So if you pick one of the Trainer's pokemon, I'm assuming you lose the ability to switch. What does his down-b turn into?

The same, he still has the ability to change. But in Brawl+, the Pokemon have infinite stamina, meaning that if they same Pokemon is in for say, 2 minutes, it won't get weakened, but in normal Brawl, it would get massively weakened. And you don't switch out when you die, so you can main a single Pokemon, like Squirtle.

I'm guessing that if people like starting with a random Pokemon, they pick the Trainer. It's easier anyways over going all the way back to your character, picking Squirtle, then starting again.

Because B+ gives you the ability from picking a single pokemon or all of them.

By picking one of the pokemon alone, you cant swap, but you only stay that pokemon.

By picking PT, you get access to all pokemon, but you auto swap on death.
