The 4870 is comming out soon, the X2 will have to wait. Just like with the 3870 and much later the 3870X2.. I think it will take like 4 or 5 more months before you will see the X2 version.
Oh Keldererik ignore the nvidia fan boys. Crysis is NOT optimized for nvidia cards. If it was cryengine 2 would be using OpenGL. It is optimized using DirectX API's. Last time I noticed DirectX doesn't favor specific cards. Trust me on the AA thing tho. High end gaming doesn't require AA at all. AA is mostly for low res to smooth out jaggies.
but it is optimized for nvidia they said it in an interview while showing the game off for first time and even then they were using 2x 8800Ultras to run it proparly.
Keldererik I have a true crossfirex rig. The x2 is close in performance but its about 10% lower on crysis for w/e reason so I returned it. It might be because of the GDDR4 ram or x2 bridge chip. I run at 1680x1050 and get like 45~60. What I do is just turn off AA. When running at resolutions over 1440 you get a natural AA effect. Turning on AA at those resolutions does nothing other then smooth out the screen. Try it out. I'm 100% sure you'll be impressed by the speed increase and sharpness.
the only reason the 3870x2 produces such poor framerates is because Crysis is optimized for nvidia cards. if it weren't, the 3870x2 would probably make 50+fps on maxed out everything
hi mate i am gettin a 3870x2 to xfire with my 3870xt is their any probs wit xfire i should b aware of..... see a bloke have problem with post acpi - pci load up post. all info be wicked dude also what case you got them in im going to be installin in a thermaltake soprano case, sound vid by way
Just be sure your motherboard has the latest bios. What motherboard do you have btw? Some don't work with crossfireX like the P5B Deluxe I had, sold it and got myself the asus P5E (X38).
im runnin a p5b deluxe too LOL, but seem to be havin problem with temps on it with my q6600 and saph 3870xt etc. but (de-ja-voo) i gettin the x38 p5e also. any glitches with xfire?
XP dont work with 3 or 4 gpu's. Also crysis has some bugs with crossfire that i read about. Some people get worse performance with multi gpu in crysis. Im hoping the 8.4 drivers will make everything run smooth.
well i mainly game on xp but as i have got a dual boot OS ill try on both cant see why xp would not work with Xfire. thanks for the info but i think that i willl jus try it out for myself. thanks. be sure to chk my other vids and ill post vids of new build next month
Seems Crossfire X scales pretty good. I was curious cus the crysis benchmark tool didnt show ANY improvement with 2 vs 4 GPU's. So I tested the above myself ingame.. :)
You can't multiply numbers when you go sli or crossfire, it does not scale 100%.
I know 9800GX2 is fast in crysis, but it is also 60% more expensive. I like intel motherboards better overal. Since nVidia doesn't support intel motherboards..

Hi.. um Im buying a dell with a ATI Radeon 3870 x2 included.
And I want to buy another for crossfire, but there are many different "brands" like sapphire, his and MSI.
So my question is, is it possible to crossfire a Ati Radeon 3870 x2 with a MSI 3870 x2?
MSI is much cheaper than the other variants, and it seems to good to be true. (twise as cheap)
So does MSI buy their cards from ATI/HMD or is it a ripoff?
SneakyBushman 3 years ago
Yes but I don't recommend to crossfire them. 2x4850 is a more cheaper way and alot of times faster.

Jeebus84 3 years ago
I bought a 280GTX for €339, im happy with it, Sold my 3870X2's :)

I don't know much about ATI cards ,only nvidia - could someone plz tell me what is currently the flagship of the ATI range?
luke246810 3 years ago
The 4870 1GB is the flagship. Soon the 4870X2 is the flagship.

i'm a little new to all this...but my new pc is a intel quad Q9450, Asus p5k something or other, nvidia geforce 9800 gtx, 500g's hard drive, and 4 gigs of 'ddr3'(2?) ram.
so i went out and bought crysis and put the settings to high, with AA at 2x, and had noooo lag, chopiness or any other problem for about an hour and a half, two hours (resolution 1680x1050, 22 inch), then all of a sudden during one of the video scenes it just froze completely and i had to reboot. whew! lol any thoughts?
raptors4444 3 years ago
Since you're pretty new to the PC enthusiast scene, I assume you didn't check the temps. Make sure you have proper cooling and airflow for your systems interior so your video card and/or cpu don't overheat. Make sure the inside of your case is clean, and you have case fans sucking air in the front and out the back. Hope this helps, and, as always NEVER underestimate the power of Google. If you need help on something, looking it up on Google will solve the problem 99% of the time.
generalpsi8 3 years ago
thanks for the help. u were right it was a cooling issue, i've replaced the stock fan with a new better one, and i'm running pc probe to moniter my cpu and motherboard temps...with the thresholds set fairly low.
again thanks so much for the advice.

Any time man. have fun with your new computer! :D
generalpsi8 3 years ago
the problem is that now you can buy 2 4870 and you have twice performance...
nitrogeb 3 years ago
Not twice. For example stalker and supreme command the 3870X2 is faster. Depending on crossfire support. In crysis 3870X2 is half slower, bad crossfire support. And it's not a problem, i already have them a half year. When 4870X2 comes I will buy that, but from 3870X2 to 4870 is not enough for me.
keldererik 3 years ago
crossfire doesn't scale in crysis , did you know that?
MXhm91 3 years ago
It works with r_multigpu 1 in console, did you know that? I sold my crossfire and got 280GTX, did you know that? hehehe
keldererik 3 years ago
I wasn't trying to be rude I was trying to make a question if you knew... lol ... some people are just unhumanly aggresive...
MXhm91 3 years ago
1024x768 to 1680x1050 = 4870
1920x1080 and more = hd3870x2
By the way, iGot 600fps in Counter-Strike SOurce Video Stress test with my setup!!
m4xime90 3 years ago
Yes, the X2 is better than every cad in 4000 series, in high res!
My Spec:
Q6600 Oc to 3.2
4gb ddr2 800mhz corsair twinx
HD3870x2 CFX 2048mo GDDR3
m4xime90 3 years ago
No, the 4870 performs identical, or better, than the HD3870X2 on any given task and especially during heavy filters and such. 3870X2 is usually a very questionable card, especially for the price where it doesn't perform that well nor does it run silent or efficient. Resolution isn't that heavy on the GPU - there's virtually no performance decrease from default to highest resolution using a HD4870 in Unreal 3 games and even World in Conflict.

Im getting this card. Sapphire Radeon HD 3870 1GB GDDR4, PCI-Express 2.0, 2xDVI/HDMI So i wonder what powersupply does it need? /RaZsoR
RaZsoRShArP 3 years ago
450Watt is enough for a system with a single 3870. Even 400Watt would do.
keldererik 3 years ago
but i dont know if that card is crossfireX or normal
RaZsoRShArP 3 years ago
I have the same card and i am using a PC Power and Cooling Crossfire Edition 750W... very pleased so far...

Is a 3870X2 better than a 4850?
MaxiMachine 3 years ago
In some games it is faster. Look up some reviews. Sometimes alot faster and sometimes slower. Depends on crossfire support.
keldererik 3 years ago
that is quiet solution :D

I have about the same video-card setup as you, but my menu opening video and game opening video lag. Do you have the same problem?

hmm no
keldererik 3 years ago
Get a e8400 and overclock it to 4ghz its way better for crysis than any quad. i wish i got a e8400 and oced it to 4.3ghz instead of my 3.8ghz q6600...
bob333336 3 years ago
I have an E8400 as you see on my other movie.
keldererik 3 years ago
ooohh ! because on Asus Website they said Crossfire not CFX .
ty now i know all the EX38 and X48 motherboards supports this technology
MaTaNhy 3 years ago
dude youre motherboard doesnt support CFX how did you put two HD 3870 X2 ?
MaTaNhy 3 years ago
Because it supports crossfire X :P Every X38/X48 intel chipset does support it. Maybe not on the box but if you look at the compatibility list on ati's website you'll see. It really works :D
keldererik 3 years ago
ya it all x38 x48 p35 and p45 support CF
bob333336 3 years ago
How hot does each graphics card get?
Billyopenedthegate 3 years ago
With the sidepanel closed and default fanspeeds it gets hot. That is because ATI don't really mind about temperature, but more about cus alot of ppl complain about noise. So they are really silent but with 2 of them it's hot. I set fanspeed of 25% to 40% manually. Then they get around 35-40 Degrees Celcius instead of 60-70 degrees. :) And with fan on the back of cards they are around 25-30 degrees. This are all idle temperatures. Ingame they stay cool @ 40% fanspeed.
keldererik 3 years ago
If I don't do anything to the fans and just leave it hot, is there any chance they could burn out or something?
Billyopenedthegate 3 years ago
no, default is fine. Fanspeed will rise automatically when they get too hot. Just ATI cares more about silent cards these days than cool cards :) They take fanspeed down but... that's what you get if people complain about noise.
keldererik 3 years ago
Dude you're insane!!!!! Must've spent 700 € only on your graphics card.
Billyopenedthegate 3 years ago
wtf 700€??? in finland hd3870x2 is about 350€..
4nt1pr0 3 years ago
3870X2 x2 = 2 cards.
€350 x 2 = €700.
keldererik 3 years ago
well i think the game is running quite smooth when is the hd 4870x2 cuming
fahast 3 years ago
a lot of lag for that kind of system and i think that the video cards are not the guilty
when u have a system like that u HAVE to use
RAID 0 configuration with 2 western digital
320 to get speed and also a quad core OC up to 3.2 minimun and also a good rams...
u cant just have 2 video cards when the rest of the system bottleneck them.... bye!
i hope u read this , this was SK8 /sk827015
sk827015 3 years ago
Dude I have a new CPU running @ 4GHz, check my other videos. Crysis has no advantage of quadcore. My rams are good and I have raid0 so what is your point?
keldererik 3 years ago
Crysis take a lot of advantage of Quad core... it is programed to be a multi treath aplication so it uses the 4 cores...the diferecen between a Quad core runing at 4GHZ
and a Dual core Runint at the same speed on crysis is huge about 10-20 fps more and thats a lot , my point was that ,u cant have a good GPU and a bad CPU ect... because it
will bottleneck the entire system
sk827015 3 years ago
no, you're wrong. tests have been done and they all show no benefit for quad cores over dualies. i have a dual core E8400 @ 4.0 and Crysis only runs my CPU at an average of 60%. it really isn't that CPU-dependent.
T2DMrBungle 3 years ago
You are really wrong, have you even checked out the benchmark link i gave you about crysis on quad vs dual? I guess not or else you wouldn't have commented here again.

bierbram 3 years ago
yeah but ati hd4870 x2 GDDR5 is comming out soon.
scanneri123 3 years ago
No,
The 4870 is comming out soon, the X2 will have to wait. Just like with the 3870 and much later the 3870X2.. I think it will take like 4 or 5 more months before you will see the X2 version.
keldererik 3 years ago
No va fluido con esos dos pepinacos? no me mola nada ese crossfire :(
Dagmachine 3 years ago
are thoes the 1gb cards each?
marc4life22 3 years ago
yes. 4 gpu's, 4x512MB, makes 2048MB GGDR3.
keldererik 3 years ago
Oh Keldererik ignore the nvidia fan boys. Crysis is NOT optimized for nvidia cards. If it was cryengine 2 would be using OpenGL. It is optimized using DirectX API's. Last time I noticed DirectX doesn't favor specific cards. Trust me on the AA thing tho. High end gaming doesn't require AA at all. AA is mostly for low res to smooth out jaggies.
Alwa7sh94 is a troll btw so ignore that fool.
outpostprime 3 years ago
but it is optimized for nvidia they said it in an interview while showing the game off for first time and even then they were using 2x 8800Ultras to run it proparly.
godseesnocolour 3 years ago
I now have the E8400 in this system running on 4005MHz with 1.3Vcore. 4320MHz 3dmark06 stable at 1.4Vcore = 21297
keldererik 3 years ago
Keldererik I have a true crossfirex rig. The x2 is close in performance but its about 10% lower on crysis for w/e reason so I returned it. It might be because of the GDDR4 ram or x2 bridge chip. I run at 1680x1050 and get like 45~60. What I do is just turn off AA. When running at resolutions over 1440 you get a natural AA effect. Turning on AA at those resolutions does nothing other then smooth out the screen. Try it out. I'm 100% sure you'll be impressed by the speed increase and sharpness.
outpostprime 3 years ago
The little bit of lag was also a result of my slow cpu (E6600), it's very awesome now with the E8400 on 4GHz. :) Crossfire X favors a fast cpu.
keldererik 3 years ago
the only reason the 3870x2 produces such poor framerates is because Crysis is optimized for nvidia cards. if it weren't, the 3870x2 would probably make 50+fps on maxed out everything
kevinsupra90 3 years ago
hi mate i am gettin a 3870x2 to xfire with my 3870xt is their any probs wit xfire i should b aware of..... see a bloke have problem with post acpi - pci load up post. all info be wicked dude also what case you got them in im going to be installin in a thermaltake soprano case, sound vid by way
speeddemony2k7 3 years ago
Just be sure your motherboard has the latest bios. What motherboard do you have btw? Some don't work with crossfireX like the P5B Deluxe I had, sold it and got myself the asus P5E (X38).
keldererik 3 years ago
im runnin a p5b deluxe too LOL, but seem to be havin problem with temps on it with my q6600 and saph 3870xt etc. but (de-ja-voo) i gettin the x38 p5e also. any glitches with xfire?
speeddemony2k7 3 years ago
Only XP has glitches with xfire, you need to run vista for sure :P 4 gpu's will never work in xp. Other than that I have everything running great.
keldererik 3 years ago
i mainly run xp for gaming instead of vista did you come across any probs wen did xfire please? and ill be runin 3 gpu's 1 X2 and 1 3870 XT
speeddemony2k7 3 years ago
XP dont work with 3 or 4 gpu's. Also crysis has some bugs with crossfire that i read about. Some people get worse performance with multi gpu in crysis. Im hoping the 8.4 drivers will make everything run smooth.
keldererik 3 years ago
well i mainly game on xp but as i have got a dual boot OS ill try on both cant see why xp would not work with Xfire. thanks for the info but i think that i willl jus try it out for myself. thanks. be sure to chk my other vids and ill post vids of new build next month
speeddemony2k7 3 years ago
I've been testing something today:
ive tested this ingame:
1 GPU = 14 FPS
2 GPU = 23 FPS
4 GPU = 37 FPS
very high dx10 1680x1050
Seems Crossfire X scales pretty good. I was curious cus the crysis benchmark tool didnt show ANY improvement with 2 vs 4 GPU's. So I tested the above myself ingame.. :)
keldererik 3 years ago
get a Nvidia 9800gx2 its about 1.5x better and if you like crysis its 3x better
rockerairsoftman 3 years ago
You can't multiply numbers when you go sli or crossfire, it does not scale 100%.
I know 9800GX2 is fast in crysis, but it is also 60% more expensive. I like intel motherboards better overal. Since nVidia doesn't support intel motherboards..
keldererik 3 years ago
He's right you know.
I have an 8800GT but there is nothing wrong with ATI
just that Crysis is optimized for nVidia
jonnierekkisvalur 3 years ago 2
The 3870 core is a 55nm process. The 9800 has a 65nm process. The 3870 is actually smaller and more power efficient.
keldererik 3 years ago
Very nice setup. How do you like the Crossfire setup over all? I heard it scales pretty good in most games.
