As a cat man, I sure appreciated this opening as I had an all black short haired tom, "Marshall McLuhan" in the late 60s. My younger sister has several black toms and they are great affectionate pets.
Stunning sequence; black cat smoothly slinking against a cool jazz background. I saw this when I was a little kid and didn't know what a lesbian was or a prostitute...but I got the music....one day of praying and six days of having fun.
Two for the price of one: Bass paired with the great (and just slightly underrated) Elmer Bernstein...you can't lose. Bass with Alex North. Bass with Bernard Herrman. What a world.
Saul Bass was truly a genius when it came to designing movie titles! I've always loved the opening & closing of this film...which is actually much better than the rest of the movie! Someone once told me he remembers a scene where bordello madam Barbara Stanwyck spanks one of her "girls" (Capucine) - who she has a lesbian crush on - but I don't recall any such scene. In any case, THANKS for posting! Cheers! :-)
One of Stanwyck's best movies. Capucine was spectacularly beautiful. Fonda superb.

The film is a real good one. I don't understand this pick-eaters that tells to everybody that the movie is boring.

I remember seeing this film in '62. I was so knocked out by the opening title sequence that the film itself was a disappointment.

Love the Bass title credits with the Bernstein open and Benton close. I only wish your recording hadn't stepped on the first bar or two. ;-)

Ah Jane Fonda... Before she became one of the most hated people in America.

Oh, this is a new version, thanks.
Just incredible to me the patience involved to film the cat and the steady camera 3 inches off the deck.

once youve seen the start & end title the bit in between is not worth wasting your time watching, unless you wish to die of bordom
