And what's with all the shit generalizations? Plenty of gamers have heard about Psychonauts, and plenty of gamers have seen more movies than just LotR and Star Wars.
Aah Psychonauts... One of the finest games i've ever played, not only the writing is good, but also the gameplay is very solid and the art direction is fantastic.
dan, unlikely you'll read this message but if you do please answer , i noticed on your other videos you said you sped up your voice to fit the timeframe, but i noticed at the end of this video you said that was inspired by the great Mr Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw,(which i have to say before you pointed it out i didnt really notice), my question is did you speed up your voice in a effort to be more like ben or was it really just for the timeframe?
@deafweasel99 He mentioned on the Q&A last night that the original idea was intended to be a ZP homage, but when he finished the first video, it came in at very slightly over 10 minutes (which was a strict time limit). Instead of editing and rerecording, he just sped the whole video up.
Shadow of the colasis, Super paper Mario, Mother 3 I cant sit through a game unless it has a point I want to show this to my teacher... VIDEO GAMES ARE ART and I think they should be treated as such. Im glad someone agrees...
It's kind of sad, but Extra Credits does hit true. There have been games with fantastic storytelling that didn't sell well at all. I've been playing Arcanum: of Steamworks and Magick Obscura, and the writing in that game is fantastic, but I never would have heard of it if it weren't for the fact that I just happened to play turn-based games.
problem is, when it comes to video games, you need about 4 different factors to be good for the game to be good, like audio, visuals, story AND gameplay. for books, you only need a good story and characters that the reader will care about. for movies, its the same as video games only to which its not interactive. that makes writing a story for a video game different and thus more difficult
Now at days, there are many games that has good story and good gameplay, like Mass Effect, Fallout 3, Half-Life 2. But this video is kinda old, and things have changed.
I think another big problem with story telling in video games is that alot of the more popular long running series are 10 to even 20 years old and some of or all of the original creators have left and the new/remaining creators changed what was originally intended for the story and sometimes it takes a turn for the worst. (Depending on the fans and what they like.) Mortal Kombat and Resident Evil are two examples.
What program did you guys use to make this? i was going to try to make a presentation like this or something similar but i didn't know what program to use, any help you can give me will be awesome, YOU GUYS ARE GREAT
Videos? You can get started with MS Paint + Windows Movie Maker.
Art? You can draw on paper and scan it, or draw on your screen with Paint, Gimp, or Photoshop.
Live presentation? Any slideshow playing software, even the default software that comes with Microsoft Windows called "Picture and Fax Viewer" is capable of displaying your drawings on a screen. Powerpoint is more powerful though.
God of War a well written story driven game? please! It's a story of simple revenge and simple conspiracy of "the bad guy was the good guy all along!". But then agian... that depends what you call a "well written" scenario.
And all this unwillingness to innovate is because this generation has ADHD, E-V-E-R-Y-O-N-E HAS ADHD. They can't go 3 seconds without and explosion or they will get som mental breakdown and die...
Assassins Creed, Mass Effect, Uncharted, Portal, Red Dead Redemption, LA Noire, Fallout 3, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Bastion, Metal Gear Solid 4. These are only just examples of games that have sold well with good story.
@Xdestroyer6 Portal is a great game, but it doesn't really have a story at all. And the story of the main quest of Fallout 3 isn't really good either.
@pifanjr Portal as a series as a constantly developing and improving story. Fallout 3... I enjoyed the farce of the whole thing. The satire. And Liam Neeson is awesome.
@Xdestroyer6 Compared to Mass effect 1 and 2 and Assassin's creed 1, 2 and Brotherhood the stories of Portal and Fallout 3 aren't really that great. Which doesn't mean they aren't enjoyable.

@thewoopdeedoo qwll no actually extra credits stated that the escapist wanted 75% of the LEFTOVER money, which in my opinion is still wrong but from a buisiness standpoint makes perfect sense. Learn before you comment.
@thewoopdeedoo Well, technically they asked for 3/4 of the rollover money that Allison's operation didn't require to help pay for shirts and pub club memberships then got in a legal battle over IP rights.
but, you know, it's more exiting the way you put it...
@thewoopdeedoo The surgery was a $15,000 operation, they raised $80,000. The Escapist supported that fund raiser and requested they use that money to make future episodes. They wanted to take all of it and run. The Escapist is not the bad guy you damn drone.
@DII117 no the escapist wanted to use that money to pay extra credits because they never payed them in a year. We raised that money for Alison surgery. and we kept donating far after it was covered. why? because we supported extra credits plan to help out independent developed games. So yes. trying to using our money to pay of the escapist debt to extra credits and not paying extra credits for year does make that "the bad guys"
@thewoopdeedoo Oh my god is this true D: ? I dearly hope not. If so do you know if they're moving to another site? I would sure hate to lose them. Extra credits is my favorite show on the internet.
@hootllum The have a new YouTube channel called Extra Creditz. It doesn't have the old videos but you can find those all over YouTube. They also recently posted a very moving series of episodes about Game Addiction.
@thewoopdeedoo really? because i went to the escapist a min ago and extra credits is gone. did they realy leave? and did Alison's surgery go ok or did she even get it? please answer thanks
@thewoopdeedoo lies she already had the operation the money was being used for something different funded from the money generated after they had already enough money. The y took advantage of peoples generosity and used the money without asking the funders first or even mentioning they had enough money.
@thewoopdeedoo they tried to say that the 3/4 of the money raised belongs to them, after they didn't pay these guys for months on end. I don't agree with what they tried to do, but don't use hyperbolic words like steal in all caps. Lets all raise above this incident, like James and co. have, and try to avoid a flame war. Is that cool everyone, now lets talk about the potential of games.
Here's the thing, a story in a game really is optional. Unlike films and novels whose entire purpose is tell a story, a game's primary purpose is to entertain with gameplay. That's not to say that we should never see good stories in games, but if a game is good without one, leave it alone. A flashy, well-made, good-looking movie without a story will always be crap. A flashy, well-made, good looking game can be good regardless of its story (or lack thereof).
@laserwolf65 A good point, sir. But when a game actually tries to present a story, shouldn't we expect the same quality as in a movie story? Or did i misinterpret you?
@Xaio30 I guess what I'm saying is that while games that are trying to tell a good story should have their story put into consideration when giving a final score, it seems absurd to me to take that into account when the story is a minor detail. Let me give you an example; I read a review recently for Killzone 3. It said that the graphics were amazing, the multiplayer was good, the single-player campaign was rewarding, and the gameplay was all-around excellent. The final score was 8.5 however.
The reason it got this final score was because "the story was sub-par." I was flabbergasted. I mean, it's apparently a fun and well-made game, and they won't give it a 9 or higher just because the story was "sub-par"? It was a game about shooting Nazi-like aliens for pete's sake. It wasn't trying to tell a deep story, and since (as I stated) games' purpose is to entertain through gameplay (which the reviewer seemed to think it did), I see no reason for the deduction in the final score.
@capturethelife No it wasn't. I own it and while some of the puzzles were frustrating for me, the world, characters, humour, and story were excellent.
This is a reason why I'll buy The Old Republic day 1. I need people to see that throwing tons of money into story and dialogue does contribute to sales.
There's still games that require skill. Just that, like with games that have story, they are overshadowed by what's well known. Even so, most new games that focus on skill seam to have a gimmick attached to them, so it's hard to see how they require skill.
@glorfindew Plus, he actually mentions this in one of the vids (whether its here or at the Escapist, not sure). He states that if they used his normal voice (i.e. not sped up), the series would not be as appealing
Nowadays videogames have FAR better stories than the movie industry will ever hope to have, I know I will get the one movie fan saying, "NO!" but to be quite honest. Why defend such a medium with such crap that will NOT stop coming out. Hell, the entire movie industry still hasn't made a action movie with even 1 inch of depth of MGS in the past 13 years. What hope does it have? Now onto videogames, they certainly have grown up within almost a 10 year time frame almost instantly. Amazing really.
@jayofthe400 Movies are pure storytelling tho. Of course a game that take 55 hours to complete will seem to have better storytelling than a 2hr movie, the shear volume of story that can fit is far greater in a game. While I prefer games as a delivery system to a good story, if you don't have 50+ hrs to kill and wish be watch something enjoyable of similar style in just 1-2 hours, then movies are still useful. Also LOTR movies vs game, no comparison to which is better. Also MGS FTW :)
Daniel Floyd, talk about Exp sharing, and encourage it in MMORPG. So that MMORPG will now use it so that low level players will have fun playing together.
Game Tech has evolved, storytelling in games....not so much. People just take notice of it more now coz it has purdy pictures. If anything, the current market and tech development of games has destroyed games storytelling and overwritten it with movie storytelling + interactiveness. Looking back at crappy graphics now does not mean they did not seem as real as todays when they were released. I remember river raid feeling like 1942 which was like BF1942...
@leonia97 chalk and cheese, original mario game vs new super mario bros, or morrowwind vs oblivion would both be better comparisons. In both cases, they are roughly the same. Do not confuse the limits of technology with bad storytelling. As someone who worked in the games industry for 5 years, I saw a huge tendency to choose a heavily scripted game that pushes the player in the direction they want, instead of allowing freedom of choice. Mainly due to deadlines and profitability.
Awesome presentation, man. Im currently writing a story for a videogame that I genuinely feel will be fun to play and will also make money for the publisher putting money into it. This vid was informative, helped me see things in a clearer perspective and gave me hope for my project. Thanks.
Maybe if people stopped buying pointless, story-less, and "fun-less" games such as Guitar Hero, Rock Band, GTA, and COD (except the old ones with WWI and II), then we could achieve what he's talking about...
@spanishax Normally, things aren't popular because people don't like them. SOMETHING would have to make consumers purchase competitive music, FPS and/or racing games. Unless games are truly awful, they are generally enjoyable and maybe even fun. Playing those games you mentioned are usually mostly about the local multi-player experience anyway. Please don't be so close-minded.
@dimmddr1 Yes, but developers shouldn't put so much emphasis on the multiplayer experience. Yeah, a good FPS game played with some friends online is fun, but it should not be THE main focus of game development. I have put together a team, and we are in the process of making a game; we are mostly centering our energy on the story, and have not even DISCUSSED online play yet.
And I'm sorry, but IMO, Guitar Hero and Rock Band are just awful... It's repetitive button-pressing with music. :/
Okami is a great example for this. Great story, but it didn't sell well before due to the fact that it was released sometime near the release of the XBOX.
I don't know now since MvC3 put Ammy in the game. I guess Okami's getting so much more praise than before now, eh?
Only the first 10 on steam cause lord knows I got plenty of em, and I'm probably removing several from consideration that deserve it. Amnesia the dark descent Braid Deus Ex Deus Ex: Invisible War Jade Empire Myst Monkey Island 2 Portal Psychonauts Riven That was easy.
Psychonauts was a really epic game with memorable characters and good story. The gameplay was fun and adictive too. Its definitely on my top 10 list of best game Ive played

@hootllum The have a new YouTube channel called Extra Creditz. It doesn't have the old videos but you can find those all over YouTube. They also recently posted a very moving series of episodes about Game Addiction.

"Hey, I like this. Where can I find more?"
"We've moved to the Escapist!"
"Oh, good! I'll just"
"DO NOT GO TO THE ESCAPIST! THEY STOLE ALISON'S ARM MONEY FOR THE OPERATION!"
"WATAFAK"
Thanks for making me laugh. Cheers!

@thewoopdeedoo God does the escapist look like an enormous douche of a website right now.
Even if they didn't need most of it for the operation, wheren't they giving the rest to charity anyway?
They have no reason to take that money.
Even if they had the legal authority to do so.
People willingly donated that money to a good cause, and it should all go to at least one.
They did not pay the escapist to piss money away on shit no one watches.
Yahtzee is the only reason that site exists.
Chayraz2 4 months ago
@thewoopdeedoo lies she already had the operation the money was being used for something different funded from the money generated after they had already enough money. The y took advantage of peoples generosity and used the money without asking the funders first or even mentioning they had enough money.

@thewoopdeedoo What OMG is that why they moved!!!!!! where are extra credits stationed now?
Jakey113G 4 months ago
@thewoopdeedoo they tried to say that the 3/4 of the money raised belongs to them, after they didn't pay these guys for months on end. I don't agree with what they tried to do, but don't use hyperbolic words like steal in all caps. Lets all raise above this incident, like James and co. have, and try to avoid a flame war. Is that cool everyone, now lets talk about the potential of games.

this sounds difficult since most people don't seem to give a crap about story at all.

A flashy, well-made, good looking game can be good regardless of its story (or lack thereof).
laserwolf65 6 months ago
@laserwolf65 A good point, sir. But when a game actually tries to present a story, shouldn't we expect the same quality as in a movie story? Or did i misinterpret you?
Xaio30 6 months ago
@Xaio30 I guess what I'm saying is that while games that are trying to tell a good story should have their story put into consideration when giving a final score, it seems absurd to me to take that into account when the story is a minor detail. Let me give you an example; I read a review recently for Killzone 3. It said that the graphics were amazing, the multiplayer was good, the single-player campaign was rewarding, and the gameplay was all-around excellent. The final score was 8.5 however.
laserwolf65 6 months ago
The reason it got this final score was because "the story was sub-par." I was flabbergasted. I mean, it's apparently a fun and well-made game, and they won't give it a 9 or higher just because the story was "sub-par"? It was a game about shooting Nazi-like aliens for pete's sake. It wasn't trying to tell a deep story, and since (as I stated) games' purpose is to entertain through gameplay (which the reviewer seemed to think it did), I see no reason for the deduction in the final score.
laserwolf65 6 months ago
That being said, if you're making a Final Fantasy or Heavy Rain, the story should be scrutinized.
laserwolf65 6 months ago
@laserwolf65 Then I fully agree with your statement. =)
Thanks for elaborating.

@okami7amaterasu no it's a fact, anything that scores above 70% in review scores is a good game and since most j-rpg's score that they are good games
nightmareofkaitos 6 months ago
@okami7amaterasu you clearly never played some of the BEST PC games mentioned in this video :
Grim Fandango, The Longest Journey, Deus Ex, System Shock 2, Half Life.

But The Longest Journey is on a list of things I'm after once I can afford it.

@okami7amaterasu you should consider buying Grim Fandango as well, it wasn't a shooter game.

@capturethelife No it wasn't. I own it and while some of the puzzles were frustrating for me, the world, characters, humour, and story were excellent.

If I want a story I will read a book. I would prefer games that need skill will come back. But I guess that is long gone.
deckkie 6 months ago
@deckkie
There's still games that require skill. Just that, like with games that have story, they are overshadowed by what's well known. Even so, most new games that focus on skill seam to have a gimmick attached to them, so it's hard to see how they require skill.

Amazing really.
jayofthe400 7 months ago
@jayofthe400 Movies are pure storytelling tho. Of course a game that take 55 hours to complete will seem to have better storytelling than a 2hr movie, the shear volume of story that can fit is far greater in a game. While I prefer games as a delivery system to a good story, if you don't have 50+ hrs to kill and wish be watch something enjoyable of similar style in just 1-2 hours, then movies are still useful. Also LOTR movies vs game, no comparison to which is better. Also MGS FTW :)

Video games have trying to tell stories for many many many years. Some of the greatest storytelling games is on Super Nintendo
Singformefriend 8 months ago
Game Tech has evolved, storytelling in games....not so much. People just take notice of it more now coz it has purdy pictures. If anything, the current market and tech development of games has destroyed games storytelling and overwritten it with movie storytelling + interactiveness. Looking back at crappy graphics now does not mean they did not seem as real as todays when they were released. I remember river raid feeling like 1942 which was like BF1942...

@kosilveriarn Whhat game do you think has a better story elder scrolls or The original mario game
leonia97 7 months ago
@leonia97 chalk and cheese, original mario game vs new super mario bros, or morrowwind vs oblivion would both be better comparisons. In both cases, they are roughly the same. Do not confuse the limits of technology with bad storytelling. As someone who worked in the games industry for 5 years, I saw a huge tendency to choose a heavily scripted game that pushes the player in the direction they want, instead of allowing freedom of choice. Mainly due to deadlines and profitability.

Maybe if people stopped buying pointless, story-less, and "fun-less" games such as Guitar Hero, Rock Band, GTA, and COD (except the old ones with WWI and II), then we could achieve what he's talking about...
BioWare is what you want. Or Valve.
spanishax 9 months ago
@spanishax Normally, things aren't popular because people don't like them. SOMETHING would have to make consumers purchase competitive music, FPS and/or racing games. Unless games are truly awful, they are generally enjoyable and maybe even fun. Playing those games you mentioned are usually mostly about the local multi-player experience anyway. Please don't be so close-minded.
dimmddr1 8 months ago
@dimmddr1 Yes, but developers shouldn't put so much emphasis on the multiplayer experience. Yeah, a good FPS game played with some friends online is fun, but it should not be THE main focus of game development. I have put together a team, and we are in the process of making a game; we are mostly centering our energy on the story, and have not even DISCUSSED online play yet.
And I'm sorry, but IMO, Guitar Hero and Rock Band are just awful... It's repetitive button-pressing with music. :/
spanishax 8 months ago
@spanishax I concur with some of your points yet we both have our own opinions, so lets agree to disagree.
