  • I wouldve given anything to know Hunter Thompson. He was a one of a kind genius. It seems he died to early but it was on his terms and its what he wanted so I respect that. Ill never stop learning from the great doctor. Im sure itll be a challenge but RIP Dr. Gonzo

  • @NumbAsAStatue27 I agree with you here I wish i could have met him. If only for a brief hi how are ya sit back and have a turkey on the rocks and talk about the wicked world full of fiends. DR. Gonzo will be missed but Never forgotten .

  • This is fucking hilarious.

  • It's fun to listen to Thompson's senseless ramblings. But at length you can't escape the fact that HST proves "the mind is a terrible thing to waste" (or get wasted). What he did to his mind and writing through drugs exceeds what Hemingway did through alcohol. And it took them both to the same end.

If only HST had grown out of the drugs and booze (assuming all the tales are true)? I'm a fan, but his end was is pure tragedy. He should be on the Sunday News shows now, not pushing up daisies.

  • @mccheese0 Hunter's suicide wasn't drug addled at the time. He just didn't want to grow old. It is an extraordinary tragedy, but it was what he wanted.

  • @TheAlternaBarbie Yeah, I understand what you're saying, but I'll voice the unpopular view that his suicide went past the natural limits of personal freedom. Of course, that's maybe what we expect of HST. Still it's a shame. He had so much yet to contribute to his country, not to mention his fans and family (not necessarily in that order). Like Hemingway, he died before his time and seemingly on an impulse. So sad. He made so much sense beneath all his crazy behavior.

  • WINNING

  • raoul duke is back!

  • I love u my darling xxx

  • i look up to Johnny wow how can one man have so much knowledge and wisdom...

  • what is he talking about?? haha if HST was to say this aloud you wouldnt understand a single word. thats why his writing is fantastic and there is no others like him.

  • hell Johnny life alone would make a hell of a documentary in and of itself.

  • Depp does not sound like Thompson, Bill Murray truly captured his essence.

  • How can someone dislike this!??

  • What is it about those Kentucky boys?

  • This is pretty much just as amazing as Fear and Loathing itself. If Johnny Depp hasn't recorded an audio book out of Fear and Loathing, he fucking should.

  • 3:03 "Oh god Henry!" Who is HST talking about here?

  • A small part od Depp will always be Hunter

  • Screw all of the people who became fans of Depp after the movies he made after Pirates of the Caribbean. Like this if you've seen What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Ed Wood, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, or even frickin' Edward Scissorhands.

  • His words are like wine. A prolific American writer.

  • @Mr001alpa Sit the fuck down and shut the fuck up, Once you are as much of a legend as The Good Dr you can then stand up and speak again, You fucking tool!

  • @Mr001alpa You my friend, have a classic case of over emphasizing nothing and believing it to be something. The nothing I refer to is the brain lodged in between those two useless ears that should be used to coalesce some form of feeble intelligence, but rather you have used your nothingness to form a brand of ignorance seen and used by many. Look into the words of man, into the message of a man, specifically Hunter S. Thompson, and you will seen something weird to live, and too rare to die.

  • i hope he some day stop smoke like a chimeney ;( he stoped almost two years but now is again.. first time he smokes was when he was 12 years old.. i cannot imagine he's so healty but please stop it, his voice he is voice is so sexy, Lily and Jack are so lucky (if when they was child he reads them books ;) )

  • *-* I love his.. Voice <33

Wuaaahh, just like in sweeney todd, the way he sings, is amazing <333

it sounds so darkly, in sweeney todd *-* and, really, really sexy *-*

    Wuaaah, Jeah @ EdwardScissorhands,

Jeah, my opinion too, and.. just see his perso nin real life.. will .. i dont know.. i will faint when i would see him or something :O :3

  • I love the way he reads.. :))

    Johnny forever :*

  • These criminal psychopaths that have hijacked our country are murdering Americans to avoid losing power and prosecution. You had no idea how much time he had left.

  • Why can't we all be real people instead of cardboard cutouts that look like real people? Hunter was a real person; is a real person. He cared enough to know how important it was to find the truth and save the world from the liars of Hell. Hunter was about to put a very big crack in a not very well made wall of lies. They murdered him to stop his light from ruining their perfect darkness. We need to know the Truth and lose all sense of fear before it's too late.

  • @TruthInjector "They murdered him to stop his light from ruining their perfect darkness". Thompson took his own life man. Don't project your own lies.

  • @TruthInjector he lived a long life and did a lot of drugs, he probably didn't have much time left anyway. Carlin died of a heart attack and that seems like Carlin, shooting himself seems like Hunter.

  • where did you find this? I'd really like to know.

  • @themetalman3

These are all special features on the collectors edition DVDs of Fear and Loathing.

  • Johnny Depp reads fucking well

  • @Pornycionado he's an actor...............

  • Reminds me of some of my writing, the cadence, sarcasm and love of words. I am no HST, HST is dead, long live HST...

  • ive been looking for thompson audio books, because i think the voice adds a whole new dimension to the writing, and not one i could find was narrated by depp, who has the best Thompson voice

    dafuck? lets make it happen

  • Comment removed

  • Check out the official trailer to the rum diary on my page its got a great song over it that is apparently going to be in the film

  • anybody know what year this is?

  • hunter s thompsons work is eargasm in its fullest form

  • I didn't understand a word of any of that....

  • This prophesy is ungodly and unclaimed mayhem that will only be seen through the eyes of some chosen few that have touched the tips of the holiest foresaken ghost that we all lay claim to know. Yee haw shoots gawd damn lets git it awn!

  • His face just kind of sums it all up at 4:29, doesn't it?

  • This is just........ amazing. Great writing by Hunter, Depp is a great actor even when he's not acting.

  • Ele é MARA!!!! Abalou! ;*

  • i really dig shit like this johnny depp is one of the best actors period! a non-conformist like me from 21 jumpstreet to edward schissorhands to ed wood to fear and loathing to captain jack sparrow rock on man!

  • rape charges is annoying to hear more than like 2 times in one letter.

  • the true thing i like about this guy , this actor... is that he hasn't lost his way of being , i bet he loves drugs too haha. btw thanks drugs

  • cool.. hunter was right about Muhammad ali... the best!!

  • this depp readin hunter thing, like the vegas movie, is so eerily hypnotic....

  • what the fuck Hunter, what the fuck, Mohamad was a promtional white wash. I have no faith in mr. ali, see the real story, the real hero and it wasn't him.

    Miss you hunter.

  • nice vid man

  • He do the back voice in the new THE DOORS documentary

  • depp is one best actors of all times.. i think .. and thompson .. c you when i get there

  • Probably has been asked before. But when was this recorded? It's brilliant!

  • One of the great HST I've heard write. Kills me that he ended the first page 'where does your mother live' and (pause) on the next page, goes on to something harmless.

  • lolol his face at the end (:

  • If you fuckheads need a Gonzo fix, try:

Gonzo, Gonzo, All Fall Down (Kindle edition)

    Review:

". . . reads like Thompson if he was writing his main body of work today and not 35 years ago. . . . it's mostly laugh out loud funny."

    Paper edition titled:

A Million Little Pieces of Feces

  • I was at the event Thompson's writing about. Depp looked very irritated to be there. It's nice to finally understand why. I believe the "Dotson" he's referring to had already passed away, but his son may have been the police chief at the time.

  • Buy the ticket, take the ride ~ HST

  • holy fuck, i still cant beleive HST is dead...

there will never be another, for he was a freak. a mutation. to strange to live, but to rare to die...

  • the time will come where everyone who knows the brand will have to show it.

a put up or shut up situation.

the swine are killing everything within their terrible gaze.

  • His voice is amazing!!!!!! ;)

  • Lost poets, Dead dogs, Swimming Barracudas, Float your diseased bodys and comatosed minds down to

Kerou(.)net for a shock back into a might be reality.

  • Hunter S. Thompson, what a fucking genious you were..

And Depp (although I don't really care for him as an actor) has the perfect voice for reading his letters.

  • its because he sounds like thompson naturally

  • @squidgyskankout kinda but nobody gets to be thompson without a serious undertaking.

  • 3:54-4:17 fucking brilliant

  • wow. this is amazing. also i love that he looks the same still!

  • Awesome. Sorry, but is anyone else findin this a tad quiet??? I can barely hear it!! And no, it aint my computer, I just checked. WHY so quiet???

  • Are you fucking retarded? Turn your speakers up.

  • oh god, how I would have loved to get a letter like that!

  • is there anything johnny isn't good at? He's so talented! And so many things amazing about him, his voice... ahh... I used to think , or err, still think he isn't human... uh, you all think I'm a nut now! Oh well. He's just so perfect :)

  • for the love of god, STOP

  • stop what?

  • anyone that can sound that much like hunter s thompson without trying...has got some talent haha

  • mmmm... I could listen to him all day :)

  • its so amazing to hear him read its all i want in life for him to read me to sleep

  • Wow...Johnny sure can read...daiiimmm...he got so into it and never messed up...I could practice reading a letter like that many many times and would still probably mess up at some point, but he just did it flawlessly with so much feeling....and I love it when he says "fucking"....ah Johnny....<333333333333

  • This is brilliant, thank you for sharing this wonderful rare video.

  • depp was obsessed with Hunter and even lived with him for a while during he peak of their friendship. it's easy to see how much depp has learned from hunter and how much influence he has taken from him

  • Yes. Johnny and Hunter: Best Friends Forever!

Hunter may be gone, but he still inspires Johnny from Heaven. :)

  • Exactly, perfect opinion :)

  • heaven? really?

  • good shit.. anyone care to explain it?

  • maybe its like you can understand it how you like it! :D

  • OMG its just like a scene from the film. 10/10.

  • I love Fear and Loathing it gets more hilarious everytime I watch it.

  • How about reading it?

  • Why is this on my comments?

  • fear and loathing in las vegas was a book written by hunter s thompson....then it was turned into the movie

  • now THAT was writing

    we miss you thompson

  • Is that smoke from a cigarette or a spliff?

Depp is truly a great actor!

RIP Hunter we will mis your wisdom your panache and your way to se through the hypocritical lies that sorrounds us

  • probably a cigarette

  • dunno why he got thumbed down.

a spliff wouldnt stay lit for that long.

    im sure he smokes weed.. but not every smoking object around him has to be a spliff people (;

  • Hey, a well-rolled spliff might stay lit that long. But Depp's pretty well-established as a smoker, so I'd imagine it's just a cigarette.

  • I love Johnny's slight headshake and smile in the end - he loves it

  • wow this is a great video

  • god dammit i wish i received letters like that. forced into the journalism business? that's the best punishment i've ever heard of! that should totally replace the death sentence.

  • Thanks for uploading this, it made my day. Depp's bemused expression after finishing it says it all--whatta guy Hunter must have been to know.

  • The man was a poet, albeit a twisted one =D

  • Hunter Rip, Good job jonny.

  • I believe this was a little helper from Thompson...gave Depp a little bit of feel for how he really is - Thompson might have figured Depp is used to translating emotion from writings

  • haha I love this stuff. Thompson knew how to write a letter.

  • I like that Depp is not your typical hollywood jock. He's eccentric, smart and non-conforming, not to mention how he disappears into his characters. Fuckin refreshing if you ask me.

  • Well said.

  • @SharksKid apart from the actrocious sequels of "Carribean" he continues to star in, yes, he is unique & an inspiration

  • @SharksKid as a person he might be very original, but you cant tell unless you know him personaly. but as an actor, yes hes very good. i found myself liking Dicaprio's play in films lately. just as Depp i disrespected him after his cheesy role in Titanik, but he didnt sell out and started doing good movies. They're both my favourite actors of this generation.

  • @ghosthunter2006 Jack Dawson was not a cheesy character...it was one of Dicaprio's best works in a lot of people's opinion. Of course you and everyone has the right to their own opinion.

  • it would be easy to know when this was filmed if johnny aged!!!!!! lol he looks about 25

  • he's FOURTY five and still looks twenty five, even now.

  • Do we need further proof that Hunter S. Thompson was an absolute fucking genius/artist??

  • his voice is beautifull,I could listen to him reading all day. This is his neverland haircut... :)

  • polo is my life.

some one please tell me a website where i can purchase it ?

    xx

  • when was this recorded??

  • Sometime this year I think, he's got the Public Enemies haircut.

  • No no, this was filmed years ago... not sure how many. But it's in the special features on the Criterion Collection edition of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, which I got about three years ago.

  • It was from 2003.

  • the video says '96

  • '96 is when Hunter and Johnny were originally sending the letters to each other. This reading is years after that.

  • then yur deaf m8.

  • nah man he's right, I have to turn my speakers almost all the way up to even hear it.

  • laura?

  • eh?

  • @smalltownapathy

    Check Out:

ww w. ana r ch adia. c om

  • i could listen to him for fucking AGGGGES reading¬!!!!

  • Is the Kate he talks of in the letter Kate Moss?

  • yes

  • Holy fuck, I'm only 1:30 in but this is so hilarious! I love Thompson.

  • Love it or leave it....I say.

  • Is Johnny Depp republican?

  • i HIGHLY doubt it. he doesnt even live in the u.s. anymore cause he's not a big fan of america and american politics

  • no i dont think he is, he said he was incomfortable playing the 'young republican' on 21 Jump Street. He also said the only thing he and Tom Hanson had in common was that they looked alike, and Hanson was a republican

  • hahahaha!! what the fuck, do you know ANYTHING, of course he's not a republican!

  • hahaha so what if hes insane give him the keys to the city

  • Yea what is it with the golf shoes??? In fear and loathing he also neeeds fuckin golf shoes... Wtf for??? :O

  • in the book he talks about how the floor starts to look really weird and in his drug induced thought process he thinks he needs golf shoes to walk

  • he needed them in fear and loathing cause there was no footing in that muck. lol

  • Deep...Depp. Get it?

  • i got it

    i lolled

  • NEED SUM FUKIN GOLF SHOES

  • Well that sounds like a fucking plan to me!

  • fucking fantastic

  • can you imagine getting a letter like that? that's awesome

  • No shit, I would laugh my ass off. Thompson was a genius.

  • Wow. That was truly awesome.

  • this is great! Warren zevon, Depp. and Gonzo!

  • i love his little smile nod at the end.. and best writter known to man

  • I think I could listen to him read anything.

  • i just love his voice!!!

  • love the way he reads it at 3:00

  • wow....

  • The Rum diary is being directed and filmed as we speak, by Bruce Robinson, he of Withnail and I fame.

  • did someone say they're making a rum diary movie? please tell me more

  • I heard they are planing it on 2009

  • they have been saying that for a while. 'the curse of lono' is another one they are planning, sean penn bought the rights to that screenplay.

  • Hunter S. Thompson was one of the supreme letter-writers in American history! Two volumes of his old letters and responses are available for purchase with the third and final one coming out probably next year. HST was smart enough to keep everything he ever wrote with the idea that some day it might be published.

  • so true.

  • hahaha. he acts even when he reads.

  • I can't wait until The Rum Diary movie is released. Depp really is the only one that could ever pull that roll off so well.

  • he almost falls into the character he would then go on to play. he starts reading as johnny, himself, but then his delivery changes. brilliant.
