My view on the whole ordeal is that genres are too various now to even categorize bands. There is so much versatility that no one really fits into just one genre anymore. Now it's easier to classify a band by saying "They sound like -soandsoband-" rather than trying to describe their genre.

And the big difference between Avril Lavigne and No Use For A Name is Avril Lavigne was assembled by the record company to sell records. Take a look at NUFAN. They're on Fat Wreck Chords. No one has ever had a gold record from that label. They've been on Fat since 1992, well before they were assembling punk bands.

I think you kind of lose all credibility as a pop-'punk' band once the only thing that connects you to the original punk movement is your use of three chords in a song.
