Dear friend, if you want to listen to this song again as well as an endless number of love songs I suggest you visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - look for the URL in Google (search Musica para Mimos). Greatest romantic hits of all times!!!
First CD I bought was Simon and Garfunkel's greatest hits 10 or so years ago. This was my favorite song. Made me cry to hear him say "I was just my father's son"
@buyerofsorts Pretty much. That's how everyone saw him walking down the street and how he was introduced to company. "This is my son" instead of "This is Paul" kind of thing.
@M1t20 Just curious as to why that bothered you so much? I'm not saying it shouldn't have or anything like that. Just wondering why it bugged you. I think most fathers introduce their sons like that no?
@buyerofsorts It was one of the first times I heard a song that meant something to me... like he was singing about me and knew how I felt. I was only 11 or 12 at the time and had never read poetry. The whole song gets to me just those words sum up the entire feeling of what its like to live in a small town and be a boy. He is only his fathers son until he becomes a man. Do you know his relationship with his father? When Paul would show him the songs he wrote?
@M1t20 Do I know what Paul's relationship was with his Dad? I don't know much but from what I've read, his Dad was very encouraging and complimentary towards Paul and his songs/singing. Why?
Why was it such a bummer for you to live in a small town? Did you have trouble with you're Dad not giving you enough credit? If so, thats very common between fathers and sons.
@buyerofsorts I guess I'll need to read up.. I heard his father didn't think he'd be able to do anything with his songs.. regardless: I have a great relationship with my dad. Living in a small town is great. You know your friends and their families, but there's nothing but the dead and dying there. I have NYC dreams
@M1t20 I don't know for sure. Maybe he didn't... I'm moving to a small town soon and beleive it or not, theres a hell of a lot more to do out there than there is here in Phoenix, AZ. What state do you live in? NYC would probably be pretty cool while you're young. Then as you get older, you may want to go back to the small town. :)
@cireboers You are right, it's one of a few of their songs that is almost magical, it's enchanting. Just today I discovered it on a really old CD and played it maybe 20 times over in the car on a trip. Now I am checking it out on youtube....what's with that ??
When I was a kid, my mom and I used to play this song all the time on the jukebox at the Kings Arms Diner on Staten Island. What an amazing song. So hauntingly beautiful.
It does not cease to amaze me that songs like this have only gained meaning and importance as it ages. This song makes a statement that those, especially from that era, should be able to identify. Our little towns were our neighborhoods no matter where you were from.
Mom did her laundry and hung out the shirts.
Our dads worked in the factories that have now disappeared.
We can't escape from those times. We don't want to.
I was in East Chicago, Ind. a few weeks back. The steel mill there was just sitting there rusting and empty. That way of life has disappeared. This song keeps replaying in my head when I see that mental picture.
I will call it a masterpiece. Their best. I just saw Paul perform this without Art. Not a problem.
I don't like this one. The only living boy's a much better song. It may in fact be a masterpiece. I am just a poor boy though my story's also very good.
@dagoninfinite The only living boy in New York is a great song as well, but for me this one means soo much.It reminds me of my childhood,my friends& family that I have not seen since then(The "golden" days, haha).
I think that's whats amazing about Paul Simon & Art Garfunkel songs, every one of them bring a memory and feeling attached to it.simply amazing artists.Cheers!
at the end of my street was a factory, two buildings with a high-level walkway, I used to fly my bike past the gate, this song means so much to me and my childhood memories!
@LiveCrueltyFreeNow Paul Simon is a master of writing about the everyday things that fill our lives. In the 60's while others were writing about "girl meets boy, fall in love, yeh yeh yeh.", he was writing about about two old men who spent their days sitting on a park bench. Unless I'm wrong, "He leaned upon me, while I pledged allegance to the wall" is a reference of the sense of duty placed upon American children reciting their allegance to the flag every morning in school. Just a guess.
One of the most perfectly crafted songs EVER... The imagery in Paul Simon's lyrics is stunningly beautiful and the harmonies are achingly gorgeous. Unsurpassable in my humble opinion.
@FOOFOOKITTY@FOOFOOKITTY And you must have asked you'rself, "How in the world was I not aware of this song"!?!?!? Right? As for Paul being brilliant, hes one of the many things in my life ( I'm 45. ) that have perplexed me as to how he did it. What a shame hes mostly forgotten after only a generation. I feel hes the best singer/songwriter/musician in history. Well, back to work. :)
@buyerofsorts I DID!! I couldn't believe I'd never heard it! As for Simon's brilliance ... it's like ALL brilliance - a gift. I think this song says volumes about Simon's ambition and resentment at what he considered the dead condition of his "little town!" People wonder about his relationship with his father - who knows if it was good or bad - Simon's just angered that he's nobody but his "father's son" in this place. He's nobody in his "little town." Angry, beautiful, brilliant!
@FOOFOOKITTY But Paul grew up in New York and then spent a lot of time in London. Perhaps while touring, he ran into some people in smaller towns that he thought were prety lame and therefore came up with "Dead and dying". I used to live in a small town called Deming in New Mexico and I'll tell ya, most of the people there were happy to work at Burger King their entire lives and go nowhere and do nothing. I always read that his relationship with his Dad was pretty good actually. Continued below.
@FOOFOOKITTY Regardless if Paul actually experienced what he wrote about in that song, he did embody the feelings of a lot of people that have big ambitions and are somewhat "stuck" in a small town. My girlfriend felt that way growing up in Cold Water Mi. And I agree, the song is angry, beautiful and brilliant! :)
@buyerofsorts I didn't know where or how Paul Simon grew up, but IF he grew up as you say then his ability to so poignantly express the emotions of someone struggling IN one and desperately wanting out ... well, we already agreed this is brilliant!
I wonder if this would have been a hit if Paul Simon did it on his own.
It's a powerful song. But I doubt that it would have cracked the top 10 if it weren't a "Simon and Garfunkel" song. Paul's pop success notwithstanding.
There's something about the way their voices blend that transforms their simple harmony into the Voice.
And it's a damn shame that they didn't own the '70s
@platypus1ful Agree 100%,it's surprising how Paul&Art are now much less popular then the big names of the era.I mean, their music just pulsates with feeling and talent!

Played this for the bell at school.
I knew it, but didnt know the name or the artists (SHAME!).
Then I looked up the lyrics, ONE OF THE BEST SONGS!!!!
At school they also played When I'm 64, which didnt make much sense for a school, but that doesnt stop me from singing and getting weird looks
