You've all been bamboozled! For all of their creativity, someone told them that it was ok to re do Bo Diddley's song 'I'm A Man' while failing to properly credit the original author.
Yes, there are multiple versions of the musical Smokey Joe's Cafe which is the performance of multiple songs written by Lieber and Stroller who wrote this song for her. Do you listen to blues?
i was saying that this is the original when you said you liekd the original version
and then when you said we should look at the smokey joe's cafe musical version you failed to specify which version coz there are millions of smokey Joe's cafe versions of every song on youtube
This is a nicely different way to interpret a song that is not a blues number anyway. By the way, it's not such a good idea to insult the singing of professionals when you have put your own amateur singing videos on YouTube. I went to listen to one of them, and ... well, no comment, except good luck with that.
One of the classiest legendary singers to grace the music scene. This old clip loses nothing of the artist at work. Style grace, incredible timing. God bless you golden tones Miss Lee...you are missed.
Lee had far more than ability, she was a great musician, just as one can tell when listening to Chet Baker or Holiday sing a tune. They are Musicians who also happen to sing extremely well. This has more to do with Lee's talent, charisma, poise and magic. The other doesn't come close to her,in any of these,I doubt she'll approach it in her lifetime.I don't see this as anything bad, for folks like Lee, Holiday, Garland, Chet Baker are 'originals' not flash-in-the-pan, TV fake reality show creations.
plus, this clip lacks a bit in the audio department, listen to Lee's version on cd. Just as Madonna's tame attempt at a re-do of "Fever" fizzled, for Dolittle it's back to the drawlin' board.
Yeah but Peggy wrote the lyrics to this song, and she pretty much only sang her own music, so i guess if she wrote it, she couls sing it any way she wanted...
Actually Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller wrote this song. They also wrote Is That All There Is? for her. I'm not familiar with too much of her other music but I know those two were Leiber and Stoller songs (Leiber and Stoller wrote hundreds of songs in the 60's such as Stand By Me, Poison Ivy, On Broadway, Jailhouse Rock, etc. Look em up. its interesting)
Who would compare anyone to Miss Lee singing this song? Her performance of this song is iconic in its status. They couldn't hold her a light. Purrleeezzzz
Nope,...Doliittle's approach is only louder, and her treatment far overdone, as per most of her stuff. I guess that's what 'sells stuff' to todays 'Merkin Idol types. Sad. Let's just say before Donuthin' could come up with a better cover of ANY of Miss Lee's stuff,...it'll be a cold day in hell.
Maria Mulduar's version is MUCH better. Little Willie John's original version of FEVER is much better than Ms Lee's talk through version. Her voice is so limited one wonders why she choose singing as a profession. I guess she was the Madonna of her era.
why would you even compare Melinda and Peg? This is Peg's song, and the two sang it completely different. Melinda is show=offy Mariah/Christina crap, and Peg's is the real jazz stuff. Melinda should be so grateful to sing Peg's stuff.
Uhm....you should hear Melinda Doolittle from American Idol do it. Truly...one of the first times I've EVER said a REMAKE was BETTER than the original!
You don't understand the beauty of Peggy Lee and her art... One can argue melinda did a better I'm a woman or that Paris Bennet did a better Fever but this was a song for the times... Very understated and cool (with a capital C)... This is a classic jazz act... I'd say among the four greatest Jazz vocalists with Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Ray Charles.

See - Smokey Joe's Cafe

@blackcrystal25
you do realise that peggy Lee wrote the song, this is the original how it was created
you do also realise that Smokey Joe's Cafe is a musical and that there are a million "i'm a woman" versions from the musical on youtube
and finally
do you listen to Jazz?
Because singers in Jazz tend to not hold time, that was a technique a singer used to make a tune "Jazzier" many soloists do it as well
which taken in context to when the song was released it was normal
